Using complementary experiments and direct numerical simulations, we study turbulent thermal convection of a liquid metal (Prandtl number $\textit {Pr}\approx 0.03$ ) in a box-shaped container, where two opposite square sidewalls are heated/cooled. The global response characteristics like the Nusselt number ${\textit {Nu}}$ and the Reynolds number $\textit {Re}$ collapse if the side height $L$ is used as the length scale rather than the distance $H$ between heated and cooled vertical plates. These results are obtained for various Rayleigh numbers $5\times 10^3\leq {\textit {Ra}}_H\leq 10^8$ (based on $H$ ) and the aspect ratios $L/H=1, 2, 3$ and $5$ . Furthermore, we present a novel method to extract the wind-based Reynolds number, which works particularly well with the experimental Doppler-velocimetry measurements along vertical lines, regardless of their horizontal positions. The extraction method is based on the two-dimensional autocorrelation of the time–space data of the vertical velocity.

Abstract To measure refractive index at a particular altitude in a solution with vertical refractive index gradient, a transparent wedge-shaped container was constructed altogether with the development of mathematical formula derived from the Snell’s law. The refractive index of the solution can be calculated by measuring the angles of incoming and outgoing laser beams relative to respective normal line. By varying height of the laser beam, the refractive index as a function of height of a sugar solution was obtained. This technique is applied to investigate Fata Morgana which is a kind of superior mirage resulting from bending of light in a medium with density gradient.

In the light of the current climate crisis, one of the most serious ecological threats is the increase of desertification. In this context, restoration projects are necessary for reverting land degradation, and nature-based solutions could help them. The Cocoon™ has been designed as a new ecotechnology for improving seedling establishment. The Cocoon consists of a donut-shaped container made out of recycled cardboard that provides water and shelter to the seedling, at least during its first year, which is the most critical for plant establishment. The Cocoon was tested on a variety of soils, Mediterranean mesoclimates, vegetation and land uses that allowed testing the effectiveness of this ecotechnology under different conditions. Six planting trials, five of them in Spain (Canary Islands, Almería, Catalonia and two in Valencia), and one in Ptolemais (Greece), were performed. With the objective of studying its functionality, the survival of the seedlings, their vigor and growth were monitored along two years. In general, the Cocoon has proven its effectiveness by increasing seedling survival compared to the conventional planting system, especially under dry growing conditions (low rainfall, soils with low water holding capacity). The Cocoon also allowed for higher growth of some species (olive trees, olm oaks and Aleppo pines). Moreover, a positive correlation between the rainfall on the site and the degradation degree of the Cocoon device was observed. Overall, the Cocoon becomes more efficient the more arid the climate or the more difficult the growing conditions are.

The earliest forms of the more recently coined term “Affiliate Marketing” came into being with the advent of Tupperware and Amway. Tupperware, a home products line that includes preparation, storage, containment, and serving products for kitchen as also household plastic containers used to store goods and / or foods, was launched by Earl Silas Tupper of Orlando, Florida, in 1948. He developed his first bell shaped container in 1942, and branded it later. Amway, short for The American Way, is a company that uses a multi-level marketing model to sell a variety of products primarily in the health, beauty and home care markets. It was founded by Jay Van Andel and Richard Devos of Ada Township, Michigan, in 1959. The core concept of both Tupperware and Amway is “revenue sharing” – paying commission for referred business, which is also the idea of Affiliate Marketing.

Vehicle Routing Problem is an issue in item delivery from depot to its customers using several vehicles which have limited capacity with a purpose to minimize transportation cost. The packing constraints exist because the vehicles which are usually used in item delivery have rectangular-box shaped container. Also, the items are commonly in shape of rectangular-box. Therefore, packing or loading method is needed so that containers could load all of the items without causing damage and could ease unloading process. The purpose of this final project is to develop a model and algorithm using metaheuristics method, especially genetics algorithm in order to minimize total delivery distance. A hybrid genetics algorithm and bottom-left fill algorithm also take place to solve the packing process. This algorithm delivered average solution 0.08% worse than ant colony optimization, but had 2.93% better solution than tabu search.

A topology optimization method of thin-shell frame with surface loads is proposed in this paper and the mathematic model of this topology optimization method is introduced. Based on this proposed method, the procedure of lightweight design for special-shaped container is introduced, then, the lightweight design of 30t special-shaped container of heavy-duty dump truck is carried out. The result shows that the proposed method is very practicable and effective.

This paper studies the influence of system parameters to the vibration control effects of a nonlinear damper system under multi-axis excitations. The nonlinear damper system is composed of a particle damper and a primary structure. Based on numerical simulations, it is shown that: increasing the mass ratio can improve the dampers effectiveness, but only up to a certain level; applying particles with a high value of the coefficient of restitution can result in a broader range of acceptable response levels; a lightly-damped primary system can achieve a considerable reduction in its response with a small weight penalty; and that a cylindrically-shaped container provides a higher level of effectiveness than a rectangularly-shaped one.
