A general characteristic of the river basin of the interstate Ural river and information on the economic use of the Ural river in its upper, middle and lower reaches are given. Information on the hydrology of the liquid and solid flow of the Ural river is presented. Hydrochemical monitoring of water bodies of the Ural river basin was conducted during the flood period, during the summer low water period and during the autumn low water period of 2017–2018. The hydrochemical monitoring of the water quality in natural reservoirs of the Ural drainage basin made it possible to identify an excess of the MPCs for residential use and for fishery of heavy metal ions in the water of the examined reservoirs. An excess of cadmium ions by (1.2–1.4) MPC for residential use was found in the Ilek river during its low water as well as in the Ural river near the border with the Russian Federation during the flood period in the amount of (3.1–3.4) MPC for residential use and near the village Zharsuat in the period of summer and autumn low water in the amount of (1.5–2.6) MAC for residential use. An excessive concentration of lead ions by (1.2–1.4) of MPC for fresh water fisheries in the middle and lower reaches of the Ural river at different times of the year was found. Excessive concentrations of ions of different heavy metals in comparison with their MPC for fresh water fisheries were found in all water bodies in different periods of the year. The greatest excess of zinc ions in comparison with its MPC for fresh water fisheries was observed during low water.

This work was aimed at creating a simple and reliable submersed biofilter for the decentralized treatment of nitrate-contaminated water. Denitrification of water was performed by the method of displacement (piston) biofiltration in specially designed U-shaped devices intended for residential use. The efficiency of biofiltration in these devices was evaluated under the conditions of their continuous service. The biofilter exhibited an essential increase in the rate of denitrification when transferring to the stationary mode. Hence, the consumer will have the opportunity of supplying big portions of nitrate-contaminated water into the biofilter in one gulp (pulse) and simultaneously getting the same amount of deeply denitrified water. This mode of biofilters exploitation prevents the clogging of the filtration bed and the channeling in it. The design of the created biofilters is rather simple. Materials with a minimum carbon footprint can be used to fabricate these devices.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the parcel-level impacts of the zoning change. Design/methodology/approach Using hedonic regression and propensity score matching econometric techniques, this paper analyses single-family housing prices within Fulton County Georgia. This paper combines data on the parcel-level zoning changes with nearby housing sales transactions to study the potential externality effects because of rezoning induced by private parties. Findings The paper finds evidence of heterogeneous rezoning effects, depending upon the type of rezoning conducted. At a distance within 0.75 miles, housing prices appreciate by 8.31% when nearby privately initiated rezoning maintains the residential character of a neighbourhood. However, housing prices decline by 21.26% when residential housing zones are converted to non-residential housing zones. The negative influences of rezoning residential use to non-residential uses decline as distance increases. Originality/value The analysis provides quantitative information on the impact of rezoning on residential property prices. Planning officials and developers can use these results to assuage homeowner fears of potential negative housing price effects associated with rezoning.

The feasibility of a novel total energy recovery ventilator (HERV) was studied, through the use of an Excel-based screening tool developed for cost analysis, and through TRNSYS simulations for performance analysis. Cost analysis indicated that the HERV almost always outperformed the conventional systems, whereas its attractiveness could be limited by its high capital investment. Simulation results indicated that the counter-flow HERV provided better control of house humidity towards the setpoint, in the meantime, minimized the annual energy use. The performance of heat recovery (HRV) and energy recovery (ERV) ventilators was investigated side-by-side at the Archetype Sustainable Twins-House located in Toronto, Canada. The ERV sensible efficiency ranged from 76.4% to78.5% at an outdoor temperature of -20°C and 5°C respectively, while the HRV efficiency ranged from 91.0% to 95.0% at -16.6°C and 0.7°C respectively. Freezing caused a dramatic drop in the efficiency that was found to be as low as 50%.
