Abstract The fixed-wall rectangular cavity flow problem is a classic problem that has been studied since the beginning of computational fluid mechanics. The present work aims to provide a numerical and computational solution of the Navier-Stokes equations using the finite difference method, applied to model the problem of a magnetorheological fluid in a rectangular cavity with a fixed wall in shock absorbers devices, used in civil structures that use energy dissipators.

Abstract A standard procedure for characterizing the high-purity germanium detector (HPGe), manufactured by Canberra Industries Inc [1], is performed directly by the company using patented methods. However, the procedure is usually expensive and must be repeated because the characteristics of the HPGe crystal change over time. In this work, the principles of a technique are developed for use in obtaining and optimizing the detector characteristics based on a cost-effective procedure in a standard research laboratory. The technique requires that the detector geometric parameters are determined with maximum accuracy by the Monte Carlo method [2] in parallel with the optimization based on evolutionary algorithms. The development of this approach facilitates modeling of the HPGe detector as a standardized procedure. The results will be also beneficial in the development of gamma spectrometers and/or their calibrations before routine measurements.

Abstract Investigation results of changes in the surface structure and helium accumulation in steel Cr18Ni10Ti at various saturation methods are presented. It is shown that different methods of helium introduction can lead to both different and identical changes in the structure and to forms of helium accumulation.

Abstract Graphene, as a successfully industrialized two-dimensional material, has greatly promoted the development of other two-dimensional materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDs). 1T-TaS2 is a classical TMDs material, which presents metallicity at high temperature. It undergoes a variety of charge density wave (CDW) phase transitions during the temperature declining process, and presents insulating properties at low temperature. During the temperature rise period, 1T-TaS2 goes through a phase transition, from an energy band insulator to Mott insulator, followed by an insulation-metal phase transition. The complexity of 1T-TaS2 phase diagram encourages researchers to conduct extensive research on it. This paper, via means of resistance, magnetic susceptibility and other technical methods, finds out that the ultra-low temperature of 1T-TaS2 suggests additional complexity. In addition, with the angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) technique of in-situ alkali metal evaporation, this paper proposes that the 1T-TaS2 ultra-low temperature ground state may exist a combination of state and surface state. Our findings provide more experimental evidence for the physical mechanism of this system.

Abstract The paper presents a description of the design of a new working section cooled by a dispersed coolant flow for a stand with induction heating. The choice of the material of the working area and the method of spraying has been substantiated. The first commissioning experiments were carried out in a stationary cooling mode, with the parameters of the coolant p = 1.7 · 105 Pa, G = 3.8 · 10-3 kg/s.

Abstract The paper showcases the system used for automating agriculture using wireless sensor network (WSN) and weather prediction. WSN, is more efficient than IoT as it avoids connecting all the sensor nodes directly to Internet, thus reducing the traffic over Internet and energy consumption of the sensor network. The system consists of a clustered tree topology to increase the range of operation, connectivity and easily connect new nodes dynamically. The sensor nodes being the leaves, local gateways being the branches and the global gateway being the root node. The system is implemented using cost effective micro-controllers, robust communication modules and reliable data showcasing platforms. Our implementation uses weather prediction to minimize the water needed for irrigation. Thereby minimizing cost and increasing efficient usage of resources.

Abstract An energy-efficient flat surface is formed when applying single-row cross-flow zigzag grooves (VVVVVV) in a dense arrangement. Convective heat transfer is considered in turbulent flow around a longitudinal fragment of a plate with a length of 40 and a width of 4 with a package of 14 singlerow inclined backslash(\)-shaped grooves with symmetry conditions at the lateral boundaries. The width of the grooves is 1, the depth is 0.25, the edge rounding radius is 0.2, the angles of inclination are 30°, 45°, 50° and 60°, the pitch is 2.4, the Reynolds number is 104, and the thickness of the incoming boundary layer is 0.175. The phenomenon of anomalous enhancement of the separation flow and heat transfer in zigzag grooves and acceleration of the wall flow discovered in inclined oval-trench dimples has been confirmed.

Abstract Bridges represent an important application of physics capable of solving real transportation problems. Knowledge of convenience of different mechanical solutions when analyzing and designing bridge is needed. For these reasons, this work is focused on the study of convenience of using two types of bridges. Simply supported short-medium span bridges (30 m to 45 m) are usually excessively long when choosing reinforced concrete solutions and usually short for other types of structures such as cable-stayed or cantilever bridges. The suitability of simply supported bridges leads to the need of studying their cost benefit ratios. This work studies the cost benefit ratio for post-tensioned concrete beams and structural steel girders in simply supported straight bridges. Eight models built of type I sections were used in both cases to analyze the bridges using a software based on the stiffness method. Span of each bridge was set to 30 m, 35 m, 40 m, and 45 m. The convenience of each type of bridge was done comparing the total and the cost per linear meter of each solution (post-tensioned and structural steel). Comparison was done using material consumption, labor, and construction processes costs only. Also, allowable vertical displacement given by current bridge design standards was verified.

Abstract The angular response setup of PMOD/WRC was modified to facilitate measurements of the narrow field of view of radiometers for direct solar irradiance. First, The pointing of the JTSIM-DARA radiometer was measured four times during its construction in the optic laboratory of PMOD/WRC. The final offset of the pointing before shipping relative to the optical axis, defined by a removable alignment cube, is 1.07° / 0.67° (β/γ-axis) for the four-quadrant sensor and 0.095°/-0.017° for the radiometer cavity A. Next to JTSIM-DARA the DARA for the occulter of the satellite Proba-3 was characterised at PMOD/WRC. First tests of the pointing have been carried out and the final pointing characterization will be carried out in summer 2021. Finally, the angular response setup was also used the angular responsivity of solar direct irradiance filter radiometers. The first test was carried out using Precision Filter Radiometer (PFR) F-064.

Abstract We report on the characterization of the angular-dependent emission of two different single-photon emitters based on nitrogen-vacancy centers in nanodiamond and on core-shell CdSe/CdS quantum dot nanoparticles. The emitters were characterized in a confocal microscope setup by spectroscopy and Hanbury-Brown and Twiss interferometry. The angular-dependent emission is measured using a back focal plane imaging technique. A theoretical model of the angular emission patterns of the 2D dipoles of the emitters is developed to determine their orientation. Experiment and model agree well with each other.
