In this paper, the adaptive control design is investigated for the chaos synchronization of two identical hyperchaotic Liu systems. First, an adaptive control law with two inputs is proposed based on Lyapunov stability theory. Secondly, two other control schemes are obtained based on a further analysis of the proposed adaptive control law. Finally, numerical simulations are presented to validate the effectiveness and correctness of these results.

Soft robotic systems typically follow conventional control schemes, where actuators are supplied with dedicated inputs that are regulated through software. However, in recent years an alternative trend is being explored, where the control architecture can be simplified by harnessing the passive mechanical characteristics of the soft robotic system. This approach is named “morphological control”, and it can be used to decrease the number of components (tubing, valves and regulators) required by the controller. In this paper, we demonstrate morphological control of bio-inspired asymmetric motions for systems of soft bending actuators that are interconnected with passive flow restrictors. We introduce bending actuators consisting out of a cylindrical latex balloon in a flexible PVC shell. By tuning the radii of the tube and the shell, we obtain a nonlinear relation between internal pressure and volume in the actuator with a peak and valley in pressure. Because of the nonlinear characteristics of the actuators, they can be assembled in a system with a single pressure input where they bend in a discrete, preprogrammed sequence. We design and analyze two such systems inspired by the asymmetric movements of biological cilia. The first replicates the swept area of individual cilia, having a different forward and backward stroke, and the second generates a travelling wave across an array of cilia.

Fault tolerance has been known as one of the main advantages of multiphase drives. When an open-circuit fault happens, smooth torque can be obtained without any additional hardware. However, a reconfiguration strategy is required to determine new reference currents. Despite advantages of non-sinusoidal electromotive forces (NS-EMFs) such as high torque density, multi-harmonics existing in NS-EMFs cause more challenges for control, especially under faulty conditions. Therefore, to guarantee high-quality vector control of multiphase drives with multi-harmonic NS-EMFs, this two-part study proposes control schemes using adaptive linear neurons (Adalines) to adaptively eliminate torque ripples. The proposed simple Adalines are efficient because of taking advantage of the knowledge of rotor position and of torque harmonic rank induced by the NS-EMFs. The control scheme using an Adaline for healthy mode was described in part I of this study. In this second part, the control scheme using another Adaline for an open-circuit operation, under the impacts of multi-harmonics in NS-EMFs, is proposed. Notably, smooth torque and similar copper losses in the remaining healthy phases can be obtained. Experimental tests are carried out on a seven-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) with a high total harmonic distortion (THD = 38%) of NS-EMFs. A demonstration video is provided with this paper.

With the rapid use of the Four-Wheel Drive System (FWDS) worldwide, the necessity of having an adequate control system to control speed and direction in FWDS is extremely required. For this purpose, several control schemes are available in the literature to control the speed and direction in FWDS which should be fast convergence of the control, continuous control performance, and solving external disturbances. In latest years, finite-time controllers (FTC) have gained more consideration from many researchers in the control area, who have expressed applications in several procedures and systems. This research provides a major review of the FTC approaches via both input and output feedbacks for controlling FWDS.

Abstract A newly developed tool to simulate a tokamak full--discharge is presented. The tokamak "flight--simulator" Fenix couples the tokamak control system with a fast and reduced plasma model, yet realistic enough to take into account several of the plasma non--linearities. Distinguishing feature of this modeling tool is that it only requires the Pulse Schedule (PS) as input to the simulator. The output is a virtual realization of the full discharge, which time traces can then be used to judge if the PS satisfies control/physics goals or needs to be revised. This tool is thought for routine use in the control--room before each pulse is performed, but can also be used off--line to correct PS in advance, or to develop and validate reduced models, control schemes, and in general the simulation framework.

Photovoltaic (PV) system installation has encouraged to be further expedited to minimize climate change and thus, rooftop solar PV systems have been sparkled in every corner of the world. However, due to technological constraints linked to voltage and currents, the PV hosting capacity has been substantially constrained. Therefore, this paper proposes a competent approach to maximize PV hosting capacity in a low voltage distribution network based on voltage control and dynamic line rating of the cables. Coordinated voltage control is applied with an on-load tap changing transformer, and reactive power compensation and active power curtailment of PV inverters. A case study with probabilistic and deterministic assessments is carried out on a real Sri Lankan network to show how the PV hosting capacity is constrained. The findings revealed the capability of integrated voltage control schemes and dynamic line rating in maximizing hosting capacity. The study is expanded by incorporating the PV rephasing approach in conjunction with the aforementioned control techniques, and the effectiveness of PV-rephasing is clearly demonstrated. When compared to voltage control and conductor static rating, the combined rephasing, voltage control, and DLR yielded a 60% increase in PV hosting capacity.

Controlled drainage by regulating the groundwater level in open ditches is necessary to ensure the normal growth of crops in Northern Huaihe River Plain, China. The groundwater model MODFLOW was calibrated and validated in a representative area, and was then conducted to simulate the groundwater under different main drainage ditch water depth control schemes during the growth period of corn and wheat. Then the scenario with highest water depth (Scenario 20) from 1989 to 2019 was simulated, and the annual cumulative drought and waterlogging intensity (ACDWI) were analyzed in each decade and in different hydrological years. The results showed that the study area was dominated by drought stress. The lowest level of drought stress was achieved under Scenario 20. The frequency of drought gradually decreased from north to south in the study area. Moreover, the ACDWI decreased with increase of precipitation during 1989 to 2019. The results indicated that it was important to store water during the dry season, while it is also necessary to control the drainage in the rainy season to drain excess water on time. The results suggested that the water depth of the main drainage ditch should be regulated by zoning and by season to alleviate crop drought and waterlogging.
