Rising levels of carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the atmosphere has led to metal amide and alkoxide complexes being explored as potential CO₂ activators. A wide variety of M–O and M–N bonds have been shown to activate CO₂, however to date there are no examples with cadmium. A range of novel cadmium amide and alkoxide complexes have been synthesised, using the β-diketiminato ligand (BDI) as an ancilliary ligand. Initial reactivity studies have suggested CO₂ activation may be possible, although no products were isolated. Homonuclear metallic bonding (M–M) has been explored since the 1950’s and complexes containing M–M bonds are known for almost all transition and main group metals. There are only two reported Cd–Cd bonds, both using sterically bulky monoanionic ligands, like the β-diketiminato ligand. A novel β-diketiminato-cadmium chloride complex was synthesised and treated with a range of different reducing agents to generate a Cd–Cd bond. Different reactivities were observed for the reducing agents, however evidence of a Cd–Cd bond was not obtained. Group 14-16 materials, such as lead selenide, are p-type semi-conductors and have the potential to replacing silicon as a photon acceptor in solar cells. Lead selenide nanoparticles display quantum confinement effects, which allows one to tailor the band gap energies to maximise their absorbance of solar energy. The synthesis of PbSe nanoparticles is described in this study from the reaction between selenium and the lead complex [(BDIph)₂Pb], as well as from the decomposition of [(BDIdipp)PbSeP{Se}Cy₂]. Differences in the size and shapes of the nanoparticles was observed, highlighting the need for controlled nucleation and growth conditions.

Abstract Young Dutch Muslim women often lead complex existences: on the one hand, they may be considered “other” to European culture and expected to conform to so-called Western values; on the other hand, they can be subject to scrutiny within their cultural and religious communities. This article explores young Dutch Muslim women’s online practices by focusing on Instagram. By discussing the theories of third spaces (Bhabha, 1994; Pennington, 2018b) and composite habitus (Bourdieu, 1990; Waltorp, 2015), we investigate the following questions: How do young Dutch Muslim women use Instagram? What are the opportunities and constraints that they face when using Instagram? Through qualitative interviews, we discovered that Instagram helps young Dutch Muslim women express their identity in their own terms, but it presents negative aspects connected with privacy and surveillance. We then discuss the need not to generalize Muslim women’s experiences and instead to consider their selective use of Instagram and heterogeneity within Islam.

Live virtual constructive (LVC) flight simulations mix pilots flying actual aircraft, pilots flying in simulators, and computer-generated forces, in joint scenarios. Training resources invested in LVC scenarios must give a high return, and therefore pilots in both live aircraft and simulators need to experience training value for the extensive resources invested in both, an aspect not emphasized in current LVC research. Thus, there is a need for a function, in this article described as LVC Allocator, which assures that complex LVC training scenarios include aspects of training value for all participants, and, thus, purposefully align scenario design with training value. A series of workshops were carried out with 16 fast-jet pilots articulating the training challenges that LVC could contribute to solving, and allocating LVC entities in a training scenario design exercise. The training values for LVC included large scenarios, weapon delivery, flight safety, adversary performance, and weather dependence. These values guided the reasoning of how to allocate different entities to L, V, or C entities. Allocations were focused on adversaries as V, keeping entity types together, weather dependence, low-altitude and supersonic flying requirements, and to let L entities handle and lead complex tasks to keep the human in the loop.

Herein, we report the synthesis and the multiple anti-tumor properties of new gold and silver carbene complexes. The chemical modifications, grounded on our previous studies, led us to identify a good lead complex, gold-based, whose biological features are very exciting and promising in the anti-cancer research and could be further developed. Indeed, the bis-[4,5-dichloro-(N-methyl-N’(2-hydroxy-2-phenyl)ethyl-imidazole-2-ylidene)gold(I)]+[dichloro-gold]− (AuL7) complex possesses the ability to interfere with at least three important and different intracellular targets, namely the human topoisomerases I and II and tubulin, which are able to modulate metabolic processes not directly correlated each other. We proved that the modifications of the ligands structure in AuL7, with respect to another already published complex, i.e., bis-[4,5-dichloro-(N-methyl-N’(cyclopentane-2ol)-imidazole-2-ylidine)gold(I)]+[dichloro-gold]− (AuL4), produce a different behavior toward tubulin-polymerization process, since AuL7 is a tubulin-polymerization inhibitor and AuL4 a stabilizer, with the final same result of hampering the tumor growth. Taken together, our outcomes designate AuL7 as a promising compound for the development of multi-targeted anti-cancer therapies.

For the electrodeposition of corrosion-resistant coatings with zinc alloys with copper, stibium, cobalt, manganese and lead, complex electrolytes based on trilon B have been developed. It is shown that the developed electrolytes are characterized by high scattering power and productivity and allow obtaining fine-crystalline, semi-gloss coatings with an insignificant level of internal stresses.

The flotation separation of scheelite from calcite is problematic, where sodium silicate modified by polyvalent metal ions has shown some advantages for selective depression. In this study, an Al-Na2SiO3 polymer was used as the depressant for the flotation separation of scheelite from calcite using a lead complex of benzohydroxamic acid (Pb-BHA) as the collector. Furthermore, a number of measurements were conducted to investigate the structure of the Al-Na2SiO3 polymer and its adsorption behavior with Pb-BHA complexes on the mineral surface. Flotation experiments indicated that the Al-Na2SiO3 polymer shows good selectivity for the flotation separation of scheelite from calcite at pH 8, where the optimum ratio of sodium silicate to aluminum sulfate was 2:1. Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) and solution chemical analyses revealed that aluminum hydroxide complexes and the hydroxy moiety of silicic acid are able to self-assemble via condensation affording an Al-Na2SiO3 polymer, i.e., a composite aluminosilicate polymer. The zeta potential measurements and adsorption capacity measurements indicated that, upon adsorption of the Al-Na2SiO3 polymer and Pb-BHA complexes on the mineral surface, the Al-Na2SiO3 polymer had less influence on the adsorption of Pb-BHA complexes on the scheelite surface, while the opposite was true for calcite. Therefore, more Pb-BHA complexes and fewer Al-Na2SiO3 polymers were deposited on the scheelite surface, while fewer Pb-BHA complexes and more Al-Na2SiO3 polymers were adsorbed on the calcite surface. The selective separation of scheelite from calcite was attributed to the cooperative selectivity of the Pb-BHA complexes and Al-Na2SiO3 polymer.

Members of the Canadian courts are expected to maintain a rigorous degree of professionalism and good conduct in maintaining an independent, impartial and accountable judiciary. Yet, judges bring their diverse past experiences and values to bench and lead complex lives off the bench. Through examination of the judicial discipline of former Justice Lori Douglas in 2010, this paper makes a two-fold argument. Firstly, although the integrity of conduct by members of the judiciary must be held to the highest standard of public accountability, diverse backgrounds and lived experiences of judges allow for better informed decision-making and thereby, increase public confidence. Secondly, privacy of non-judicial activities ought to be protected to the extent that such activities do not erode public confidence in the judiciary. The diversity of lived experiences and backgrounds of judges is what makes the bench representative and credible in the eyes of Canadians. It is important that policies of the Canadian Judicial Council address these issues in creating workable inquiry and disciplinary procedures that truly further judicial accountability in the eyes of the public in a manner that is efficient yet mitigates harm to individual judges under investigation.
