VOHO Hemp Oil (Verdant Nature LLC (in collaboration with HempFusion)) is an extract of the aerial parts of hemp (Cannabis sativa L) manufactured using a supercritical CO2 extraction process. The results of four safety studies are reported here including a bacterial reverse mutation assay, an in vivo mammalian micronucleus study, a maximum tolerated dose study in rats and a 90-day repeat dose subchronic toxicity study in rats. VOHO Hemp oil can contain up to 30% phytocannabinoids and less than 0.2% is tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). VOHO Hemp Oil was found to be non-mutagenic in the bacterial reverse mutation assay and was negative for inducing micronuclei in the rat bone marrow micronucleus assay. The maximum tolerated dose in male and female Wistar rats was 2250 mg/kg bw/day. A 90-day repeat dose study was conducted in male and female Wistar rats according to OECD Guideline 408 and included a 21-day recovery period. The doses used in the study were 0, 25, 90 and 324 mg/kg bw per day in the main study, and in the recovery phase a control and 324 mg/kg bw/day group were included. One mortality was reported during the study, a high dose female, and test substance-related adverse clinical signs were reported in the high dose group. Other test substance-related changes noted in the high dose group included changes in body weights, activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) values, and in absolute and relative organ weights. Based on the results of the study, the no observed adverse effect level (NOAEL) for VOHO Hemp Oil was determined to be 90 mg/kg bw/day in both male and female Wistar rats.

Topicality. Sauces are an integral part of most dishes, which are prepared from a variety of products: meat, fish, seafood, vegetables. They give the dishes juiciness, add variety to the aesthetic appearance of the dish and complement their taste, increase calories, and nutritional value. The most common sauces are culinary sauces of the emulsion type, in particular, mayonnaise and its derivatives. Nowadays, the oil and fat industry produces a whole “line” of mayonnaise products with various additives that improve the taste, structure and increase the shelf life. The oil and fat industry is at a stage when its development can no longer be carried out by traditional methods, new approaches and solutions are needed. Trends in balanced and healthy diet are forcing producers to look for new approaches for the production of classic mayonnaise with high biological value and high quality characteristics. The problem of nutrition optimisation in terms of the content of essential nutrients, such as fatty acids, can be solved by introducing into the recipe some composition, such as an oil- fat base, vegetable oils are rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids ω-3 and ω-6. One of the promising areas of production of emulsion products, such as mayonnaise sauce, is the introduction of standard recipes for full or partial replacement of sunflower oil with hemp oil, in order to improve biological value, while maintaining high organoleptic, structural and mechanical properties and safety. Among the essential nutrients needed to maintain homeostasis of the human body are polyunsaturated fatty acids, the source of which is hemp oil. Hemp oil contains natural antioxidants, which gives a raised resistance to oxidation, despite the natural high content of ω-3 and ω-6 fatty acids. One of the ways to implement the innovative idea is the partial or complete replacement of the oil-fat fraction of the emulsion-type mayonnaise sauce with hemp oil in a mass fraction of introduction into the recipe (50%, 75%, and 100%). The aim of the study is to research the quality of mayonnaise sauce with partial or complete substitution of oil, and fat fraction for hemp oil, namely their organoleptic, physicochemical (effective viscosity, emulsion stability, acidity, acid and peroxide value) indicators, to investigate the fatty acid composition developed samples of mayonnaise sauce, based on hemp oil, and investigate the change in microbiological parameters during storage. This will expand the range of quality foods, enriched with essential nutrients. The following research methods are used in this article: standard methods of organoleptic profile analysis, structural-mechanical, standard methods of research of fatty acid composition, and methods of determining microbiological parameters. The results of this study are processed using modern computer programmes. Results. The expediency of using mayonnaise, based mayonnaise sauce technology, during the development of hemp oil sauce technology, has been theoretically and experimentally substantiated, and formulations of these mayonnaises have been elaborated. Based on the organoleptic analysis, it is determined that the use of hemp oil in the technology of mayonnaise sauce has a positive effect on its organoleptic characteristics. The study of the fatty acid composition shows that the optimal ratio of fatty acids of the groups ω-3: ω-6, as 1:4, has a sample of mayonnaise sauce (M2), containing 75% of hemp oil in its composition. The analysis of the fatty acid composition also confirms the functionality of all developed samples of mayonnaise. It is found that all elaborated samples of mayonnaise, based on hemp oil, fully comply with the normative indicators of structure (effective viscosity and stability of the emulsion), and quality indicators (pH, acid number, and peroxide value). It is investigated that the microbiological parameters of the control sample of mayonnaise and experimental samples with partial or complete replacement of the oil and fat fraction with hemp oil during storage (28 days) indicate that opportunistic and pathogenic microflora are within acceptable values. Conclusions and discussion. The studied quality indicators make it possible to substantiate the technology of mayonnaise sauce based on hemp oil with increased biological value.

