Superpixel segmentation has become a crucial pre-processing tool to reduce computation in many computer vision applications. In this paper, a superpixel extraction algorithm based on a seed strategy of contour encoding (SSCE) for infrared images is presented, which can generate superpixels with high boundary adherence and compactness. Specifically, SSCE can solve the problem of superpixels being unable to self-adapt to the image content. First, a contour encoding map is obtained by ray scanning the binary edge map, which ensures that each connected domain belongs to the same homogeneous region. Second, according to the seed sampling strategy, each seed point can be extracted from the contour encoding map. The initial seed set, which is adaptively scattered based on the local structure, is capable of improving the capability of boundary adherence, especially for small regions. Finally, the initial superpixels limited by the image contour are generated by clustering and refined by merging similar adjacent superpixels in the region adjacency graph (RAG) to reduce redundant superpixels. Experimental results on a self-built infrared dataset and the public datasets BSD500 and 3Dircadb demonstrate the generalization ability in grayscale and medical images, and the superiority of the proposed method over several state-of-the-art methods in terms of accuracy and compactness.

The crossing compression of retinal artery and vein is closely related to retinal vein occlusion, so detecting the contraction angle of the crossed vein blood vessel can assist to diagnose the retinal vein occlusion diseases. Through pretreating methods such as filtering, enhancement and edge extraction, the binary edge images can be extracted. The candidate feature points can be obtained by the corner point detection method based on chord-to-point distance accumulation (CPDA). The self-adaptive rectangular filter is used to screen out the crossing point of candidate angle, so as to fit the edge curves and figure out the contraction degree of vein. The experimental results show that this algorithm can better detect the contraction degree of crossed vein blood vessel, with an average error remaining at ± 1∘ under different resolutions.

Image Mosaicing is an image processing technique that arises from the need of having a more realistic view of the real world wider than the view captured by the lenses of the available cameras. In this paper, a sequence of images will be mosaiced using binary edge detection algorithm in a cloud-computing environment to improve processing speed and accuracy. The authors have used Platform as a Service (PaaS) to provide a number of nodes in the cloud to run the computational intensive image processing and stitching algorithms. This increased the processing speed as most of image processing algorithms deal with every single pixel in the image. Message Passing Interface (MPI) is used for message passing among the compute-nodes in the cloud and a MapReduce technique is used for image distribution and collection, where the root node is used as reducer and the others as mappers. After applying the algorithm on different sequence of images and different machines on JUST cloud, the authors have achieved high mosaicing accuracy, and the execution time has been improved when comparing it with sequential execution on the images.

This paper proposes an accurate iris localization algorithm for the iris images acquired under near infrared (NIR) illuminations and having noise due to eyelids, eyelashes, lighting reflections, non-uniform illumination, eyeglasses and eyebrow hair etc. The two main contributions in the paper are an edge map generation technique for pupil boundary detection and an adaptive circular Hough transform (CHT) algorithm for limbic boundary detection, which not only make the iris localization more accurate but faster also. The edge map for pupil boundary detection is generated on intersection (logical AND) of two binary edge maps obtained using thresholding, morphological operations and Sobel edge detection, which results in minimal false edges caused by the noise. The adaptive CHT algorithm for limbic boundary detection searches for a set of two arcs in an image instead of a full circle that counters iris-occlusions by the eyelids and eyelashes. The proposed CHT and adaptive CHT implementations for pupil and limbic boundary detection respectively use a two-dimensional accumulator array that reduces memory requirements. The proposed algorithm gives the accuracies of 99.7% and 99.38% for the challenging CASIA-Iris-Thousand (version 4.0) and CASIA-Iris-Lamp (version 3.0) databases respectively. The average time cost per image is 905 msec. The proposed algorithm is compared with the previous work and shows better results.
