Epilepsy is one of the most challenging neurologic diseases confronted by human society. Approximately 30–40% of the worldwide epilepsy patients are diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy and require pre-surgery evaluation. Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a unique technology that provides optimal spatial-temporal resolution and has become a powerful non-invasive imaging modality that can localize the interictal spikes and guide the implantation of intracranial electrodes. Currently, the most widely used MEG source estimation method for clinical applications is equivalent current dipoles (ECD). However, ECD has difficulties in precisely locating deep sources such as insular lobe. In contrast to ECD, another MEG source estimation method named spatio-temporal unifying tomography (STOUT) with spatial sparsity has particular advantages in locating deep sources. In this case study, we recruited a 5 year-old female patient with insular lobe epilepsy and her seizure recurred in 1 year after receiving the radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RF-TC) therapy. The STOUT method was adopted to locate deep sources for identifying the epileptic foci in epilepsy evaluation. MEG STOUT method strongly supported a stereo-electroencephalographic (SEEG)-guided RF-TC operation, and the patient reported a satisfactory therapeutic effect. This case raises the possibility that STOUT method can be used particularly for the localization of deep sources, and successfully conducted RF-TC under the guidance of MEG STOUT results.

AbstractAiming at the problem that traditional direction of arrival (DOA) estimation methods cannot handle multiple sources with high accuracy while increasing the degrees of freedom (DOF), a new method for 2-D DOA estimation based on coprime array MIMO radar (SA-MIMO-CA) is proposed. First of all, in order to ensure the accuracy of multi-source estimation when the number of elements is finite, a new coprime array model based on MIMO (MIMO-CA) is proposed. This method is based on a new MIMO array-based co-prime array model (MIMO-CA), which improves the accuracy of multi-source estimation when the number of array elements is limited, and obtains a larger array aperture with a smaller number of array elements, and improves the estimation accuracy of 2-D DOA. Finally, the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed SM-MIMO-CA method in improving the DOF of array and DOA accuracy are verified by experiments.

Showers are one of the main exposure routes to diverse microbes for end users in built environments. Bacteria in water are responsible for biofilm formation on surfaces, and the inside of a showerhead is a specific niche. Here, for the purpose of microbial characterization, source estimation and possibility of infection, the bacterial compositions of both shower water and showerhead biofilms in the same bathroom were determined and compared using a portable nanopore sequencer. The results suggest that specific bacteria in source water would primarily adhere to the surface of the showerhead where they subsequently form biofilms, and the community compositions within biofilms largely vary depending on environmental factors. The relative abundance of several pathogenic bacterial genera in both water and biofilm samples was low. We suggest that it is important to manage risk of infection in each household, and rapid on-site analysis of microbial communities will allow the realization.
