Osteoporosis is a condition characterized by deterioration of bone microarchitecture resulting in loss of total bone mass, decreased tissue resistance and increased susceptibility to fractures. The study in question aimed to analyze and debate the risk factors and the effectiveness of forms of prevention related to osteoporosis, given their implication for the general population and the need to disseminate safe and effective forms of behavioral management that can contribute to the decrease in the condition, mainly in the most susceptible individual. For this, 42 articles indexed in Bireme, PubMed, Scielo and UpToDate platforms were selected for discussion of the topic. Thus, it was concluded that the need for active investigation of risk factors by health professionals, as well as the encouragement of preventive practices, especially in the population with higher incidence of the disease.

Osteoporosis is one of the non-communicable diseases that closely links to lifestyle and nutrition. This is a cross-sectional descriptive epidemiologic study, carried out on 440 Jazan university students (males& females). They are chosen by a stratified multistage cluster sampling technique to assess their knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) about osteoporosis risk factors. The data are collected using a validated semi structured Arabic questionnaires. The findings revealed that almost all survey participants agreed with the definition of osteoporosis, which is the decrease of bone density, with only 8.7% disagreeing. Furthermore, 80.0 percent of survey participants classified osteoporosis as a cause of bone fracture. The findings suggest that the study participants' good attitudes toward risk factor prevention of osteoporosis are linked to the daily consumption of an acceptable amount of milk. Another positive attitude toward osteoporosis prevention stemmed from a reduction in the amount of energy drinks consumed, which has been identified as an osteoporosis risk factor. The study recommends that university students of all grades participate in health education programs about osteoporosis risk factors and preventive treatment.

AbstractAtopic dermatitis (AD) has been increasing worldwide over the past few decades. AD has been reported to be associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and fractures in adult AD patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the bone mineral density (BMD) to evaluate osteoporosis risk in young adults with AD by sex. This was a case–control cohort study using a national dataset from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007–2009. We included young adult AD patients (men aged 19 ≤ and < 50 years, premenopausal women aged 19 ≤ and < 50 years) and 1:5 propensity score weighting controls by age, sex, body mass index (BMI), vitamin D level, and alcohol/smoking status. BMD was measured by double energy X-ray absorptiometry at the lumbar spine, femur neck, and total femur. The prevalence of low BMD, defined by a Z-score ≤  − 2.0, was compared between AD and without AD. We analyzed 311 (weighted n = 817,014) AD patients and 8,972 (weighted n = 20,880,643) controls. BMD at the lumbar spine was significantly lower in the male AD group than in the male control group (mean ± SE, 0.954 ± 0.016 vs. 0.989 ± 0.002, P = 0.03). The prevalence of low BMD (Z-score) did not significantly differ between AD and non-AD subjects in both men (3.8% vs. 2.7%, P = 0.56) and women (6.4% vs. 3.3%, P = 0.40). Among AD patients, early age at diagnosis of AD, longer duration of AD, lower BMI, rural residence (for men), less education, low vitamin D level, late menarche, and more pregnancies (for women) were associated with low BMD. In conclusion, low BMD did not occur more frequently in young adults with AD than in non-AD controls. However, early-onset/longer AD duration and lower BMI were associated with low BMD among young adult patients with AD.

Objective: This study aimed to explore the relationships between the common variants of R-spondin/Wnt signaling genes, gut microbiota composition, and osteoporosis (OP) risk in elderly Chinese Han population.Design: Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to obtain the OP-associated measurements at multiple skeleton sites among all 1,168 participants. Genotyping data was obtained by using the next-generation sequencing in the discovery stage (n = 400, 228 OP patients) and SNPscan technology in the replication stage (n = 768, 356 OP patients). Bioinformatic analysis was performed to provide more evidence for the genotype-OP associations. The 16S ribosomal RNA gene high-throughput sequencing technology was adopted to explore OP-associated gut microbiota variations.Results: The genetic variants of rs10920362 in the LGR6 gene (P-FDR = 1.19 × 10–6) and rs11178860 in the LGR5 gene (P-FDR = 1.51 × 10–4) were found to associate with OP risk significantly. Several microbial taxa were associated with the BMDs and T-scores at multiple skeleton sites. The associations between rs10920362 and BMD-associated microbiota maintained significance after adjusting confounders. The rs10920362 CT/TT genotype associated with a decreased relative abundance of Actinobacteria (β = −1.32, P &lt; 0.001), Bifidobacteriaceae (β = −1.70, P &lt; 0.001), and Bifidobacterium (β = −1.70, P &lt; 0.001) compared to the CC genotype.Conclusion: Our findings suggested that the variants loci of LGR6 may be associate with OP pathogenesis via gut microbiota modifications. The relationship between host genetics and gut microbiome provides new perspectives about OP prevention and treatment.
