The paper highlights the role of food, as an instrument of identity and intercultural contact, the contribution of traditional ethnic dishes in the reconstruction of the family context, connected to the migration process, and food as a form of communication in a different social context. It reflects the consequences of the exchange process, in which changes take place both in the cultural traditions of Moldovan immigrants and in Italian customs, due to the fusion of elements and ingredients borrowed through reciprocity, thus diluting the mental and social boundaries.

International cooperation and globalization, the development of high-speed Internet and social media have opened new possibilities for intercultural communication. In this article, the author intends to discuss intercultural contact between Koreans and Nenets through visual anthropological methods. This article is based on the author’s experience, who participated in ethnological research and documentary imaging in the Nenets, Yamal Nenets Autonomous Districts, and the Komi Republic from 2009 to 2019. There are various forms of social ties between Korean filmmakers and reindeer herders. The form and content of intercultural communication in places with no Internet connection are to be considered through the concept of a "cultural mailmen" – scientists, filmmakers, or mass media. We observe the reaction of Korean viewers in the SBS channel's film "The Last Tundra" (2010). The themes of Korean films about the Nenets are focused on their life, education systems, and cuisine of reindeer nomadic. The Korean mass media are one of the most powerful channels developing the interrelationship between the Nenets and the Koreans. It plays an important role in expanding ethnic and cultural contacts between them and popularizing ethnological and anthropological knowledge, especially for the younger generation interested in the new media.

Acculturation theorists have proposed that minority and majority members’ endorsement of the cultural integration orientation should positively impact their mutual intergroup relations. To examine this claim, the study develops and experimentally tests a vicarious intercultural contact strategy designed to promote integration endorsement among a sample of 379 British youths (aged between 18 and 21 years), of whom 172 were British Muslims and 207 were White British. In line with theoretical expectations, results revealed that integration attained through vicarious contact, relative to a control condition, reduced respondents’ negative emotions, increased their positive emotions and inclusion of the other in the self (IOS), and improved their outgroup attitudes. These effects were only present in the Muslim group. Integration effects on outgroup attitude outcomes were mediated by intergroup emotions and IOS. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications of these findings.

This research investigates how the acculturation motivation (AM) of new international students develops over time, and which factors play a role in this development. In the context of a Dutch university, we interviewed 25 students from 17 countries thrice over eight months. The results show that initial AM levels can be categorized as high or low.  These AM levels evolved into four patterns in the three interview rounds: high-low-low, high-low-high, low-high-low and low-high-high. After four months, twelve factors emerged as affecting the development of students’ AM levels. Prominent factors were prior international experience, language difficulties, and perceived student identities. After eight months, seven additional factors contributed to subsequent changes in students’ AM levels. Prominent factors were the perceived international learning environment, friendship networks, and teachers’ role in intercultural contact. These imply that universities can introduce target interventions which could improve their international students’ acculturation experiences at specific times.

In the article we use the round-the-world travel essays "Around-the-world trip on the frigate "Boudez" and the transport" Etoile" by Louis Antoine de Bougainville and "Travel all over the world to "Bussoli" and "Astrolabe" by Jean- Francois de La Perouse to show the image of the "noble savage". These travelogues show that the intercultural contact led to the emergence of patterns of perception of "Others" by Europeans. It is noted that travelogues contributed to self-examination and determined the place and the role of Europeans in the world. Moreover, this pattern includes positive and negative elements as well. The empire could have a benefit from a romanticized image of the "noble savage" thereby stimulating new colonial conquests. At the same time, travel essays could contradict the Enlightenment ideas, when Europeans found barbarians to be aggressive, deceitful and dimwitted. The purpose of this study is to consider the problematic aspects of describing "Others" and to define the role of travelogues in imperial politics. We will argue that the intercultural dialogue shown in French round-the-world travel essays of the second half of the 18th century can hardly be called successful. These travelogues led to the appearance of fascinating pattern of "other". That pattern looked at the “others” through the European knowledge based on system of values typical for the European world.

Acculturation is an inherently causal phenomenon that deals with changes and processes initiated by intercultural contact. However, although more than 13,000 scientific articles have been published on a topic related to acculturation to date, only a small fraction uses longitudinal or experimental methods that actually allow for a test of causation. As a result, our field can be seen as facing a “crisis of causality,” where central theories that assume causality between constructs still lack robust empirical support. To address this gap, I suggest some recommendation for the next generation of acculturation research.

Empirical attention on online intercultural contact and prejudice reduction are increasing. Nevertheless, still little is known on processes that could influence the contact–prejudice relation as well as the relation between online contact and anti-racist behavior. Based on literature on intergroup contact, the present study aims to fill these gaps, focusing on online intergroup relationships between people from different countries. Specifically, it examines whether and to what extent empathic feelings and online community commitment mediate the relationship between online intergroup contact and both perceived ethnic discrimination and anti-racist behavior on Facebook. We collected data from a predominantly Italian sample of 1018 Facebook users (Mage = 30.03, SDage = 11.09; females: 80.01%); participants filled in an online questionnaire. A semi-full Structural Equation Modeling was used to test hypotheses. The results confirmed that when intergroup contact was established, such contact was able to increase the sense of being committed to the online community, which increased the perception of online discrimination towards ethnic and racial minorities, which in turn was able to increase the anti-racist behavior. The ambivalent role of the empathy in online contexts will be discussed.

Healthcare institutions are among the contexts which are heavily characterised by interlingual and intercultural contact. In these contexts communicative ‘short circuits’ can occur due to incomprehension resulting from linguistic and cultural difficulties. Such situations can compromise founding principles of medicine, amongst which equal opportunities for patients’ treatment, scrupulous attention and providing accurate information. The study investigates the perception of the effectiveness of mutual doctor-immigrant patient communication, the linguistic-cultural ‘imagery’ that results from it and the nature and/or absence of specific communication strategies.
