This paper designs an energy allocation scheme based on maximum flow modeling for a microgrid containing renewable energy generators and consumer facilities. Basically, the flow graph consists of a set of nodes representing consumers or generators as well as a set of weighted links representing the amount of energy generation, consumer-side demand, and transmission cable capacity. The main idea lies in that a special node is added to account for the interaction with the main grid and that two-pass allocation is executed. In the first pass, the maximum flow solver decides the amount of the insufficiency and thus how much to purchase from the main grid. The second pass runs the flow solver again to fill the energy lack and calculates the surplus of renewable energy generation. The performance measurement result obtained from a prototype implementation shows that the generated energy is stably distributed over multiple consumers until the energy generation reaches the maximum link capacity.

In the past few decades, there have been many numerical studies on the scour around offshore pipelines, most of which concern two-dimensional setups, with the pipeline infinitely long and the flow perpendicular to the pipeline. Based on the Ansys FLUENT flow solver, this study establishes a numerical tool to study the three-dimensional scour around pipelines of finite lengths. The user-defined functions are written to calculate the sediment transport rate, update the bed elevation, and adapt the computational mesh to the new boundary. The correctness of the model has been verified against the measurements of the conventional two-dimensional scour around a long pipe and the three-dimensional scour around a sphere. A series of computations are subsequently carried out to discover how the scour hole is dependent on the pipeline length. It is found that the equilibrium scour depth increases with the pipeline length until the pipeline length exceeds four times the pipe diameter.

The increasing introduction of renewable energy capacity has changed the perspective on the operation of conventional power plants, introducing the necessity of reaching extreme off-design conditions. There is a strong interest in the development and optimization of technologies that can be retrofitted to an existing power plant to enhance flexibility as well as increase performance and lower emissions. Under the framework of the European project TURBO-REFLEX, a typical F-class gas turbine compressor designed and manufactured by Ansaldo Energia has been studied. Numerical analyses were performed using the TRAF code, which is a state-of-the-art 3D CFD RANS/URANS flow solver. In order to assess the feasibility of lower minimum environmental load operation, by utilizing a reduction in the compressor outlet mass-flow rate, with a safe stability margin, two different solutions have been analyzed: blow-off extractions and extra-closure of Variable Inlet Guide Vanes. The numerical steady-state results are compared and discussed in relation to an experimental campaign, which was performed by Ansaldo Energia. The purpose is to identify the feasibility of the technologies and implementation opportunity in the existing thermal power plant fleet.
