In this article, the author examines the concept and procedural and legal significance of necessary (mandatory) forensic evidence. It analyzes the formulated by M.K. Treushnikov, who was the first in the procedural doctrine who paid attention to the legal obligation to use certain means of proof when establishing certain legal facts, the positive rule of admissibility of evidence, the positions of other authors on the issue of necessary evidence in civil proceedings. The rule of necessary (obligatory) evidence is considered as a special rule of judicial proof. At the end of the study it is concluded that the allocation of necessary evidence is carried out from the same content of factual data, reflecting the same fact, based on the peculiarities of their procedural form. Necessary evidence in its form is a specific type of a written document or expert opinion. Thus, the rule of proving the circumstances of the case with the use of necessary evidence concerns the form of evidence, beyond its content. The thesis is also put forward that necessary evidence, due to the specifics of the procedure for its formation, the presence of requirements established by law to its form and content, has a significant evidentiary value.

This study supplements factual data on the commemoration of the twentieth anniversary of the execution of the UPR army soldiers by Bolshevik troops, identified in historiographic sources as the “Second Bazaar”. Another issue considered in the paper is the execution of the local Jewish population, carried out exactly on the day of commemoration of the victims of the Bazaar tragedy. The methodological basis of the study is constituted by the methods of source heuristics. By detecting, processing, and introducing a new set of archival sources – archival and criminal cases – into scientific circulation, the existing factual basis on the specified events has been expanded. The contradictory and subjective nature of the given sources also necessitates the use of appropriate methodological tools. Therefore, the method which Robin George Collingwood once described as “cross-examination on the bench” is utilized, when the historian “cross-interrogates the sources to extract information that they did not disclose in their previous testimony, or because they did not want to give it, or because they did not have it”. To fully cover and reconstruct the specified events, a descriptive method is employed. The scientific novelty of the paper lies in the fact that it presents a comprehensive account of specific details of the preparation and commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Bazaar tragedy, and in fact, it is the first in modern Ukrainian historiography generalized study of the local Jewish population’s execution on the day of the Bazar anniversary. Conclusions. The events of the “Second Bazaar” have become one of the symbols of the Ukrainian national struggle for statehood, representing another tragic page in the history of the Ukrainian and Jewish peoples. Further research might be conducted to personalize the members and sympathizers of the OUN, participants of the commemoration events of the “Second Bazaar”, victims of Nazi repressions and determine the exact number of Jewish people killed.

The author reviews the first six chapters of the monograph by John S. Major and Constance Cook “Ancient China: A History” (New York, London: Routledge, Taylor and Francis Group, 2017. 300 p.). The authors of the book made an attempt to briefly review the history of ancient China on the basis of a compilation of factual data from the works of the most prominent researchers of these periods in Europe and the United States. It is shown that the authors of the compilation mainly follow the Chinese historical tradition, repeating the basic information from the classical Confucian treatises of the early Imperial time. It is particularly significant that the authors make mistakes that indicate the formation of their own tradition of writing the history of China in the United States.

The present article seeks to study the concepts of “love” and “homeland” from linguistic and cultural perspectives. Within the frames of the article an attempt is made to elucidate these concepts in Scottish ballads and media. The article also dwells upon the inherent nature of the aforementioned concepts as underlying units of Scottish culture since concepts as such reflect the mental activities of language speakers. The concepts of “love” and “homeland” embody crucial values and images common to any linguo-culture. The linguo-cultural analysis of factual data taken from folk texts (Scottish ballads) and media discourse (articles) sheds light upon not only the lexical actualization but also modern perception of the given concepts. The choice of the material is conditioned by the necessity to highlight their diachronic evolution and their importance in contemporary research. A special reference is made to the media coverage of the Scottish Independence referendum, which illustrates Scots’ attitude towards their ethnic identity and their country as a whole.

