Response to intervention (RTI) and multi-tiered system of support (MTSS) are educational initiatives designed to increase the success of all students in general education and reduce the number of students referred for special education services. RTI and MTSS have resulted in improved outcomes for students. Successful implementation of RTI and MTSS relies upon collaboration between teachers and other school personnel. Lack of collaboration and consistency between members of MTSS teams can compromise the fidelity of the interventions, which can lead to poor student outcomes. Secondary RTI and MTSS models are difficult to implement due to several factors, including student diversity, curriculum complexity, and high student-staff ratios. This chapter investigates recent research on the implementation of RTI and MTSS models in secondary schools and focuses on the interdisciplinary efforts required to implement these models with fidelity and with student success.

This chapter urges educators to think differently about identifying and serving young children in gifted education services. Embedded in the chapter are principles for creating equitable services for young children which include focusing on and respecting the strengths and talents that all young children bring to their early learning environments. Creating thinking environments maximizes opportunities to promote and strengthen intellectual engagement as well as social and emotional development. Described through the metaphor of a jazz musician, the author emphasizes the important roles that teachers play in implementing culturally responsive pedagogies that embrace teaching for social justice. The author concludes with a scenario that illustrates the principles for creating equitable services for all young students and reiterates the need to change conceptions of early childhood gifted education from comparative practices to strengths-based and appropriately challenging instruction for all.

Digitalization of payments related to education has played a significant role in driving the fourth agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) aimed at providing free, equitable, and quality primary and secondary education to children by 2030. Since the launch of mobile money transfer (MMT) technologies by Safaricom in Kenya in 2007, many providers have developed a range of services to ensure efficient, transparent, and sustainable means of paying for school and college fees. This has led to enhanced teacher-student interaction times, reduced absenteeism, improved security in handling money, and made it easier for families to save, plan, and educate their children. This chapter reviews key success cases of countries and institutions that have digitalized payments and other education services to empower disadvantaged communities.
