The introduction of Physa acuta (Gastropoda: Physidae) on Ilha Grande, Southeast Brazil, from initial stages to an established population

This study presents a four-year follow-up of an introduced population of Physa acuta Draparnaud, 1805, from initial stages to an established population. This introduction occurred on a small impacted stream of Vila do Abraão, the main village of Ilha Grande (Angra dos Reis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The population size increased during the study, and presented a relationship to environmental factors, especially with rainfall. On the initial stages of introduction prevailed the smaller specimens, but on the overall, predominated the intermediate size classes. After less than a year, P. acuta becomes established on this stream and was possibly affecting the other species found on the stream. The information presented here is useful to understand the invasion process of invasive snails, as well as directing conservation efforts.

Favela olímpica e pós-olímpica:dinâmicas demográficas e no mercado imobiliário do Vidigal

Resumo Neste artigo, lançamos um olhar atualizado sobre as novas dinâmicas demográficas e imobiliárias instauradas na favela do Vidigal, Rio de Janeiro, dentro do que chamamos aqui de período olímpico (2007-2016) e pós-olímpico (2016-2018). Apoiados em uma amostra probabilística sistemática de questionários semiestruturados aplicados a 364 domicílios, analisamos os impactos desse período no perfil socioeconômico da população dessa favela e no mercado imobiliário local, avaliando em que medida esses impactos permaneceram ou não após o fim do período de megaeventos. Como resultado, apontamos para a formação de um novo fluxo migratório em direção a essa favela após a sua pacificação, fluxo este que apresenta sinais de retração após o fim do período de megaeventos.

Monitoring the feeding and parental care behavior of a pair of free-living owls (Tyto furcata) in the nest during the reproductive period in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

The American Barn Owl (Tyto furcata) lives in urban, periurban and wild environments and feeds mainly on small rodents, meaning it has great importance in the biological control of pests. The aim of this work was to describe the reproductive, parental and eating habits of a pair of American barn owls naturally living outside a residence in the urban area of the municipality of Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. A wood box was installed on an outside wall of the home, monitored by a video camera. A spreadsheet was created to keep track of the observations recorded. The female laid four eggs, and after an incubation period of 30-32 days all the eggs hatched, but only two chicks survived after cannibalism among the chicks. Initially, the male provided the food to the chicks and the female remained in the nest caring for the brood. After approximately a month, the female also began to leave the nest and return with prey, which was offered to the chicks, with the male also continuing this behavior. The chicks left the nest in September, 2017. The data obtained show the existence of cooperation and division of tasks between male and female owls during the reproductive period.

Mammal Collection of the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense Darcy Ribeiro (UENFMZ):

The Mammal Collection of UENF was created in 2013 to document the biodiversity of northern Rio de Janeiro, and house voucher specimens collected during field research held by professors from the university and collaborating institutions. The collection currently holds 440 physical vouchers, mostly bats, and includes noteworthy records, such as the first Promops nasutus reported for the state of Rio de Janeiro. To these physical vouchers, we recently added a digital bioacoustics collection (343 files of bat distress calls) and a camera-trap multimedia collection (2683 videos or photographs of small to large-sized mammals). In this paper, we provide an overview of these holdings, and highlight and discuss the importance of regional scientific collections, along with the fundamental role of publishing their records in online databases in order to increase their visibility and scientific use. Finally, we discuss the importance of natural history collections to society, emphasizing that improving the awareness of the general public on the role of these collections to scientific development will be crucial for their conservation over the next centuries.

EDUCAÇÃO DECOLONIAL:

O presente artigo parte da sistematização das práticas pedagógicas interdisciplinares (Geografia e História) realizadas ao longo do ano de 2019 no Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica Celso Suckow da Fonseca (CEFET), Unidade Maria da Graça (Rio de Janeiro), para dialogar e debater as questões raciais e o ensino decolonial. Nesse intuito, foram realizadas três saídas de campo: primeiramente para o Museu Nacional de Bela Artes, em seguida ao sítio inscrito pela UNESCO como Patrimônio Mundial, conhecido como Pequena África e por fim a região da Praça XV de Novembro. A atividade trouxe novos olhares a respeito da paisagem da cidade do Rio de Janeiro e levou os discentes a refletirem sobre mudanças e permanências no uso do espaço urbano. DECOLONIAL EDUCATION: the landscape and the black History in the narratives of downtown Rio de Janeiro Abstract This article starts from the systematization of interdisciplinary pedagogical practices (Geography and History) carried out throughout 2019 at the Federal Center for Technological Education Celso Suckow da Fonseca (CEFET), Maria da Graça Unit, to dialogue and debate on racial issues and the decolonial teaching. With this in mind, three field trips were made: first to the National Museum of Fine Arts, then to the UNESCO World Heritage site known as Little Africa and finally to the Praça XV de Novembro region. The activity brought new perspectives on the landscape of the city of Rio de Janeiro and led students to reflect on changes and permanencies in the use of urban space.
