Most of combustible dusts present both fire and explosion hazard. Explosion may occur at certain concentrations of dust mixed with air and in the presence of an ignition source. The threat posed by this real danger was confirmed by the events that took place in economic units such as: feed factories, wood products, textile industry, steel, etc. Among the parameters of explosiveness of combustible dust, which can cause an explosion, we mention: maximum explosion pressure, lower explosion limit, explosive index, minimum ignition energy, electrical resistivity of dust, minimum ignition temperature of dust layer and cloud, particle size and concentration of dust in suspension. The current paper presents the results of determinations of combustible wood dust concentrations, performed at an important economic unit, manufacturing veneer and wood panels, at a dusting ventilation installation composed of fan, cyclone and textile filter. These determinations were made in the pipe connecting the fan and the bag filter, to assess possible danger of explosion in the pipe, by relating the measured concentration to the lower explosion limit (concentration of wood dust).

This article discusses the overpressure of a gas explosion and the performance of applying water mist for explosion suppression. According to the experimental results, the larger the opening area, the more difficult it is for pressure to accumulate, resulting in lower overpressure of a gas explosion. When the opening was opened under a high air speed environment, the amount of entrained air was greater. Consequently, the occurrence time of the explosion was shorter than at a low air speed. Despite the water mist nozzle being installed outside the enclosure, a propane gas explosion still occurred regardless of the amount of water mist used, failing to suppress the explosion. However, the water mist nozzle installed inside the enclosure supplied an adequate amount of water mist that could wash a part of the propane, resulting in the fuel concentration dropping below the lower explosion limit, hindering the occurrence of an explosion.

AbstractIncense is an indispensable material with religion and life in Asia. It is also a bridge of cultural expression and inheritance. Because the operating environment concentration of dust generated during the production process is considerable, most of the research pertaining to the hazard of incense factories has investigated air pollution, such as PM2.5, PM10, and VOCs. However, the production of incense causes dust dispersion, high temperature from ovens, and static electricity generated by friction. It can all possibly lead a dust explosion. To prevent and alleviate hazard from re-occurring, we used sandalwood dust at an incense factory in Taiwan, measured the effect of moisture content on the explosion parameters under normal conditions by 20-L apparatus, and used the oven to diminish its moisture content to 0%, 10.0%, and 15.0% as a control group to analyze the explosion characteristics at the different moisture contents, such as maximum explosion pressure and explosion limit. The results showed that the minimum ignition energy of dry dust was 30 mJ. Beyond doubt, incense factories face potential explosion hazards. The above results could be evaluated by the most dangerous range to avoid incense dust in this range at the workplace, lessening hazards caused by a dust explosion. The effect of moisture content on the suppression of the dust explosion was explored.

In order to investigate the change law of the explosion characteristic parameters of hybrid mixture of coal dust and gas, and then establish an effective prediction method of these parameters, the maximum explosion pressure, explosion index, and lower explosion limit of coal dust and gas mixtures were measured in a standard 20 L spherical explosion system. Four different kinds of hybrid mixture were selected in this study and they are composed of coal dust with different components and gas respectively. According to the measured results, the change law of the explosion characteristic parameters of hybrid mixture of coal dust and gas was analyzed, and the prediction method of these parameters was discussed. The results show that the addition of gas to a coal dust cloud can obviously increase its maximum explosion pressure and explosion index and notably reduce its minimum explosion concentration. On increasing the gas equivalent ratio, the maximum explosion pressure of coal dust and gas mixture increases linearly and the explosion index increases quadratically, while the decrease curve of the lower explosion limit is nonlinear. Based on these change laws, the methods for predicting the maximum explosion pressure and the explosion index of hybrid mixture of coal dust and gas were established respectively. The applicability of the existing methods for predicting the lower explosion limit of hybrid mixture to coal dust and gas mixture was demonstrated.

In the actual production and operation of enterprises, it is sometimes inevitable that the floating roof will fall to the bottom. This paper calculates the explosion limit of the mixture of oil gas under the floating roof, and confirms that the concentration of oil gas will be within the explosion limit under certain circumstances. Through the monitoring and analysis of the oil-gas mixing space below the floating roof, corresponding control measures are proposed to deal with the potential safety hazards of the floating plate falling to the bottom.
