AbstractWalking assistance can be realized by active and passive robotic walkers when their users walk on even roads. However, fast signal processing and real-time control are necessary for active robotic walkers when the users walk on slopes, while assistive forces cannot be provided by passive robotic walkers when the users walk uphill. A robotic walker with an active-passive hybrid actuator (APHA) was developed in this study. The APHA, which consists of a rotary magnetorheological (MR) brake and a DC motor, can provide mobility assistance to users walking both uphill and downhill via the cooperative operation of the MR brake and DC motor. The rotary MR brake was designed with a T-shaped configuration, and the system was optimized to minimize the brake volume. Prototypes of the APHA and robotic walker were constructed. A control algorithm for the robotic walker was developed based on the characteristics of the APHA and the structure of the robotic walker. The mechanical properties of the APHA were characterized, and experiments were conducted to evaluate the mobility assistance supplied by the robotic walker on different roads. The results show that the APHA can meet the requirements of the robotic walker, and suitable assistive forces can be provided by the robotic walker, which has a simple mechanical structure and control method.

Abstract. In order to meet the application requirements of fast-moving, accurate positioning, and low cost, a new type of pneumatic electric hybrid actuator was developed with a positioning accuracy of 0.01 mm. It was found that the velocity fluctuation would occur in the process of driving switching due to the “stop then restart” strategy, resulting in stumbling when positioning. To solve this problem, the basic characteristics of the drive switching mechanism were tested and analyzed. A driving switching strategy called “relay and run” was proposed based on the response characteristics of the locking mechanism in the braking stage and the starting characteristics of the motor. The uniform acceleration was controlled by the motor drive to compensate for the velocity loss so that the overall velocity was slowly reduced. The control model was established, and the experiments were conducted. The results showed that the relay and run switching strategy can eliminate the velocity fluctuation caused by the stop then restart strategy.

In this paper, a novel photovoltaic-electrostatic hybrid actuator with a slant lower electrode based on the PLZT ceramic is proposed. The mathematical model of photovoltaic-electrostatic hybrid actuator is established. Then, based on the mathematical model of photovoltaic-electrostatic hybrid actuator and the parameters identified, the mathematical simulation of the closed-loop displacement control for the photovoltaic-electrostatic hybrid actuator based on the PLZT ceramic is carried out. The results show that the displacement of the actuator can be controlled successfully at a particular value within the pull-in displacement by the light source. Furthermore, the response speed of the output displacement for photovoltaic-electrostatic hybrid actuator with a slant lower electrode is faster than that with a parallel lower electrode, offering a good potential to advance the current applications on micro-electro-mechanical system.

Purpose This paper aims to address the spacecraft attitude control problem using hybrid actuators in the presence of actuator saturation, uncertainties and faults, inertia uncertainties and external disturbances. Design/methodology/approach A hybrid actuator configuration is used where thrusters are engaged for rapid attitude maneuvers, while reaction wheels (RWs) are used for fine pointing. Findings The key advantages are two-fold: a finite-time high-level controller is designed to produce the three-axis virtual control torques; an online robust control allocation (RobCA) scheme is proposed to redistribute virtual control signals to the actuators with taking into account the actuator saturation, uncertainties and faults; and the RobCA scheme allows a smooth switch between thrusters and RWs, which handles the inaccuracy problem of thrusters and saturation problem of RWs. Practical implications An online RobCA algorithm is designed that maps the total control demands onto individual actuator settings and allows a smooth switch between thrusters and RWs. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. Originality/value This work may be used on modern space missions, which impose higher requirements on smooth switching of spacecraft thrusters and RWs.

Following the natural muscle antagonist actuation principle, different adaptations for “artificial muscles” are introduced in this work. Polypyrrole (PPy) films of different polymerization techniques (potentiostatic and galvanostatic) were analyzed and their established responses were combined in several ways, resulting in beneficial actuation modes. A consecutive “one-pot” electrosynthesis of two layers with the different deposition regimes resulted in an all-PPy bending hybrid actuator. While in most cases the mixed-ion activity of conductive polymers has been considered a problem or a drawback, here for the first time, the nearly equal expansions upon oxidation and reduction of carefully selected conditions further allowed to fabricate a “mirrored” trilayer laminate, which behaved as a linear actuator.
