Abstract Understanding the mechanisms and controlling the possibilities of surface nanostructuring is of crucial interest for both fundamental science and application perspectives. Here, we report a direct experimental observation of laser-induced periodic surface structures (LIPSS) formed near a predesigned gold step edge following single-pulse femtosecond laser irradiation. Simulation results based on a hybrid atomistic-continuum model fully support the experimental observations. We experimentally detect nanosized surface features with a periodicity of ∼300 nm and heights of a few tens of nanometers. We identify two key components of single-pulse LIPSS formation: excitation of surface plasmon polaritons and material reorganization. Our results lay a solid foundation toward simple and efficient usage of light for innovative material processing technologies.

AbstractOptical skyrmions have recently been constructed by tailoring vectorial near-field distributions through the interference of multiple surface plasmon polaritons, offering promising features for advanced information processing, transport and storage. Here, we provide experimental demonstration of electromagnetic skyrmions based on magnetic localized spoof plasmons (LSP) showing large topological robustness against continuous deformations, without stringent external interference conditions. By directly measuring the spatial profile of all three vectorial magnetic fields, we reveal multiple π-twist target skyrmion configurations mapped to multi-resonant near-equidistant LSP eigenmodes. The real-space skyrmion topology is robust against deformations of the meta-structure, demonstrating flexible skyrmionic textures for arbitrary shapes. The observed magnetic LSP skyrmions pave the way to ultra-compact and robust plasmonic devices, such as flexible sensors, wearable electronics and ultra-compact antennas.

In the infrared region of the spectrum (IR), the optical properties of single-crystal samples of narrow-gap degenerate semiconductors Bi2Se3 and Sb2Te3 are investigated by infrared spectral ellipsometry (SE). The transport properties of the Drude fitting of dielectric functions obtained by spectroscopic ellipsometry are studied. The behavior of the bulk and surface plasmon polaritons is investigated in detail. The dispersion and mean free path of the plasmon, the depth of the skin layer for the conducting and dielectric surfaces are calculated. The contribution of the plasmon to the optical properties is estimated from the spectral density for the Bi2Se3 and Sb2Te3 samples.
