The origins of modern recommender systems date back to the early 1990s when they were mainly applied experimentally to personal email and information filtering. Today, 30 years later, personalized recommendations are ubiquitous and research in this highly successful application area of AI is flourishing more than ever. Much of the research in the last decades was fueled by advances in machine learning technology. However, building a successful recommender sys-tem requires more than a clever general-purpose algorithm. It requires an in-depth understanding of the specifics of the application environment and the expected effects of the system on its users. Ultimately, making recommendations is a human-computer interaction problem, where a computerized system supports users in information search or decision-making contexts. This special issue contains a selection of papers reflecting this multi-faceted nature of the problem and puts open research challenges in recommender systems to the fore-front. It features articles on the latest learning technology, reflects on the human-computer interaction aspects, reports on the use of recommender systems in practice, and it finally critically discusses our research methodology.

Purpose This study aims to analyse the effect of brand interactions such as personal interaction, problem-solving, reliability and store physical appearance on channel loyalty and purchase intention in optical physical stores. Design/methodology/approach The hypotheses are tested through quantitative research based on a questionnaire with a sample of 414 respondents. Researchers conduct multiple regressions to analyse the data. Findings The findings reveal that channel loyalty and purchase intention are positively influenced differently. Person-to-person interactions play a vital role in both constructs (dependent variables). This study also offers relevant managerial implications and future research avenues. Originality/value Despite the relevance of purchase intention in the literature, almost no studies have been published about the intention to buy glasses in the optical physical stores, a relevant contribution this paper offers to the literature. The finding that the store’s physical aspect did not prove to be influential for channel loyalty is also an innovative and relevant contribution of this research.

In this manuscript, we deal with the regularity of a weak solution to the fluid-composite structure interaction problem introduced in [12]. The problem describes a linear fluid-structure interaction between an incompressible, viscous fluid flow, and an elastic structure composed of a cylindrical shell supported by a mesh-like elastic structure. The fluid and the mesh-supported structure are coupled via the kinematic and dynamic boundary coupling conditions describing continuity of velocity and balance of contact forces at the fluid-structure interface. In [12], it is shown that there exists a weak solution to the described problem. By using the standard techniques from the analysis of partial differential equations we prove that such a weak solution possesses an additional regularity in both time and space variables for initial and boundary data satisfying the appropriate regularity and compatibility conditions imposed on the interface.

AbstractTarget signatures are discrete quantities computed from measured scattering data that could potentially be used to classify scatterers or give information about possible defects in the scatterer compared to an ideal object. Here, we study a class of modified interior transmission eigenvalues that are intended to provide target signatures for an inverse fluid–solid interaction problem. The modification is based on an auxiliary problem parametrized by an artificial diffusivity constant. This constant may be chosen strictly positive, or strictly negative. For both choices, we characterize the modified interior transmission eigenvalues by means of a suitable operator so that we can determine their location in the complex plane. Moreover, for the negative sign choice, we also show the existence and discreteness of these eigenvalues. Finally, no matter the choice of the sign, we analyze the approximation of the eigenvalues from far field measurements of the scattered fluid pressure and provide numerical results which show that, even with noisy data, some of the eigenvalues can be determined from far field data.

Abstract The construction and loading of deep foundations (piles) of high-rise buildings causes a considerable effect in terms of stresses and deformation and requires assessing their impact on the response of adjacent tunnels to deformations, particularly for pile foundations, which are often constructed in locations very close to existing tunnels. The execution process for piles structures generates displacements, stresses, and forces, which are transferred through the piles’ soil surrounding a nearby existing tunnel. The research presented in this paper has led to a significantly improved understanding of pile-tunnel interaction problem. It is crucial for the analysis of the impact of the pile construction on an existing tunnel. The treated topic appears in a setting of an urban environment, where we construct numerous profound foundations, sometimes in contact or adjacent to a. In this paper, the response of the existing tunnel under constructed pile process is studied. Numerical modeling was carried out using Plaxis3D software in which the Mohr-Coulomb Model (MC) has been used for modeling, while the piles/ tunnels are modeled as a linear elastic material. Furthermore, a parametric study is conducted, and its cases are investigated. The displacements and the stresses generated on the tunnel lining decreases with the increase in relative distance between pile and tunnel (spacing), the location/length of the pile from the tunnel, the pile diameter, the number of piles. We have also identified two geometrical parameters of the tunnel: shape section and thickness lining which play a prominent role in the interaction between an existing tunnel and a new pile to excavate.

Human-object interaction is of great relevance for robots to operate in human environments. However, state-of-the-art robotic hands are far from replicating humans skills. It is, therefore, essential to study how humans use their hands to develop similar robotic capabilities. This article presents a deep dive into hand-object interaction and human demonstrations, highlighting the main challenges in this research area and suggesting desirable future developments. To this extent, the article presents a general definition of the hand-object interaction problem together with a concise review for each of the main subproblems involved, namely: sensing, perception, and learning. Furthermore, the article discusses the interplay between these subproblems and describes how their interaction in learning from demonstration contributes to the success of robot manipulation. In this way, the article provides a broad overview of the interdisciplinary approaches necessary for a robotic system to learn new manipulation skills by observing human behavior in the real world.

AbstractWe consider a linearized fluid-structure interaction problem, namely the flow of an incompressible viscous fluid in the half space $${\mathbb {R}}^n_+$$ R + n such that on the lower boundary a function h satisfying an undamped Kirchhoff-type plate equation is coupled to the flow field. Originally, h describes the height of an underlying nonlinear free surface problem. Since the plate equation contains no damping term, this article uses $$L^2$$ L 2 -theory yielding the existence of strong solutions on finite time intervals in the framework of homogeneous Bessel potential spaces. The proof is based on $$L^2$$ L 2 -Fourier analysis and also deals with inhomogeneous boundary data of the velocity field on the “free boundary” $$x_n=0$$ x n = 0 .
