To a certain extent, automated fruit sorting systems reflect the degree of automated production in modern food industry, and boast a certain theoretical and application value. The previous studies mostly concentrate on the design of robot structure, and the control of robot motions. There is little report on the feature extraction of fruits in specific applications of fruit sorting. For this reason, this paper explores the target positioning and sorting strategy of fruit sorting robot based on image processing. Firstly, the authors constructed a visual sorting system for fruit sorting robot, and explained the way to recognize objects in three-dimensional (3D) scene and to reconstruct the spatial model based on sorting robot. Next, the maturity of the identified fruits was considered the prerequisite of dynamic sorting of fruit sorting robot. Finally, the program flow of the fruit sorting robot was given. The effectiveness of our strategy was verified through experiments.

Introduction: Ethiopia is a rapidly developing country in Eastern Africa. In total, 43.2% of the population are younger than 15. In contrast, until a few years ago, pediatric surgery was only available in Addis Ababa. Now, Ethiopia is making great efforts to improve the care of children who require surgery. JimmaChild was established to set up a pediatric surgery in Jimma. Material and methods: JimmaChild developed from a scientific collaboration between Jimma University (JU) and Ludwig-Maximilians-University. The project was developed and realized by Ethiopian and German colleagues. A curriculum was written for this purpose. The pediatric surgical training of the fellows was carried out on-site by German pediatric surgeons. Results: A new pediatric surgery was established at JU with its own operating room, ward, and staff. After two and a half years, two fellows completed their final examinations as pediatric surgeons. Among others, 850 elective surgeries were performed, 82% assisted by the German colleagues. The German colleagues rated the preparation for the trip, the on-site support, and the professional progress of the fellows mostly as good to very good. Reported problems in the program flow were also recognized and solved in part. Conclusions: The best possible integration of the project into existing structures was achieved by close cooperation of Ethiopian and German colleagues during the project development. Problems were identified and addressed early on by external monitoring. As the project responsibility was mainly with the Ethiopian colleagues, a department was created that now exists independently of external funding and trains its own fellows.

Most of the new supercomputers now use acceleration technology such as GPUs. They promise much higher performance than traditional CPU-only servers, both in terms of floating point operation throughput and memory bandwidth. Furthermore, the electric consumption is significantly reduced, resulting in lower carbon emissions.
However, such high computation speeds can only be achieved if a set of more or less stringent rules are followed with respect to memory access and program flow. As a consequence some algorithms more easily approach peak performance.

Here, we present the results of an effort to achieve high performance on recent nvidia GPU accelerators for the spherical harmonic transform. The spherical harmonic transform can be split into a Legendre transform (which is compute bound) and a Fourier transform (which is memory bound).
By taking advantage of recent algorithmic improvements as well as by tuning the Fourier transform, the can now compute a full forward or backward spherical harmonic transform up to degree 8191 on a single 16GB Volta GPU in less than 0.35 seconds.
For lower resolution (up to degree 1023), a single Volta GPU performs a full transform more than 3 times faster than a 48-cores dual socket Skylake Xeon Platinum server.

We also present results of an ongoing effort to port the (simulation of planetary core fluid and magnetic field dynamics) to GPU-accelerated computers.

In this analysis, we present results from measurements performed to determine the stability of a hand tracking system and the accuracy of the detected palm and finger’s position. Measurements were performed for the evaluation of the sensor for an application in an industrial robot-assisted assembly scenario. Human–robot interaction is a relevant topic in collaborative robotics. Intuitive and straightforward control tools for robot navigation and program flow control are essential for effective utilisation in production scenarios without unnecessary slowdowns caused by the operator. For the hand tracking and gesture-based control, it is necessary to know the sensor’s accuracy. For gesture recognition with a moving target, the sensor must provide stable tracking results. This paper evaluates the sensor’s real-world performance by measuring the localisation deviations of the hand being tracked as it moves in the workspace.
