Electrostatic monitoring is a unique and rapid developing technique applied in the prognostics and health management of the tribological system based on electrostatic charging and sensing phenomenon. It has considerable advantages in condition monitoring of tribo-contacts with high sensitivity and resolution. Unfortunately, the monitoring result can be affected due to the switch of operating conditions that reduces its accuracy. This paper presents a dynamic adaptive fusion approach, moving window local outlier factor based on electrostatic features to overcome the influence. Life cycle experiments of rolling bearings and railcar gearbox were carried out on an electrostatic monitoring platform. The MWLOF method was used to extract and analyze the experimental data, combined with the Pauta criterion to judge wear faults quantitatively, and compare with other feature extraction results. It is verified that the proposed method can overcome the influence of changes in working conditions on the monitoring results, improve the monitoring sensitivity, and provide an accurate reference for friction and wear faults.

Often in practice, during the process of image acquisition, the acquired image gets degraded due to various factors like noise, motion blur, mis-focus of a camera, atmospheric turbulence, etc. resulting in the image unsuitable for further analysis or processing. To improve the quality of these degraded images, a double hybrid restoration filter is proposed on the two same sets of input images and the output images are fused to get a unified filter in combination with the concept of image fusion. First image set is processed by applying deconvolution using Wiener Filter (DWF) twice and decomposing the output image using Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). Similarly, second image set is also processed simultaneously by applying Deconvolution using Lucy–Richardson Filter (DLR) twice followed by the above procedure. The proposed filter gives a better performance as compared to DWF and DLR filters in case of both blurry as well as noisy images. The proposed filter is compared with some standard deconvolution algorithms and also some state-of-the-art restoration filters with the help of seven image quality assessment parameters. Simulation results prove the success of the proposed algorithm and at the same time, visual and quantitative results are very impressive.

Automated Driving Systems (ADSs) commend a substantial reduction of human-caused road accidents while simultaneously lowering emissions, mitigating congestion, decreasing energy consumption and increasing overall productivity. However, achieving higher SAE levels of driving automation and complying with ISO26262 C and D Automotive Safety Integrity Levels (ASILs) is a multi-disciplinary challenge that requires insights into safety-critical architectures, multi-modal perception and real-time control. This paper presents an assorted effort carried out in the European H2020 ECSEL project—PRYSTINE. In this paper, we (1) investigate Simplex, 1oo2d and hybrid fail-operational computing architectures, (2) devise a multi-modal perception system with fail-safety mechanisms, (3) present a passenger vehicle-based demonstrator for low-speed autonomy and (4) suggest a trust-based fusion approach validated on a heavy-duty truck.

Artificial intelligence (AI) approaches continue to spread in almost every research and technology branch. However, a simple adaptation of AI methods and algorithms successfully exploited in one area to another field may face unexpected problems. Accelerating the discovery of new functional materials in chemical self-driving laboratories has an essential dependence on previous experimenters’ experience. Self-driving laboratories help automate and intellectualize processes involved in discovering nanomaterials with required parameters that are difficult to transfer to AI-driven systems straightforwardly. It is not easy to find a suitable design method for self-driving laboratory implementation. In this case, the most appropriate way to implement is by creating and customizing a specific adaptive digital-centric automated laboratory with a data fusion approach that can reproduce a real experimenter’s behavior. This paper analyzes the workflow of autonomous experimentation in the self-driving laboratory and distinguishes the core structure of such a laboratory, including sensing technologies. We propose a novel data-centric research strategy and multilevel data flow architecture for self-driving laboratories with the autonomous discovery of new functional nanomaterials.

From its very beginning, the term “distant reading” (Moretti 2000) was controversial, displacing ‘close reading’ by relying on literary histories and thereby reflecting on the entire global literary system. One of the weaknesses of this approach lies in its exclusive reliance on canonical and authoritative historiographies, one or two for each national literature, something which is bound to over-simplify the complexities of national literatures. As is known, Moretti’s proposal became a ‘slogan’ for Digital Humanities while algorithmic manipulation of texts has taken the place of reading literary (human) histories. Yet the problem of over-simplification remains, albeit differently. As an alternative, we offer a fusion approach, radicalising Moretti’s idea. In this article, we demonstrate how computer-based analysis of different readings carried out by many readers – not necessarily professionals – produces a relatively minute picture. Our case study will be the Hebrew novel, from its emergence in 1853 to the present day; a manageable corpus on which we gather information using questionnaires we have carefully created in our lab. Alongside the presentation of our approach, the actual research, and its initial findings, we will reflect theoretically on the conceptual benefits, as well as the limits, of public distance reading.

Abstract. In this paper a sensor data fusion approach for characteristics field monitoring, based on time variance control model, is proposed. Distributed sensing and remote processing are the basic features of the employed architecture. In fact, in order to obtain meaningful information about the temporal and spatial variations, which characterize the field levels of some characteristics (electromagnetic, air pollution, seismic, etc), a distributed network of wireless and mobile smart-sensors has been designed.Starting from the partitioned configuration of a monitored geographic areas, this model allows to take into account the different levels of degradation over time in the sensors' performances associated with the different geographic partitions, progressively increasing the severity of the control. To this end, through the introduction of a reliability curve, a revised traditional control chart for variables is proposed. The proposed approach, further constituting an element of the scientific debate, aims to be a useful operational tool for professionals and managers employed in the environment control.
