In the contemporary world, ornamental fisheries /aquaculture is gaining much popularity; in fact, globally it is a trading and marketing industry rather than a hobby. Earlier days, ornamental aquaculture in India was just a hobby for people. Slowly the hobby got momentum to be a viable business as it boomed with trade values internationally. India has enormous potential to be one of the top ornamental fish producing nations as it has huge in untapped or unexploited resources. Ornamental aquaculture can generate income and employment and has immense potential for the upliftment and empowerment of women. Women in fisheries is predominantly involved in post-harvest activities but inclusion of women in aquaculture will help in creating gender equalisation in the sector. Ornamental aquaculture has been tried and tested by several countries, states, and organisations in rural development and the progress of women in all walks of life through ornapreneurship.

The 5G suite of technologies currently rolled out globally represent the potential to establish internet access and connect rural communities to the already connected modern, global community, i.e. closing the digital divide. Further 5G can provide substantial support to UNs 17 Social Development Goals (SDGs). There is also no doubt that there is a substantial risk that the promising potentials are not realized, mainly due to the lack of viable business models leading to that the private sector will not provide all the investments necessary to establish 5G technology in developing countries. This uncertainty makes it relevant – even necessary – to consider the alternative solutions to rural internet access.

Building on critical approaches that understand algorithms in terms of communication, culture and organization, this paper offers the supplementary conceptualization of algorithms as organizational figuration, defined as material and meaningful sociotechnical arrangements that develop in spatiotemporal processes and are shaped by multiple enactments of affordance–agency relations. We develop this conceptualization through a case study of a Danish fintech start-up that uses machine learning to create opportunities for sustainable pensions investments. By way of ethnographic and literary methodology, we provide an in-depth analysis of the dynamic trajectory in and through which the organization gives shape to and takes shape from its key algorithmic tool, mapping the shifting sociotechnical arrangements of the start-up, from its initial search for a viable business model through the development of the algorithm to the public launch of its product. On this basis, we argue that conceptualizing algorithms as organizational figuration enables us to detail not only what algorithms do but also what they are.

The generally accepted aim of doing business is to maximize the business value. The value of a business strongly depends on its ability to generate future cash flow for its owners. A necessary condition is that the business remains financially viable or in other words, the business should meet the assumption of going concern principle. Verifying such an assumption, however, remains an issue. We suggest that this could be indirectly verified as an absence of threat of imminent financial distress. For this purpose, we analysed a set of cash flow and profit based ratios along with a set of other ratios with a potential influence on the business value. In terms of sample, we focus on Czech manufacturing SMEs that were selected, due to their specific features resulting from the financial constraints. The F-test and t-test were employed as a method of identifying the typical signs of risk of financial distress or rather obstacles in accepting the going concern principle. We found that only four of the analysed ratios could serve effectively for this purpose. The best results were achieved when employing ratios describing the operational cash flow or short-term debt, where the gap between viable business and those with limited prospects is the widest.

Learning outcomes The learning outcomes include to identify and discuss important personality characteristics of an entrepreneur, to explore the business planning pitfalls that torment many new ventures and to understand key concepts of business model thinking. Case overview/synopsis The case is about Fetakart, a one-year old venture, which offered custom designed and printed t-shirts in Gujarat, India. The venture was launched by Himanshu Dhadnekar in 2018. Himanshu was a young first-generation entrepreneur who displayed entrepreneurial characteristics since his school days. Later, he was involved with a few failed startups, worked as an employee in different companies and curated new ventures. Fetakart was born out of another venture, MotivPrints, which sold a large variety of custom designed and high-quality printed products such as visiting cards, office essentials, apparels, packaging and marketing material. At MotivPrints, Himanshu discovered the market for customized t-shirts in India but with very little knowledge of the business model or capabilities of leading players such as Bewakoof.com. The venture started struggling and faced several problems including high cost demands by manufacturers and lack of funding. Where did Fetakart go wrong? Was Fetakart born out of impulse? Did Himanshu have a viable business model for Fetakart? Complexity academic level The case can be discussed in the class of entrepreneurship at master’s level. It can also be used in entrepreneurship specialization course and strategic management elective(s) in the second year of post-graduation. The case can be particularly useful for young entrepreneurs associated as incubatees with a business incubator and for an executive development program related to new ventures. Supplementary materials Teaching Notes are available for educators only. Subject code CSS 3: Entrepreneurship.
