The purpose of this research is to measure the motivation of nursing students, option: multi-skilled nurse (n=58), following their participation in an e-learning activity in the form of formative quizzes. The pedagogical scenario was based on Keller's ARCS motivation model. Data were collected through the IMMS questionnaire adopted from the ARCS model. The results show that the students were motivated by the e-learning activity (mean score = 4.22±, 51091), and that the motivation variables studied correlated positively with the overall motivation score (p-value < .001). Through this research, it was found that an instructional scenario based on the ARCS model had a positive impact on students' motivation for e-learning, thus encouraging allied health educators to design educational tools that can motivate nursing students.

Abstract Objective/background In mainland China, most universities offer general rehabilitation curricula rather than specialized curricula. The purpose of the current study is to investigate senior students’ academic motivation for rehabilitation and examine whether it varies among different curriculum structures, students’ gender, specific interests, and parental average education level. Methods This cross-sectional study recruited both senior students in general and those who specialized in rehabilitation curricula using an online survey. The Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) was used to measure academic motivation. Results The response rate was 74.68%, and 59 senior students in total (male: 34.48%; female: 65.52%) were analyzed. Twenty-nine (50.00%) students were from a general rehabilitation curriculum at Guangxi Medical University, and the rest (n = 29, 50.00%) were from a specialized curriculum at West China Medical School of Sichuan University. The overall average academic motivation score was 30.96 ± 5.92. Students in the specialized rehabilitation curriculum (32.85 ± 6.26) showed a significantly higher academic motivation score than those in the general rehabilitation curriculum (29.10 ± 5.00, p<0.05). Male (31.13 ± 5.67) and female (30.88 ± 6.12) students had equally high scores (p = 0.88). Students who had specific interests (29.81 ± 4.73) and those who did not (24.69 ± 4.92) shared the same academic motivation (t = 2.00, p = 0.06). Conclusions Senior rehabilitation science students in specialized curricula have higher levels of academic motivation than those in general curricula. There was no significant difference in academic motivation scores based on students’ gender, specific interests, or parental average education levels.

Abstract Summary: In this study, we found that patients with hypoparathyroidism had a problem with calcium medication compliance, and this problem increased with the duration of the disease. We also showed that patients are concerned about the possible side effects of drugs.Introduction: In this study, we aimed to evaluate adherence to avtive vitamin D and calcium replacement in patients with post surgical hypoparathyroidism. Methods: To elucidate the medication adherence, we performed a questionnaire survey using the six item “Medication adherence questionnaire’’(MAQ). The first, second and sixth questions reflect the motivation status of the patients whereas the third, forth and sixth questions reflect the knowledge about the medication that is received. The responses are scored and patients are classified regarding their motivation to and knowledge about the particular drug. Results: Totally 64 patients (Male:12/Female:52; mean age 48.6±11.6 years) who had postoperative hypoparathyroidism were included in our study. Median disease durance was 60 months (min-max; 12-295 months). We found that motivation score of calcium usage was significantly lower compared to vitamin D usage (p<0.001). The calcium motivation score was reversely correlated with disease duration (r= -0.256 and p=0.046). The most common worry about calcium usage was nephrotoxicity, and the most common worries about calcitriol treatment were kidney damage and polyuria. One third of the patients were taking oral calcium and calcitriol less than the recommended dose. Conclusion: One third of patients lack motivation to use calcium whereas half of the patients’ experiences anxiety about drug related side effects. This is a preliminary study showing that vital calcium and active vitamin D intake may be interrupted due to side effect anxiety and motivation can be increased by frequent visits and acknowledging the patient about the deleterious effects of drug withdrawal.

The study is aimed to identify the relationship between gender and race with needs motivation in academic performance for secondary school students. A survey method through questionnaire was used to collect motivation score and demographic of samples. A total of 400 form 3 students from five different secondary schools in Skudai, Johor were selected as respondents using a stratified random sampling technique. The David McClelland Motives questionnaire was used as a research instrument, in which it covers three main domains of motivation, namely needs of achievement, needs of affiliation, and needs of power. Inferential T-test and Pearson correlation were used to test the hypotheses. The T-test analysis stated that there was no significant difference between gender and race with motivation scores. Pearson correlation analysis showed that there was a weak significant positive relationship between motivation score and student's academic performance mean score. In a conclusion, need motivation has an influence on students’ academic performance. Teachers should assimilate a variety of teaching styles and encourage students from time to time to motivate them to strive for excellence.

This study presents a modified Group Objective Structured Clinical Experience (GOSCE) focused on difficult conversations, in which, due to limited time and financial resources, only some students could actively participate in scenarios. We aimed to evaluate the intervention, including differences between them and observers. The intervention was organized for sixth-year medical students at a Polish medical university. The study protocol assumed a pre-post analysis of students’ attitudes and self-efficacy of communication skills and their opinions about the intervention. Complete questionnaire pairs were returned by 126 students. The pre-post analysis revealed a significant improvement in their self-efficacy levels of almost all skills as well as their affective attitudes and belief in outcomes of communication learning. The improvement was significant among both the active participants and observers. It also showed a decrease in the motivation score, significant only in females. Regardless of their roles, students had positive opinions about the course and its particular aspects. The modified GOSCE may be an enjoyable and effective learning experience for students, especially in the light of limited resources. However, changes in their motivation score suggest the necessity to increase the importance of communication learning in the curriculum.

