Abstract Background The execution of undergraduate thesis is a period in which students have an opportunity to develop their scientific knowledge. However, many barriers could prevent the learning process. This cross-sectional study aimed to analyze the scientific dissemination of results from undergraduate theses in physical therapy programs and verify the existence of barriers and challenges in the preparation of undergraduate thesis. Second, to investigate whether project characteristics and thesis development barriers were associated with the dissemination of undergraduate thesis results. Methods Physical therapists who graduated as of 2015, from 50 different educational institutions, answered an online questionnaire about barriers faced during the execution of undergraduate thesis and about scientific dissemination of their results. Results Of 324 participants, 43% (n = 138) of participants disseminated their results, and the main form of dissemination was publishing in national journals (18%, n = 58). Regarding the barriers, 76% (n = 246) of participants reported facing some difficulties, and the main challenge highlighted was the lack of scientific knowledge (28%, n = 91). Chances of dissemination were associated with barriers related to scientific understanding and operational factors, such as the type of institution, institutional facilities, and involvement with other projects. Conclusion Scientific knowledge seems to be a determining factor for the good development of undergraduate theses. In addition, it is clear the need to stimulate more qualified dissemination that reaches a larger audience. Changes in operational and teaching factors may improve the undergraduate thesis quality. However, the importance of rethinking scientific education within physical therapy programs draws attention.

Personal well-being is a central concept in philosophical discussions of education and its aims. Although the work of general philosophers like Nussbaum, Griffin, Raz and Sen on the topic has been influential here, there has been next-to-no interest among philosophers of education in John Rawls’s work on ‘the good’ – in great contrast to interest in his work on ‘the right’, and despite the key place that his theory of the good has in his Theory of Justice (TJ), Chapter 7. This paper explores a likely reason for this lack of interest. This is connected with Rawls’s 1942 undergraduate thesis on the meaning of sin and faith. While there are many continuities between this – eg. to do with communitarianism and equality – and the theory of the right in TJ, there are none in the area of the good, since the thesis rejected the notion for theological reasons. In writing TJ, therefore, having long abandoned his Christian belief, Rawls had a rich background of earlier work on the right which he was able to work up into a powerful argument, while in the area of the good he had to start from scratch. The result, drawing on Josiah Royce’s ideas about plans of life, is disappointing and open to fairly obvious objections. In the light of this, it is not surprising that Rawls’s views on the good have had so little influence in philosophy of education.

Bachelor's degree is a final step before graduating first four years of studying at the university. The students show off their knowledge and research skills acquired by the University that are based on their original vision and scientific information. Writing a bachelor's thesis is a responsible, interesting and at the same time stressful job. It requires formal characteristics of its performance, which determine the content, form and style of the paper. The researcher of the undergraduate thesis raises the problem, analyzes, substantiates and suggests the solutions, evaluates the research results and concludes. During the working process new knowledge is activated which is based on analytical skills and critical reasoning.Maintaining academic standards in the paper makes it more fruitful because it gives the reader a sense that the author of the paper depends on reliable academic sources to support his or her own reasoning and position. The completed paper will be checked for plagiarism. There are numerous programs which reveal the originality of the work. After all, there is a big temptation of plagiarism in the papers.Preventing plagiarism offers to protect someone else’s intellectual property and make the student aware that he or she has to respect the rights of intellectual property and distance himself or herself from plagiarism. Avoiding Plagiarism in the paper is possible if the student has been clearly informed about the mechanisms or responses that plagiarism may cause in his or her work. Awareness is largely responsible for preventing plagiarism, however, only the moral part of the problem is not enough. We need to pay more attention to proper implementation of the academic techniques in the academic environment.

An abstract is a brief overview of a research paper. Indonesian undergraduate students are often required to submit their thesis abstracts in Indonesian and English. Various studies related to rhetorical move and translation techniques of abstracts have been done previously, but not many analyzed undergraduate students’ thesis abstracts across languages. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the move-step of the abstracts, and to see translation techniques in different abstract moves. This study used 60 undergraduate thesis abstracts from English Language and Literature and Indonesian Language Literature study programs as the data. As the framework for the data analysis, this study employed Hyland’s (2000) five-move model and Molina & Albir’s (2002) translation techniques. The findings show that despite writing in different languages, both Indonesian and English abstracts were realized with similar rhetorical moves and steps. Move 3 and 4 were found in all of the abstracts, while Move 5 was only realized in small numbers across languages. In relation to translation techniques, it is found that Literal translation is used more frequently than other translation techniques. This study recommends a more extensive study that involves more data from different fields to expand the existing knowledge relating to rhetorical move and translation techniques in the academic field, especially in undergraduate students’ abstracts.

Undergraduate thesis as the final project, or in Indonesian called as Tugas Akhir, for each undergraduate student is a pre-requisite before student graduation and the successfulness in finishing the project becomes as one of learning outcomes among others. Determining the topic of the final project according to the ability of students is an important thing. One strategy to decide the topic is reading some literatures but it takes up more time. There is a need for a recommendation system to help students in determining the topic according to their abilities or subject understanding which is based on their academic transcripts. This study focused on a system for final project topic recommendations based on evaluating competencies in previous academic transcripts of graduated students. Collected data of previous final projects, namely titles and abstracts weighted by term occurences of TF-IDF (term frequency–inverse document frequency) and grouped by using K-Means Clustering. From each cluster result, we prepared candidates for recommended topics using Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) with Gibbs Sampling that focusing on the word distribution of each topic in the cluster. Some evaluations were performed to evaluate the optimal cluster number, topic number and then made more thorough exploration on the recommendation results. Our experiments showed that the proposed system could recommend final project topic ideas based on student competence represented in their academic transcripts.
