Application of Math-Based Marketing and Financial Tools in an Automated Parametric Design Framework

A suite of math-based marketing and financial tools has been deployed and exercised within an automated, multidisciplinary parametric design framework. This suite of tools includes a market share estimator based on Cook’s S-Model, a Technical Cost Model for estimating the variable and fixed costs of the vehicle’s body system, a database of cost estimates for other vehicle systems, and a profit estimator developed from a standard accounting template. Development of the S-Model market share estimator included completion of a Demand-Price analysis for the midsize sedan segment and collection of publicly available value curves predominantly covering the powertrain performance and interior roominess disciplines. A flexible input-output interface was developed for the Technical Cost Model to provide a means of propagating changes in body design parameters throughout the framework. A series of exercises including analysis of a baseline vehicle, optimization of a hypothetical vehicle concept for net income, and a hypothetical architectural parameter study were conducted to demonstrate the capabilities of a multidisciplinary parametric design framework enabled with marketing and financial tools. These exercises demonstrate that existing engineering and business discipline tools can effectively interoperate to design for profitability in a multidisciplinary parametric design environment. They also illustrate several key challenges in automated design for profitability, such as those encountered in defining the role of price as a design variable in a tightly coupled design-for-profit system and in generating cost estimates using a continuously variable design representation.

Abstract When considering digital displacement machines, one of the key elements are the fast switching valves. However, the dynamic requirements and conflicting design objectives mean that designing these fast-switching valves is a complex process, which pushes the technology to the limit. Optimization approaches are therefore required just to find feasible and, secondly, optimal solutions. However, dynamic CFD simulation is required to accurately describe dynamic fluid effects as fluid stiction, -drag and -end damping. This limits the possibilities to use optimization approaches due to the computational burden imposed, the need for dynamic mesh generation, and the design parameterization. Hence, this paper investigates analytical approximations and the error size introduced by simplifying dynamic fluid friction effects into a lumped parameter form. Specifically, the article presents a comprehensive parameter study of selected design parameters’ influence on the fluid forces in fast switching annulus valves, based on both analytical expressions and results derived from dynamic CFD simulations. The focus is primarily on describing the effects and size of the flow forces resulting from changes in parametric design parameters that influence the flow geometry. The results reveal a fair correlation between the fluid force predicted by the rapidly executable lumped model and the CFD model.

The present work focuses on the aerodynamic problems resulting from a high-speed train (HST) passing through a tunnel. Numerical simulations were employed to obtain the numerical results, and they were verified by a moving-model test. Two responses, [Formula: see text] (coefficient of the peak-to-peak pressure of a single fluctuation) and[Formula: see text] (pressure value of micro-pressure wave), were studied with regard to the three building parameters of the portal-hat buffer structure of the tunnel entrance and exit. The MOPSO (multi-objective particle swarm optimization) method was employed to solve the optimization problem in order to find the minimum [Formula: see text] and[Formula: see text]. Results showed that the effects of the three design parameters on [Formula: see text] were not monotonous, and the influences of[Formula: see text] (the oblique angle of the portal) and [Formula: see text] (the height of the hat structure) were more significant than that of[Formula: see text] (the angle between the vertical line of the portal and the hat). Monotonically decreasing responses were found in [Formula: see text] for [Formula: see text] and[Formula: see text]. The Pareto front of [Formula: see text] and[Formula: see text]was obtained. The ideal single-objective optimums for each response located at the ends of the Pareto front had values of 1.0560 for [Formula: see text] and 101.8 Pa for[Formula: see text].

With the increasing of the aging of population all over the world, and With the inconvenience coming from diseases and damage, there will be more and more people using the wheelchair as a tool for transport. When it cant be short of the wheelchair in the daily life, the addition of the function will bring the elevation of the quality of life for the unfortunate. Staring with this purpose, the research designs a pickup with planetary bevel gear for the wheelchair. After determining the basic function of the wheelchair aids, the study determines the design parameters by using the knowledge of parametric design and completes the model for the system with Pro/E, on the other hand, it completes key components optimization analysis which is based on genetic algorithm optimization.

We developed a shape-design optimization method for the thermo-elastoplasticity problems that are applicable to the welding or thermal deformation of hull structures. The point is to determine the shape-design parameters such that the deformed shape after welding fits very well to a desired design. The geometric parameters of curved surfaces are selected as the design parameters. The shell finite elements, forward finite difference sensitivity, modified method of feasible direction algorithm and a programming language ANSYS Parametric Design Language in the established code ANSYS are employed in the shape optimization. The objective function is the weighted summation of differences between the deformed and the target geometries. The proposed method is effective even though new design variables are added to the design space during the optimization process since the multiple steps of design optimization are used during the whole optimization process. To obtain the better optimal design, the weights are determined for the next design optimization, based on the previous optimal results. Numerical examples demonstrate that the localized severe deviations from the target design are effectively prevented in the optimal design.

A framework IPD (Iterative Parametric Design) is proposed to assist the iterative parametric mechanical design process. To effectively find a set of satisfiable values for the design parameters the key is to find good heuristics to adjust or tune the parametric values resulting from previous design iterations. We propose that heuristics can come from two aspects by both qualitative and quantitative reasoning. Qualitative reasoning, based on confluences, provides global control over the feasible directions of variable adjustments, while quantitative reasoning, based on the dependency network and perturbation analysis, can be used to propose actual quantity of local variable adjustments. We used the design of a helical compression spring as an example to illustrate the performance of IPD system. We show that IPD can often find a solution faster than those without guidance of qualitative and quantitative reasoning.

