This study proposes a method for resource management and optimisation in the industrial sector of China. Differing from previous research on the green assessment of industrial systems focusing on “black box” evaluation, our approach contributes to the two-stage structure of an industrial system that consists of an industrial production process and a pollution treatment process. The corresponding network slack-based model (SBM) is proposed to analyse the performance of China’s provincial industry sector. Based on our network SBM, the global Malmquist index is built to analyse the total factor productivity changes of system and individual processes to evaluate the consistency of sustainable development where dynamic green growth assessment is realized. The results show that the whole system and its pollution treatment process performance are poor and disorganised, while the industrial production process maintains a stable ranking for the 30 regions in China. We find that the main cause of this phenomenon is the variable technical efficiency change in the 30 regions, which reflects the immaturity of the management of the pollution treatment process. System performance is also highly related to regionalism.

Stunting is a common phenomenon in Malaysian children. Optimising outcomes for children with growth disorders rests on early recognition and prompt referral. In this context, a framework for the clinical approach can help to guide appropriate growth assessment and referral. This review article aims to provide family medicine specialists with such a framework whilst raising awareness about the shortcomings of the existing growth monitoring system in Malaysia. It also invites readers to consider additional measures that could further optimise this system.

Tree-ring width chronologies of cedro (Cedrela fissilis Vell.) (1875 to 2018), jatobá (Hymenaea courbaril L.) (1840 to 2018) and roxinho Peltogyne paniculata Benth.) (1910 to 2018) were developed by dendrochronological techniques in the southern Amazon Basin. Acceptable statistics for the tree-ring chronologies were obtained, and annual calendar dates were assigned. Due to the lack of long-term chronologies for use in paleoclimate reconstructions in degraded forest areas, dendrochronological dating was validated by 14C analysis. Tree-rings selected for analysis corresponded to 1957, 1958, 1962, 1963, 1965, 1971, and 1972. Those are critical calendar years in which atmospheric 14C changes were the highest, and therefore their tree-ring cellulose extracts 14C signatures when in alignment with existing post-AD 1950 atmospheric 14C atmospheric curves would indicate annual periodicity. Throughout our correlated calendar years and post-AD 1950 14C signatures, we indicate that H. courbaril shows an erratic sequence of wood ages. The other two tree species, C. fissilis and P. paniculata, are annual in nature and can be used successfully as paleoclimate proxies. Moreover, due to the sampling site’s strategic location in relation to the Tropical Low-Pressure Belt over South America, these trees can be used to enhance the limited amount of observational data in Southern Hemisphere atmospheric 14C calibration curves.

Although the survival rate of preterm infants has improved over the years, growth failure and associated impaired neurodevelopmental outcome remains a significant morbidity. Optimal nutrition plays an important role in achieving adequate postnatal growth. Accurate growth monitoring of preterm infants is critical in guiding nutritional protocols. Currently, there is no consensus regarding which growth assessment tool is suitable for monitoring postnatal growth of preterm infants to foster optimal neurodevelopmental outcomes while avoiding future consequences of aggressive nutritional approaches including increased risk for cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. A retrospective single center cohort study was conducted to compare the performance of two growth-assessment tools, Fenton and Intergrowth-21st (IG-21st) in the classification of size at birth, identification of impaired growth and predicting neurodevelopment. A total of 340 infants with mean gestational age of 30 weeks were included. Proportion of agreement between the two tools for identification of small for gestational age (SGA) was high 0.94 (0.87, 0.1) however, agreement for classification of postnatal growth failure at discharge was moderate 0.6 (0.52, 0.69). Growth failure at discharge was less prevalent using IG-21st. There was significant association between weight-based growth failure and poor neurodevelopmental outcomes at 12 and 24 months of age.
