The book “Applied social sciences: concepts and perspectives vol.01, edited and published by South Florida Publishing, gathers ten chapters that approach themes of relevance in the context of education and are available in Spanish. The book will feature, a study on establishing the development of literary transcendentalism and how it manifests itself between the islands of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico from the years 1927 to the mid-1950s. Literary transcendentalism was a manifestation that contemplated various ideologies and positions among our Caribbean islands. Another study that will be discussed is the explanation of basic personality traits in a case of homicide perpetrated by a subject who exercised professional activity in the elite military field (he was a sniper specialized in special missions abroad), what are the repercussions or consequences juridical-juridical that led to the crime of (civil) homicide perpetrated by him and sentence handed down to that effect. The third chapter presents a search for a model for the assessment of competencies in basic education through a case study at the Los Pinos de Algeciras school. We are in the middle of the infant school. A survey will also be presented in a global company, located in Brazil, on how it is facing knowledge management and its dissemination, through corporate tools and by managers. It also aims to research market tools that can improve this management and make companies move towards a future within the plan, without significant loss of their intellectual capital and embedded knowledge, among other works. Thus, we thank all authors for their commitment and dedication to their work and we hope to be able to contribute to the scientific community, in the dissemination of knowledge and in the advancement of science.

How do people describe the psychological sense of community (PSOC) in the present day ideological climate of globalising neo-liberalism, assuming that people are essentially individualistic, that solidarity, social commitment, and citizenship are not natural dispositions, as we all are the lonely citizen? This issue is addressed by a mixed-methods study using semi-structured interviews with two age groups—young and older people—from two different cultures—India (Mumbai) and Norway (Oslo). This two by two design gives the opportunity to analyse people’s meaning systems of PSOC, asking; is there a core meaning system of PSOC shared by people within as well as across cultures? Belongingness and citizenship are continuously formed and negotiated, just at the intersection of two dimensions: culture and historical time. The young and older adult informants often live in different “historical times.” The meaning systems of PSOC were explored and compared by language analyses of words used by the informants. Text search queries were made for 69 words. “Help,”, “care,” “different,” “problem,” and “family” were identified as central for further in-depth qualitative analyses. The word, “family” demonstrated high frequencies of use across sub-samples. There was nothing more relevant for the groups than the family when thinking of PSOC, revealing almost a “prior to society perspective.” PSOC is about being part of families. Simultaneously, we are members of other communities: schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, cities and nations. The informants mentioned such communities, but not often. Feeling part of the family, helping and caring not only the family but also your neighbourhood, local community, or national and global communities are particularly necessary today, as we live in a time where communities, societies, and nations across the world are heavily impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In this crisis, it is vital that nobody forgets that we are national and transnational citizens and part of many interrelated social systems. This study points out how community psychology and the applied social sciences can work to strengthen the feelings of connections to other communities, societies, and nations outlining and co-creating transformative multi-level interventions of public policy programmes of inclusion and “we-ness.”

The general objective of this article is to establish "state of the art" on the Programa de Apoio à Pesquisa em Empresas (PAPPE) and TECNOVA. These programs are focused on financing innovation in the modality of Economic Subvention (ES), which means the provision of public resources directly to companies for the development of Research and Development (R&D) activities. For this reason, the Capes Dissertation and Thesis Bank was used. The main results showed that the theme is of interest to researchers from north to south of the country, with emphasis on the Southeast, Northeast and South regions. Applied Social Sciences, Engineering III and Multidisciplinary were the areas of Knowledge that most sought to study ES. The importance of this type of financing for the performance of the beneficiary companies, the business maturity for the success of the projects and the relevance of the program to expand the cooperation of companies with the university were observed in the selected studies. The analysis of the studies carried out makes it possible to recommend the continuity and strengthening of the financing policy for innovative activities in the ES modality in the Brazilian states.

In this article, we analyze how academic freedom is socially represented by professors in their teaching activities. To achieve this objective, we run twenty interviews with professors from Applied Social Sciences courses both in public (UNIPUB) and private (CENU) organizations of higher education in Brazil, for which fictitious names were given. Our study is grounded on the Theory of Social Representations and the four dimensions of academic freedom, namely: teaching, learning, researching, and disseminating knowledge. Our findings presented both convergence and divergences regarding the two institutions. Both institutions centered freedom on the professor, but they diverged as to the presence of other individuals in the teaching and learning process and, therefore, in the representation of academic freedom. Also, dimensions such as research and dissemination were quite different between the organizations, while at CENU the research is an activity aimed at class planning, and the dissemination is a distant activity, at UNIPUB there are scientific and critical aspects regarding both. In general, freedom is represented and driven by guidelines that can provoke conflicts at CENU, while in UNIPUB the freedom to act is sometimes used inappropriately.

After the closing of the IX Accounting Symposium (SICONF), Prof. Dr. Rafael Martins Noriller, president of the Scientific Committee of the event, aroused interest in the possibility of publishing some works presented in the form of books. We joined in proposing this idea and, thus, this work arises in order to rescue part of the memorial of the works presented in the theme of Accounting and Finance, organized in the form of chapters. Thus, the book is structured in 9 chapters, presenting themes on payroll and car dealership costs, indebtedness of football players, sustainability reports, causes of failures and successes in micro and small companies, management accounting in the real estate sector and also in 50-year-old companies in the B3 industrial goods sector, mental health of nursing professionals and auditing of human resources management. Thus, considering various differential views and views, both theoretical and practical, this book aims to contribute with scientific knowledge in the field of applied social sciences, especially in accounting, with the aim of leveraging scientific research among the various themes presented. Happy reading to all!

Strong theories are sorely lacking in the applied social sciences, especially in psychology. Elko Fried identifies fundamental problems that are common in social science research and explains how these problems manifest themselves in the literature, impede scientific progress, and contribute to the lack of theory building. He covers a lot of ground: weak theories, the conflation of theoretical and statistical models, problematic inferences, equating latent variables with psychological constructs, and more. As intelligence researchers, we are all too familiar with these kinds of problems; they have been sources of confusion and barriers to progress for over a century. A decade ago, the continued lack of concern over these issues in the field of intelligence became our major concern, and our motivation to develop a new approach. Suffice to say, Elko Fried is music to our ears.

This study aims to analyze the impact of higher education scholarship policies on the internationalization and evaluation of Brazilian postgraduate studies, in the area of Applied Social Sciences, in order to verify if investments by public policies on internationalization of education (e.g., grants) imply an improvement in the concept of quality of Brazilian postgraduate programs. The research method is quantitative, based on panel data regression analysis, correlation between the scholarships abroad granted by the Brazilian public agency Capes, and the evaluation carried out by the institution itself. The period analyzed was from 1998 to 2016, generating a sample of 5,163 observations. Correlation and regression results with panel data show that investment in scholarships abroad has a positive and statistically significant impact on the improvement of postgraduate programs. Furthermore, the results show that investments in scholarships abroad through Capes scholarships are positively correlated with the internationalization of graduate programs in the area of Applied Social Sciences. These results have important implications for policy makers and educational leaders, as they demonstrate the importance of investing in internationalization of higher education to achieve higher levels of excellence.