Analytical expressions of the bifurcation boundaries exhibited by turret mooring systems (TMS), and expressions that define the morphogeneses occurring across boundaries are developed. These expressions provide the necessary means for evaluating the stability of a TMS around an equilibrium position, and constructing catastrophe sets in two or three-dimensional parametric design spaces. Sensitivity analyses of the bifurcation boundaries define the effect of any parameter or group of parameters on the dynamical behavior of the system. These expressions allow the designer to select appropriate values for TMS design parameters without resorting to trial and error. A four-line TMS is used to demonstrate this design methodology. The mathematical model consists of the nonlinear, fifth-order, low-speed, large-drift maneuvering equations. Mooring lines are modeled with submerged catenaries, and include nonlinear drag. External excitation consists of time-independent current, wind, and mean wave drift.

Axial piston pumps of swash-plate type are extensively used in off-highway machines to convert rotating mechanical power into hydraulic power. Efficiency of such pumps is of considerable importance to hydraulic design engineers. Many researchers have tried to create mathematical models for describing pump efficiency. These models are typically a system of nonlinear algebraic equations dependent upon a total of four variables (pressure, speed, temperature, displacement) and a set of experimentally determined coefficients. Since these models are not of the a-priori type, they are not of much value to a design engineer who is trying to design an efficient pump. Others have tried to use physics based models and numerical programs to accurately predict the influence of component design on efficiency. Such programs are considerably slow to run and of not much use to a design engineer who needs to make quick decisions. Hence the objective of this paper is to understand the sensitivity of various design parameters on the total efficiency of the pump by conducting a dimensionless parameter study of a large set of pump design parameters. Using this method it will be shown that a small group of design parameters have the highest influence on the efficiency of these pumps.

Many hydro power plants, both in small and large scales, are being constructed in Turkey. The total potential of these projects reach to 216 billion kWh of feasible energy. However a method was not yet developed for the design of hydraulic machinery equipment in Turkey. In order to accomplish the hydraulic turbine design without any prior information than the design parameters of the hydraulic project, a methodology is developed. This methodology involves the use of computational tools and it is applied for small hydro projects. This methodology is a parametric design-optimization procedure which consists of parametric geometry modeling, computational fluid dynamics analysis and structural verification.

The present paper describes the parametric design of a mixed-flow water-jet pump. The pump impeller and diffuser geometries were parameterized by means of an inverse design method, while CFD analyses were performed to assess the hydrodynamic and suction performance of the different design configurations that were investigated. An initial pump design was first generated and used as baseline for the parametric study. The effect of several design parameters was then analyzed in order to determine their effect on the pump performance. The use of a blade parameterization, based on inverse design, led to a major advantage in this study, because the three-dimensional blade shape is described by means of hydrodynamic parameters, such as blade loading, which has a direct impact on the hydrodynamic flow field. On the basis of this study, an optimal configuration was designed with the aim of maximizing the pump suction performance, while at the same time, guaranteeing a high level of hydrodynamic efficiency, together with the required mechanical and vibrational constraints. The final design was experimentally tested, and the good agreement between numerical predictions and experimental results validated the design process. This paper highlights the contrasting requirements in the pump design in order to achieve high hydrodynamic efficiency or good cavitation performance. The parametric study allowed us to determine design guidelines in order to find the optimal compromise in the pump design, in cases where both a high level of efficiency and suction performance must simultaneously be achieved. The design know-how developed in this study is based on flow field analyses and on hydrodynamic design parameters. It has therefore a general validity and can be used for similar design applications.

Purpose Major changes of an aircraft configuration are conducted during the early design stage. It is important to include the airworthiness regulations at this stage while there is extensive freedom for designing. The purpose of this paper is to introduce an efficient design framework that integrates airworthiness guidelines and documentation at the early design stage. Design/methodology/approach A new design and optimization process is proposed that logically includes the airworthiness regulations as design parameters and constraints by constructing a certification database. The design framework comprises requirements analysis, preliminary sizing, conceptual design synthesis and loads analysis. A design certification relation table (DCRT) describes the legal regulations in terms of parameters and values suitable for use in design optimization. Findings The developed framework has been validated and demonstrated for the design of a Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) 23 four-seater small aircraft. The validation results show an acceptable level of accuracy to be applied during the early design stage. The total mass minimization problem has been successfully solved while satisfying all the design requirements and certification constraints specified in the DCRT. Moreover, successful compliance with FAR 23 subpart C is demonstrated. The proposed method is a useful tool for design optimization and compliance verifications during the early stages of aircraft development. Practical implications The new certification database proposed in this research makes it simpler for engineers to access a large amount of legal documentation related to airworthiness regulations and provides a link between the regulation text and actual design parameters and their bounds. Originality/value The proposed design optimization framework integrates the certification database that is built of several types of legal documents such as regulations, advisory circulars and standards. The Engineering Requirements and Guide summarizes all the documents and design requirements into a single document. The DCRT is created as a summary table that indicates the design parameters affected by a given regulation(s), the design stage at which the parameter can be evaluated and its value bounds. The introduction of the certification database into the design optimization framework significantly reduces the engineer’s load related for airworthiness regulations.