Background. A promising direction of ensuring the rational nutrition of the country’s population is the creation of functional goods from natural raw materials, safe for humans, which should be affordable, nutritious and useful. Such natural raw materials with great potential for the production of food products for a wide range of applications are technical hemp, namely their seeds. Analysis of recent research and publications hasproven the biological and physiological value of food products from technical hemp seeds. It identified the need for a systematic analysis of the nutritional value and economic efficiency of technical hemp seed products in comparison with similar products from other crops. The aim of the article is a comparative analysis of the nutritional value and economic efficiency of technical hemp seed products in relation to similar products from other crops. Materials and methods. Thegeneral scientific analytical method, the method of systematization, generalization, comparative, induction and deduction, graphical and statistical analysis are used. The empirical basis for comparing the nutritional value of industrial hemp seed products and similar products from other crops is the data of the caloric table. The determination of economic efficiency of products from seeds of industrial crops was carried out on the basis of research of market prices for seeds of various crops on the Agrovektor platform and products on the Prom.ua platform. Results. The study of the Ukrainian market allowed to identify eleven main products of processing technical hemp seeds: hemp oil, milk from hemp seeds, hemp protein, granola with hemp seeds, halva from hemp seeds, candies from hemp seeds, hemp flour, hemp bran, fiber (grist), hemp pasta and bread made from hemp flour. Analysis of the efficiency of production of technical hemp seeds allows us to say that now there is a need for increased development of production of granola, halva, pasta and candy for sale in both domestic and foreign markets. For other products, the intensification of production requires thorough work on the formation of consumer commitment, and hence an increase in demand and market prices. In addition, even the intensification of production from technical hemp seeds with the highest level of efficiency in comparison with other similar products requires overcoming the existing barriers of a regulatory nature. Conclusion. The intensification of production of technical hemp seeds in Ukraine is expedient both from the standpoint of providing profits to processing enterprises and from the standpoint of providing consumers with products with unique nutritional value. Due to the unique properties of hemp seeds and products from them, it is possible to produce products that are most fully focused on a wide range of consumers who do not tolerate gluten, involved in sports, follow a diet for weight loss, are vegans, and follow a healthy balanced diet. In terms of economic efficiency, it is expedient to intensify the production of granola, halva, pasta and candies from technical hemp seeds. The intensification of production of technical hemp seeds requires a revision of the quota procedure and licensing of technical hemp production, as this issue is the basis for the formation of raw materials for production.

Growing consumer interest in hemp oilseed supplements requires quality control. Therefore, appropriate, effective and verified analytical methods are needed for the determination of some bioactive cannabinoids in them. The aim of the study is to present an extended (compared to our previous research) validated high performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD) method for the determination of four cannabinoids (cannabidiol, cannabidiolic acid, cannabinol and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) in an oil matrix, which was used to determine these cannabinoids in seven commercial hemp oil supplements. In our method, the isolation of the target compounds was based on liquid extraction with acetonitrile combined with the freezing (at −41 °C) of the oil phase. The results show that in some cases, the determined concentrations of cannabinoids in the tested supplements differ significantly from those declared by the manufacturers. As for the main medicinal cannabinoid (CBD) in hemp oil supplements, in two cases, the measured concentration was significantly lower (1.45 and 1.81%) than the declared (5 and 5%), and in the other supplements, the obtained results confirm the declared amount of CBD within the error range from 3.29 to 9.2%. Therefore, to ensure the safe and beneficial use of these supplements by consumers, it is necessary to monitor their cannabinoid composition.

