Rabbits have played an important role in ophthalmological research processes, however in the environment there has been a deficiency of sensitive equipment in measurement of intraocular pressure for this species. To compare intraocular pressure (IOP) measured with rebound (TONOVET Plus®) and applanation (TONO-PEN VET®) tonometry in healthy New Zealand rabbits treated with Amlodipine. Twelve healthy male New Zealand white rabbits, 5 months old; two groups with 6 individuals were used in this study. The experimental group was given Amlodipine® at a dose of 5 mg/kg, once a day for a month. Blood pressure and intraocular pressure were measurement before treatment and 6 h after treatment in a period of one month. A trend is noted where the group of animals treated with amlodipine® presents lower values than the control group, both in systolic and diastolic pressure. The systolic pressure of the control group showed an average of 116.5 ± 7.9 mmHg and 117.4 ± 8.9 mmHg and the treatment group showed an average of 113.6 ± 7.9 mmHg and 111.8 ± 10.0 mmHg (pretreatment and posttreatment respectively). Tonometry: the values obtained using the TONOVET Plus® (19 ± 3 mmHg) are on average higher than the values obtained using the TONO-PEN VET® (17 ± 3 mmHg). It was possible to demonstrate the relationship between systemic blood pressure and intraocular pressure in New Zealand white rabbits. Rebound tonometry showed less variability in results than applanation tonometry. This study confirmed that both tonometers are reliable for measuring IOP in rabbits.

Background: Experimental studies have shown a progressive thinning and perforations of the sinus mucosa associated with sharpened edges and the cutting projections of graft particles used simultaneously for maxillary sinus augmentation. Hence, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the damaging effects of two different bovine grafts on the sinus mucosa after sinus augmentation. Methods: Twenty New Zealand rabbits received a bilateral sinus lifting using, as fillers, two different types of deproteinized bovine bone in granules, one processed at low temperature (low-T group), and the other at high temperature (high-T group). Thinned mucosa sites (<40 µm) and perforations were evaluated in the sinus mucosa that were in contact with graft granules after 2 and 10 weeks, in ten animals per period. Results: After 2 weeks of healing, the number of thinned mucosa sites was 118 in the low-T group, and 149 in the high-T group (p = 0.191). At the 10-week assessment, the thinned sites increased to 237 and 195 sites, respectively. The numbers of sinus mucosa perforations after 2 weeks were eight and three in the low-T and high-T group, respectively. At the 10-week evaluation, the perforations increased to 19 in the low-T group, and to 14 in the high-T group. Conclusions: The contact with bovine xenografts yielded thinning and perforations of the sinus mucosa. Despite the differences in characteristics and dimensions, no differences were found between the two xenografts in the numbers of thinning mucosa sites and perforations. However, a trend of more events was found in the low-T compared to the high-T group.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the nephroprotective, hypolipidemic and hypoglycemic effects of Allium porrum (leek) in rabbits with cisplatin nephrotoxicity. Forty adult male New Zealand rabbits were divided randomly into four groups (ten rabbits in each group) as follows: Group I: (negative control) (C) received oral daily dose of distilled water for 15 successive days. Groups II: (Leek) (L) received oral daily dose of aqueous leek extract (500mg/kg/day) for 15 successive days. Group III: (positive control) [cisplatin (CP)] received oral daily dose of distilled water for 15 successive days, and subsequently administered single dose of Cisplatin (3.5mg/kg/day) by intraperitoneal injection from day 10 for five days. Groups IV: (Leek and Cisplatin

AbstractTalas or taro leaf contains active compounds in the form of flavonoids and saponins that can accelerate the process of epidermal tissue re-epitalization and infiltration of inflammatory cells in the wound area. The purpose of this study was to compare the healing activities of the n-hexane fraction, methanol fraction, and taro leaf extract in New Zealand rabbits. The extraction method using maceration, the fractionation method used liquid-liquid partition with a separating funnel and the treatment method on test animals used was the application of the n-hexane fraction, methanol fraction, and taro leaf extract on open wounds of New Zealand rabbits with positive control and negative control. The data obtained is in the form of the value of open wound narrowing on the rabbit’s back. The result of the data were analyzed by ANOVA (Analysis Of Variant) followed by the LSD (Least Significant Different) test to see which treatment gave different effect in each group. The results of the research or testing for 14 days showed that the extract, n-hexane fraction, and methanol fraction had wound healing activity on the rabbit back with statistical data showing significant differences between treatment groups. The extract had the most optimal wound healing activity compared to other treatment groups. Keywords: talas leaf, extract, fraction, wound AbstrakDaun talas mengandung senyawa aktif berupa flavonoid dan saponin yang mampu mempercepat proses reepitalisasi jaringan epidermis dan infiltrasi sel-sel radang pada daerah luka. Abstract Livestock can sustain expected levels of productivity if the disease is controlled successfully. Rabbit coccidiosis is the major disease-causing high mortality and morbidity. Since no vaccine is available, the eradication is primarily based on careful management combined with medication in feed or water. Chemical coccidiostat is not only raising antibiotic resistance. It also adds environmental contamination since antibiotic is secreted onto land and water. In this report, we attenuate Eimeria piriformis and used it as the vaccine candidate for New Zealand rabbits in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. 90% of rabbits immunized with live attenuated E. piriformis showed no severe signs when challenged with wild type containing 5 x 105 oocyst. The use of live-attenuated E. piriformis is promising as coccidiosis prevention and control program. The strategy would reduce the continuous usage of chemoprophylactic substances in rabbit husbandry and therefore contribute in reducing environmental contamination of antibiotics

To reduce the circulation path of the output current of traditional electroacupuncture (TEA) process in the body, a simple single-acupoint electroacupuncture (SEA) frame was designed and the acupuncture effect of SEA was evaluated through Hou-san-li (ST-36) and Qian-san-li (LI-10) acupoints. Forty-two healthy New Zealand rabbits were randomly divided into seven groups and underwent acupuncture for 20 min in an awake state. Blood samples aseptically collected from the ear vein 3 h before acupuncture and 0, 3, 6, 9, 12 and 24 h after acupuncture were used for the detection of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatine kinase MB (CK-MB) and motilin (MTL) in serum. The simple SEA frame was developed successfully, and the acupuncture results showed that the serum AST and ALT levels were significantly higher at 3 h after TEA with high frequency (p < 0.01) compared with the control group. Regarding serum CK-MB levels, no significant differences were found after SEA or TEA stimulation (p > 0.05). Serum MTL levels were significantly increased at 0 h after SEA and TEA (p < 0.05), but there were no significant differences at other time points after SEA and TEA treatment (p > 0.05). SEA not only maintains the effect of TEA but also shortens the circulation loop of the electroacupuncture (EA) current in the body, which effectively avoids body injury.