This article attempts to illustrate the interrelations between theory and history in John Stuart Mill’s political economy. Mill follows a stages theory from the tradition of the Scottish historical school and viewed history as an essential part in understanding economic phenomena. The article stresses the affinities between Mill and the Scottish historical school while at the same time showing how Mill moves between theory and history to verify his views or to show the limit of his economic analysis. This movement, viewed as a part of his attempt to sketch out a middle way between Ricardianism and inductivism, provided Mill the opportunity to make an extensive use of factual data before the professionalization of economic history proper in the late nineteenth century.

The ending of preliminary investigation is final stage of pre-trial criminal proceedings, consisting in the preparation of materials by the person conducting the preliminary investigation, and the transfer of these materials to the prosecutor. This article is devoted to topical issues of the ending the inquiry in an abbreviated form, in particular, the problematic issues related to the compilation of the indictment. The analysis made it possible to establish that the indictment is the procedural decision of the inquiry officer who completes the criminal prosecution when conducting the inquiry in an abbreviated form in which he, in the form of a state-imperious command, within the limits of his competence and in accordance with the criminal procedure law, on the basis of the factual data established in the case, gives answers to the legal questions arising in the case about the guilt of the person who committed the crime. In addition, significant shortcomings in the legal regulation of the procedure for ending an inquiry in an abbreviated form with the indictment have been identified, which are discussed in this article.

Background. The Witwatersrand gold province located in South Africa is the richest in the world. The Witwatersrand deposits are composite, where osmirids and diamonds are mined along with gold, silver and uranium. The genesis of the Witwatersrand deposits is controversial. Most local geologists support the hypothesis of the presence of paleoplacer deposits with subsequent metamorphic transformation of ore-bearing conglomerates. In addition, there are aeolian, hydrothermal-sedimentary, hydrothermal-sedimentary-metamorphic and magmatic models of ore formation.Aim. To establish the genesis of the Witwatersrand deposits.Materials and methods. Analysis of published literature and factual data.Results. Osmirids and diamonds are mined along with gold, silver and uranium from the composite Witwatersrand deposits. Such a set of useful components is not known in any of the deposits of magmatic or hydrothermal genesis. Considering the confinement of useful components to conglomerates, the detrital nature of most of the gold grains and the presence of various accompanying minerals in the heavy fraction, characteristic of igneous rocks of felsic, basic and ultrabasic composition, the hypothesis of the primary alluvial nature of the deposits of the Witwatersrand province looks the most reasonable.Conclusions. The factual material indicates an alluvial origin of the Witwatersrand deposits with subsequent metamorphic transformation of ore-bearing reefs. The primary alluvial formation of ore-bearing conglomerates is indicated by the confinement of gold and uranium to channel facies with a tendency to accumulate in the basal horizons of the reefs, the presence of rounded gold particles bearing the traces of transportation in alluvial flows, as well as a set of minerals in the heavy fraction of concentrate, characteristic of placers.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the social situation of disenfranchised citizens. The object of the study is an ordinary citizen of the USSR: a former rural teacher and the wife of a priest Serafima Aleksandrovna Kilina (born in 1888), the subject of the article is the reconstruction of her biography. The methodological basis of the research is the anthropological approach and the synthesis of macro- and micro-history. The main source of the study is the personal file of a citizen who filed a petition before the election commission to restore their electoral rights. The personal file is a complex and multi-component source, which contains documents reflecting the quasi-judicial procedure for considering the applicant's appeal, as well as necessary and sufficient materials for making a decision, received at the initiative of the applicant or members of the election commission. The source base is supplemented by legal acts regulating the deprivation and restoration of voting rights. Materials of S. A. Kilina's personal file contain significant factual data that allow us to reconstruct her biography; they describe the bureaucratic procedures figuratively and in detail; they contain fragments of direct speech of the participants of the events, which makes this historical source very valuable. S. A. Kilina's biography includes both typical and unique facts that allow us to expand our understanding of the procedure for disenfranchisement and employment practices in early Soviet society. The fate of the citizen in the transition era allows us to reflect the process of social construction of the "new person", which, contrary to the declared goals, not only provoked downward social mobility and negative social selection, but could have more tragic consequences.