Immortelle, as rich source of chlorogenic acid and the phloroglucinol alpha-pyrone compound arzanol, possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, affects cell regeneration, and has positive effect on many skin conditions. Hemp oil, characterized by a favorable omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, as well as an abundance of essential fatty acids and vitamin E, participates in immunoregulation and also act as an anti-inflammatory. In the present study, we examined the effect on the skin of creams and emulgels with immortelle extract and hemp oil, by comparing them to placebo samples and a non-treated control. A long-term in vivo study of biophysical skin characteristics, which lasted for 30 days, was conducted on 25 healthy human volunteers. Measured parameters were electrical capacitance of the stratum corneum, trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), and skin pH and erythema index. Further, a sensory study was carried out in which the panelists had to choose descriptive terms for sensory attributes in questionnaire. The results showed that application of all preparations led to increase of skin hydration and TEWL reduction, while the skin was not irritated, and its normal pH was not disrupted. This study also showed importance of the carrier. Not only were emulgels described by panelists as preparations with better sensory properties, there was a significant difference between the skin hydration effect of emulgel with immortelle extract and hemp oil compared to the placebo emulgel, which was not the case with creams. Such findings indicated enhanced delivery of herbal active substances from emulgel compared to the cream.

AbstractSterols are a highly complex group of lipophilic compounds present in the unsaponifiable matter of virtually all living organisms. In this study, we developed a novel gas chromatography with mass spectrometry selected ion monitoring (GC/MS-SIM) method for the comprehensive analysis of sterols after saponification and silylation. A new referencing system was introduced by means of a series of saturated fatty acid pyrrolidides (FAPs) as internal standards. Linked with retention time locking (RTL), the resulting FAP retention indices (RIFAP) of the sterols could be determined with high precision. The GC/MS-SIM method was based on the parallel measurement of 17 SIM ions in four time windows. This set included eight molecular ions and seven diagnostic fragment ions of silylated sterols as well as two abundant ions of FAPs. Altogether, twenty molecular ions of C27- to C31-sterols with 0–3 double bonds were included in the final method. Screening of four common vegetable oils (sunflower oil, hemp oil, rapeseed oil, and corn oil) enabled the detection of 30 different sterols and triterpenes most of which could be identified. In various groups of the population of Ukraine due to an unbalanced diet there is a “hidden hunger”, which leads to a slowdown in intellectual development and reduced productivity, falling production capacity as a result of increased morbidity and disability, as well as catastrophic loss of human potential. The article is devoted to the development of technology for complex processing of industrial hemp seeds. It is shown that the scientific substantiation and creation of the specified technology provides production of food hemp products of high quality, and the amount of waste in their production is minimal. A technological scheme of industrial hemp seeds complex processing has been developed, which consists of two main technological lines: hemp seed felling, production of hemp oil and bulk hemp products. These processes can be both sequential and parallel depending on the needs of production. The scheme provides for the production of only hemp kernel, or only oil and cake, or oil and bulk hemp products (flour, “protein” and bran). According to the developed technological scheme of industrial hemp seeds complex processing, the following ready hemp products were obtained: kernel, oil, “protein”, flour and bran. The technical conditions for these products were developed and approved in 2019 by the director of Desnaland Limited Liability Company. Finished products can be used as stand-alone foods and as ingredients in health food technologies. According to the results of the calculations, the cost of 1 kg of hemp kernel is 226.49 UAH, 1 kg of hemp oil is 206.65 UAH, 1 sachet of hemp oil is 4.13 UAH, 1 kg of hemp “protein” is 503.78 UAH, 1 kg of hemp flour is 16.23 UAH, 1 kg of hemp bran is 39.64 UAH; the level of profitability is 42.1 %, the payback period is 2.1 years. The proposed technology of industrial hemp seeds complex processing can be recommended for use in the agro-industrial sector.
