Study on the Conservation and Restoration of Marine Archaeological Porcelains - A Instructive Case of Traditional Crafts from Yue Kiln

It is generally acknowledged that porcelains, among portable antiquities, boast relatively stable physical and chemical properties. However, marine archaeological porcelains are likely to suffer from deterioration such as salting out, attachment and corrosion due to the complicated burial environments. In the course of conservation and restoration, some natural diseases are easily mistaken for production defects. In order to preserve as much historical information about the antiquities as possible during the clean — up process, we systematically examined traditional porcelain production methods used at the Yue kiln, and conducted further research on typical production flaws that can easily be confused with the natural diseases. Based on these traditional methods and compositional characteristics of porcelains, we provide some guidance on the selection of clean —up methods and repair materials used for porcelains. From the perspective of identifiability and ageing resistance, this paper focuses on discussing the restoration scale of porcelains exhibited in museums. Based on our practical work, we discuss some problems that should be noticed in restoration and also provide an outlook for the future practical work and research.

The History of Salpingoeca rosetta as a Model for Reconstructing Animal Origins

Choanoflagellates, the closest living relatives of animals, have the potential to reveal the genetic and cell biological foundations of complex multicellular development in animals. Here we describe the history of research on the choanoflagellate Salpingoeca rosetta. From its original isolation in 2000 to the establishment of CRISPR-mediated genome editing in 2020, S. rosetta provides an instructive case study in the establishment of a new model organism.

Mimics of malignancy caused by concurrent imperforate hymen and transverse vaginal septum: an instructive case and review of the literature

The coexistence of imperforate hymen and vaginal septum is rare and their ability to mimic malignant manifestations have not been frequently reported. This current case report describes a 13-year-old girl that presented with cyclic abdominal pain for 6 months. She was found to have a huge mass via abdominal plain film X-ray and sonography, with inexplicably high levels of serum carcinoembryonic antigen, cancer antigen (CA)-19-9 and CA-125. Pelvic computed tomography imaging disclosed two huge cystic lesions in the uterine and upper vaginal cavities. Surgical intervention conformed the diagnosis of a concurrent imperforate hymen and transverse vaginal septum, echoing the imaging findings of haematocolpometra. Her tumour marker levels gradually returned to normal after surgery. This rare case of concomitant imperforate hymen and transverse vaginal septum highlights that haematocolpometra, a benign disease that might mimic malignancy, should be taken into consideration in any adolescent females with an abdominal mass and amenorrhoea to ensure an early diagnosis and timely appropriate management.

Hammering home the sickle: an instructive case of endobronchial anaplastic large cell lymphoma

It is extremely unusual for primary pulmonary lymphoma, an uncommon occurrence in any form, to be of T-cell origin and to manifest as an endobronchial lesion. Each of these characteristics is rare individually, so cases that combine them are exceptional. We report a patient in whom primary pulmonary anaplastic large cell lymphoma, a T-cell neoplasm, presented with obstruction of the left upper lobe bronchus, resulting in left upper lobe atelectasis and creating the radiographic luftsichel sign. We briefly discuss anaplastic large cell lymphoma as a whole, place our case in the context of previously published literature on endobronchial anaplastic large cell lymphoma, and review the genesis of the luftsichel sign.

Governance challenges of mobility platforms: the case of Merwede, Utrecht

Background Merwede is an envisioned neighbourhood in Utrecht (the Netherlands) that provides an instructive case to learn about the governance challenges of digital mobility platforms. Unique about Merwede is how the development of a mobility platform is envisioned to be integrated into the development of a new neighbourhood. Methodology This article discusses the case of Merwede and provides insights into its proposed mobility platform and how it is made. It illuminates governance challenges relevant to the design and operation of an unconventional mobility concept by disentangling outstanding practical issues concerning three key governance dimensions—organizational structures, decision-making processes, and instruments. Results The research provides an empirical illustration of governance questions that come up when mobility becomes a service and is integrated into the urban fabric from the very beginning of a development process. Already in the plan development stage, Merwede illustrates that difficult decisions are to be made and competing interests come to the fore.

Reception, translation and cultural context

Summary The initiatives to publish an English translation of the influential Sémantique structurale (1966) by linguist and semiotician A. J. Greimas (1917–1992) provide an instructive case study for the reception of a work in new contexts. The efforts underscore the importance of (dis)connections between cultures’ intellectual traditions and trends, putting in play the relations between continental and American linguistic structuralism, generative semantics, cognitive linguistics, and “French” (post)structuralism throughout the human sciences. The projects also point up the significance of timing and of standards for translation quality – and the possibilities for controversy. In addition to published research, this study draws from archival documents and personal communications with Greimas, his translators and editors, and other principals involved.

State of normality: Transnational migrants’ shifting views of state institutions and their obligations

The power of nationalism is evident in how people perceive the world around them as ‘normal’. A national normality is constituted through education and media but also in everyday encounters with the state or state-regulated institutions in the fields of education, welfare provisions, medical care, finance and others. When people migrate between countries, their sense of ‘normality’ can become disturbed. Migration might impact how people think of their relationship to the state and its institutions. This article is based on analysis of 120 interviews with Polish migrants in the UK and Germany. It asks if migration creates a ‘post-national situation’ in which national categories are questioned and negotiated anew. The contexts of Poland, which is undergoing a return to conservative national identity, the UK and its struggle over Brexit, and Germany in its claim to European leadership, provide an instructive case for the discussion of intersections between nationalism and post-nationalism.

Melanoma is the most aggressive form of skin cancer affecting patients worldwide and has the potential to metastasize to virtually any organ in the body. Early detection is of paramount importance to minimize patient morbidity and mortality. However, there has been increasing evidence highlighting that geographical and ethnic variations in the clinical presentation of melanoma do exist. Unlike the Western population, the major subtype of melanoma affecting the Asian population is in fact, acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) and not superficial spreading melanoma (SSM).We hereby present a case of left hallux subungual melanoma with scalp metastasis. This case underscores the importance of the examination of acral skin and the nail apparatus for melanoma in Asians.
