Abstract The relativistic electrons rotate in the enhanced magnetic field of the supernova remnants and emit the synchrotron radio emission.We aim to use the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) to obtain a sensitive continuum map of the SNR VRO 42.05.01 (G166.0+4.3) at 1240 MHz. The 500 MHz bandwidth is divided into low and high-frequency bands centered at 1085 and 1383 MHz to investigate the spectral index variations within the remnant, together with the Effelsberg 2695 MHz data. We obtained an integrated flux density of 6.2±0.4 Jy at 1240 MHz for VRO 42.05.01, consistent with previous results. The spectral index found from TT-plot between 1240 and 2695 MHz agrees with previous values from 408 MHz up to 5 GHz. The three-band spectral index distribution shows a clear flatter value of α ∼ −0.33 in the shell region and steeper index of α = −0.36 − −0.54 in the wing region. The flatter spectral index in the shell region could be attributed to a second-order Fermi process in the turbulent medium in the vicinity of the shock and/or a higher compression ratio of shock and a high post-shock density than that in elsewhere.

AbstractThe entopeduncular nucleus (EPN) in rodents is one of the two major output nuclei of the basal ganglia and corresponds to the internal segment of the globus pallidus in primates. Previous studies have shown that the EPN contains three types of neurons that project to different targets, namely, parvalbumin (PV)-, somatostatin (SOM)-, and choline acetyltransferase-positive neurons. However, we have recently reported that neurons lacking immunoreactivities for these substances are present in the EPN. Here, we demonstrate that 27.7% of all EPN neurons showed immunoreactivity for nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Among them, NOS-only positive and NOS/SOM double-positive neurons accounted for 20.1% and 6.8%, respectively, whereas NOS/PV double-positive neurons were rarely observed. NOS-containing neurons were distributed in a shell region surrounding the thalamus-targeting, PV-rich core region of the EPN, especially in the ventromedial part of the shell. The retrograde tracer fluoro-gold (FG) was injected into several target regions of EPN neurons. Among FG-labeled EPN neurons after injection into the lateral habenula (LHb), NOS-only positive, NOS/SOM double-positive, and SOM-only positive neurons accounted for 25.7%, 15.2%, and 59.1%, respectively. We conclude that NOS-positive neurons are the second major population of LHb-targeting EPN neurons, suggesting their possible involvement in behaviors in response to aversive stimuli.

Guidance errors and unrefined neural map configurations appear linked to certain neurodevelopmental conditions, including autism spectrum disorders. Deficits in specific multisensory tasks that require midbrain processing are highly predictive of cognitive and behavioral phenotypes associated with such syndromes. The lateral cortex of the inferior colliculus (LCIC) is a shell region of the mesencephalon that integrates converging information from multiple levels and modalities. Mature LCIC sensory maps are discretely-organized, mimicking its compartmental micro-organization. Intermittent modular domains receive patchy somatosensory connections, while inputs of auditory origin terminate in the encompassing extramodular matrix.Eph-ephrin signaling mechanisms instruct comparable topographic arrangements in a variety of other systems. Whether Eph-ephrin interactions also govern the assembly of LCIC multimodal maps remains unaddressed. Previously, we identified EphA4 and ephrin-B2 as key mediators, with overlapping expression patterns that align with emerging LCIC modules. Here, we implicate another member of this guidance family, ephrin-B3, and quantify its transient expression with respect to neurochemically-defined LCIC compartments. Multiple-labeling studies in GAD67-GFP knock-in mice reveal extramodular ephrin-B3 expression, complementary to that of EphA4 and ephrin-B2. This distinctive pattern sharpens over the early postnatal period (birth to P8), prior to ephrin-B3 downregulation once multimodal LCIC inputs are largely segregated (P12). Channel-specific sampling of LCIC ROIs show ephrin-B3 signal periodicities that are out-of-phase with glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD;modular marker) signal fluctuations, and match calretinin (CR) waveforms (matrix marker). Taken together, the guidance mosaic registry with emerging LCIC compartments and its interfacing afferent streams suggest a prominent role for Eph-ephrins in ordering behaviorally significant multisensory midbrain networks.

In this study, hybrid composite consisting of aluminium (Al) shell and magnesium/glass microballoon (Mg-20 wt.% GMB) syntactic composite core was fabricated in a shell-core pattern by combining powder metallurgy and disintegrated melt deposition (DMD) techniques. Physical, microstructural and mechanical properties of as-cast Al and Al/Mg-20GMB hybrid composite were examined. Approximately 13% reduction in density (with respect to aluminium) was realized through the use of a syntactic composite core. Microstructural investigations revealed reasonable interfacial integrity between aluminium shell and Mg-GMB core material and the presence of Al, Mg and GMB phases. The interface region showed a hardness of 109 ± 2 Hv in comparison to the hardness of Al shell region (68 ± 4 Hv) and Mg-20GMB core region (174 ± 5 Hv). In comparison to as-cast Al, the yield strength and ultimate compressive strength of the as-cast Al/Mg-20GMB hybrid composite increased by ~65.4% and ~60%, respectively. Further, the energy absorption under compressive loading for the Al/Mg-20GMB hybrid composite was ~26% higher compared to pure Al. This study validated that Al/Mg-20GMB hybrid composite with superior absolute and specific mechanical properties can be fabricated and used for weight critical applications.

AbstractThe medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) plays important roles in social behaviors, but it is not clear how early social experiences affect the mPFC and its subcortical circuit. We report that mice singly housed for 8 weeks immediately after weaning (SH mice) show a deficit in social recognition, even after 4 weeks of re-socialization. In SH mice, prefrontal infralimbic (IL) neurons projecting to the shell region of nucleus accumbens (NAcSh) showed decreased excitability compared to normally group housed (GH) mice. Furthermore, NAcSh-projecting IL neurons were activated when the mice encountered a familiar conspecific, which was not shown in SH mice. Chemogenetic inhibition of NAcSh-projecting IL neurons in normal mice selectively impaired social recognition without affecting social interaction, whereas activation of these neurons reversed social recognition deficit in SH mice. Therefore, mPFC IL-NAcSh projection is a novel brain circuit affected by early social experience; its activation is required for the social recognition.
