Abstract Background: Neonatal mortality remain a persisting public health challenge in Ethiopia. Most of the factors that lead to neonatal deaths could be prevented through postnatal check-ups. However, in Ethiopia, coverage of PNC continues to be low. This study aims to assess the determinant factors of PNC visit and the timing of PNC among newborns in Ethiopia.Methods: Using the Ethiopian Mini Demographic and Health Survey (EMDHS) 2019, a total weighted sample of 2,105 women aged 15-49 giving birth in the 2 years preceding the survey was included in the study. Generalized linear mixed model were separately fitted to identify factors associated with any PNC for newborns delivered at home and health facility. Multinomial logistic regression was used to assess timing of PNC with their associated factors.Results: Overall, only 13% (95% CI; 11.2, 14.0) of the newborns received PNC in Ethiopia. Among newborns delivered at home, attending any PNC were determined by region, maternal educational status and birth order. On the other hand, among newborns delivered in a health facility, region, number of ANC visit and religion were determinants of any PNC. Furthermore, attending first PNC within 48 hours after delivery was determined by region and religion. On the other hand, attending first PNC after 48 hours after delivery was determined by region number of ANC visits, maternal educational status and religion. Conclusion: The finding of current study revealed low coverage of PNC among newborns regardless of place of delivery in Ethiopia. The study makes the following recommendation: increase community health literacy on postnatal care, encourage delivery at health facility, link community home birth with PNC. It will be more valuable if there is sharing of experience from regions which have better PNC coverage.

Abstract Background Ethiopia is one of the sub-Saharan African country with high maternal mortality ratio (MMR). According to Ethiopian demographic health survey (EDHS) 2016 report, MMR is 420 among 100,000 live births. Antenatal care utilization is a key intervention to reduce these deaths through problem detection and treatment, promotion of health seeking behavior, and preparing pregnant women for birth. Therefore, this study aimed to assess prevalence and factors associated with antenatal care service utilization in Ethiopia in 2016. Methods Secondary data analysis was done on EDHS 2016. It was a stratified, two-stage, and cluster sampling design. Analysis has been restricted to antenatal care utilization among women who delivered at least one time in the past five years. Data were weighted to correct sampling bias. Moreover, complex data analysis was done. Bi-variate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were carried out. Adjusted odds ratio with 95% confidence interval was computed and P-value less than 0.05 considered as a statistically significance level for identification of association. Results Prevalence of antenatal care utilization was 62.8% [95%CI: 60.9, 64.6] in this study. Maternal educational status of primary school (AOR = 1.8,95%CI:1.2, 2.6), maternal educational status of secondary school (AOR = 4.4,95%CI: 1.1, 17.3), women who listen radio less than 1 per week (AOR = 1.9,95%CI:1.12,3.34), women who listen radio at least 1 per week (AOR = 2.6,95%CI:1.4,4.8), women in rich wealth quintile (AOR = 1.9,95%CI: 1.1, 3.2) were factors positively associated with antenatal care utilization. However, women who had traditional belief (AOR = 0.1,95%CI:0.02,0.49), and women who had five children and above (AOR = 0.6,95%CI: 0.3, 0.9) were factors associated negatively with antenatal care utilization. Conclusions Prevalence of antenatal care utilization is still low in Ethiopia in 2016. Maternal higher maternal educational status, frequent radio listening, higher wealth quintile, traditional belief, and greater number of children were found to be associated significantly with antenatal care utilization. Consequently, socio-economic status should be enhanced, information should be accessed by women about antenatal care utilization and family planning service through mass media. Furthermore, intensive community education program should be designed for traditional believers to increase uptake of antenatal care by stakeholders.

Abstract Background Undernutrition remains a major public health concern affecting both children and adolescents in Ethiopia. However, little attention has been given to the undernutrition of primary school-aged children, with their exclusion within national surveys. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted to determine pooled estimate and determinant factors of undernutrition among primary school-aged children (6 to 15 years of age) in Ethiopia. Method We systematically retrieved available articles on the prevalence of undernutrition in primary school-aged children in Ethiopia by using a number of computerized databases, including PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and Science Direct between September 1 and November 25, 2019. Two authors independently extracted relevant data using a standardized data extraction form. Heterogeneity among included studies was assessed with the Cochrane Q test statistics and Higgins I2 tests. The pooled estimates and determinant factors of school-aged undernutrition were assessed with random-effects model using Stata/se Version 14. Result We have retrieved 30 eligible articles with pooled sample size of 16,642 primary school- aged children to determine the prevalence of undernutrition in Ethiopia. Hence, the pooled prevalence of stunting, underweight, and wasting were found to be 21.3% (95% CI: 17.0, 25.5), 18.2% (95% CI: 14.4, 22.0) and 17.7% (95% CI, 13.5, 21.8) respectively. Heterogeneity was assessed by doing subgroup analysis for study province/region. Thus, the highest prevalence of stunting was 27.6% (95% CI, 20.7, 34.5) and underweight 22.7% (95% CI, 19.2, 26.3) in Amhara Region while, in the instance of wasting, it was 19.3%(95% CI: 5.1, 33.4) in Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region. Maternal educational status (OR = 1.91, 95% CI: 1.33, 2.73), age of school-aged child (OR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.44, 0.72) and sex of school-aged child (OR = 0.73, 95% CI: 0.62, 0.85) were found to be significantly associated with stunting. Maternal educational status (OR = 0.6, 95% CI: 0.36, 0.9) and age of school-aged child (OR = 2.74, 95% CI: 1.81, 4.14) were associated with thinness/wasting. Parasitic infection (OR = 2.02, 95% CI: 1.10, 3.73) were associated with underweight of school age children. Conclusion The prevalence of stunting and underweight among primary school-aged children are moderately high while acute undernutrition (wasting) is more critical than under-five national average as reported in the 2016 Ethiopian Demography and Health Survey. Therefore, this finding warrants the need to design a school-aged children nutrition survey and expand school feeding programs to improve the nutritional status of primary school-aged children in the country. In addition, emphasis should be given to female school-aged children in the early school years, creating awareness for those mothers who lack formal education, and preventing and treating/deworming parasitic infection. Moreover, researchers must conduct research in province/regions which have not yet studied school aged children’s nutritional status to date.