This study aimed to investigate the relationship between motivation and academic performance in chiropractic students. This was a cross-sectional study. Three hundred and sixty-two students were recruited from the 1st and 3rd quarters during the 2017-2018 academic year. Out of 362 students, 305 completed the Inventory of School Motivation (ISM). Total scores from the 1st quarter General Anatomy course and the 3rd quarter Immunology/Endocrinology course were used to measure the 1st quarter and 3rd quarter academic performance, respectively. The mean total motivation score for all students was 28.40 ± 3.79 (mean ± SD). There was no signi?cant difference in total motivation score between students in the two quarters (p > .05). The mean of the 1st quarter praise scores was statistically significantly higher than those of the 3rd quarter (p < .05). The means of three motivation subscale scores for females were signi?cantly higher than that for males (task, effort, and praise, p < .05) while the mean competition score for males was signi?cantly higher than that for females (p < .01). The linear analysis demonstrated a weak but statistically significant correlation of task (r = .11, p < .05) and effort (r = .13, p < .05) with academic performance indicating that task and effort were minor predictors of academic outcome (p < .05).There was a weak, but statistically significant positive correlation between the three motivation subscales and academic performance. Female students scored significantly higher on three motivation subscales while males scored higher on one.

Abstract Introduction Studies have shown that sleep affects physical performance and certain aspects of motivation in general. Even though it is well known that adolescents are generally sleep deprived, very few studies have investigated the impact of sleep on the inactivity of teens. The aim of this study was to determine the association between sleep and sport motivation in teenagers. Methods 176 young, physically active participants (10-18y; 86 male) completed an online survey comprised of questions extracted from the Adolescents Sleep Habits Survey, the Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale, the Morningness Eveningness Questionnaire, and the Sports Motivation Scale-28. The self-determination theory of motivation was used to determine the different types of motivation, from the most autonomous motivation (intrinsic motivation) to the least autonomous (extrinsic motivation-externally regulated). Amotivation represent an absence of motivation. Pearson correlations were computed between the sleep variables (sleep habits, daytime sleepiness, chronotype score) and the motivation variables (different types of motivation, and amotivation scores). Results Results show that amotivation is significantly associated with daytime sleepiness (r=.16, p =.03). The external regulated form of extrinsic motivation score is significantly associated with daytime sleepiness (r=.157, p=.037), chronotype score (r=-.164, p=.03), and bedtimes on weekends (r=.156, p=.042). The intrinsic motivation score is significantly associated with wake times on weekdays (r=-189, p=.012). Conclusion These results suggest that eveningness, higher daytime sleepiness, and later bedtimes on weekends are associated with amotivation and external regulation of sport motivation. Research has shown that teens who present those two characteristics are more likely to drop out of sports teams or leagues. This could have important implications when addressing inactivity and sport motivation problems in adolescents. Support N/A

Abstract Background Subjective quality of life (SQoL) is an important outcome domain in patients with early psychosis. In an attempt to better understand and maximize SQoL of early psychosis patients, an increasing number of research has been conducted to investigate factors associated with SQoL. Nonetheless, most previous studies focused on younger patients with early psychosis. In this study, the correlates of SQoL in adult patients who had completed 3-year specialized early intervention service for first-episode psychosis (FEP) in Hong Kong were investigated. Methods In total, one hundred and one Chinese patients aged 26–55 years who completed 3-year specialized early intervention service for psychosis in Hong Kong were recruited. Assessments on illness onset (DUP), clinical (PANSS, BNSS, SUMD), intrinsic motivation (by items in Quality of Life Scale, QLS), functional (SOFAS), antipsychotic-induced parkinsonism features (Simpson-Angus Scale, SAS) were conducted. SQoL was evaluated by Chinese version SF-12 which consist of physical and mental components for analysis. Results Correlation analyses showed that SF12 physical health score was correlated with PANSS depression component (p<0.001), QLS intrinsic motivation score (p=0.001) and SAS score (p<0.05) while SF12 mental health score was correlated with PANSS depression score (p<0.001), QLS intrinsic motivation score (p<0.05) and SAS score (p<0.05). Multiple linear regression analyses further revealed that lower PANSS depression score (p<0.001) and higher intrinsic motivation (measured by QLS, p<0.05) were independently associated with better physical SQoL, while lower PANSS depression score (p<0.001) and lower SAS side-effect score (p<0.05) were independently related to better mental SQoL. Discussion Our results are consistent with the literature which indicates that SQoL is significantly related to depressive symptoms. In addition, patients with higher intrinsic motivation and less antipsychotic-induced extrapyramidal side-effect have better SQoL. Further analysis on the longitudinal data will clarify variables predictive of SQoL at follow-up.
