At present the development of critical thinking is crucial for individuals who are eager to get involved into productive interaction with the outside world, who are able to assess their own achievements objectively throughout the learning process, to analyze ways resulting in successes or fails, set purposes for self-improvement and self-development. There is a growing literature in medical education suggesting that reflection improves learning and performance in essential competencies to a growing literature in medical education suggesting that reflection improves learning and performance in essential competencies. Therefore fostering students’ reflective thinking is an important component of the educational process. The purpose of this study is to provide the grounds for organizing reflective activities for the future healthcare professionals in the context of their professional training. The experiment included 90 second-year students of Dentistry Faculty divided into two groups: test group involved 50 respondents and control group comprised 40 students. The method of studying reflexive abilities was based on applying teachers’ assessment and students’ self-assessment of students’ educational and cognitive activities including the following structural components: awareness of the learning outcomes and whether the outcomes are consisted with intended goals, self-analysis and self-assessment of individual activities and activities during team working. Each component was evaluated by five-score scale. Teachers also used the method of reflexive polylogue. The probability of the difference between the groups was determined by Student's t test. Designing of effective reflection requires time, effort and willingness; such activity should not feel like busy work or an add-on activity. The article elucidates the ways and principles of organization of reflective activity for future doctors. We offered some types of exercises aimed at developing the reflective skills for further professional work. We also detailed methodological recommendations and technoques on the organization of reflective activity for the dental students. The study has demonstrated that the highest level of reflexive skills in students corresponded to 3.4±0.7 scores that are quit sufficient for productive learning. It is through reflection the methods and results of own learning outomes are analyzed and assessed. Reflection is a skill, which requires development and can be applied broadly in medical education.

The aims of this study were to develop and validate an instrument to quantitatively assess the handedness of basketballers in basketball tasks (Basketball Handedness Inventory, BaHI) and to compare it with their handedness in daily activities by the Edinburgh Handedness Inventory (EHI). The participants were 111 basketballers and 40 controls. All subjects completed the EHI and only basketballers filled in the BaHI. To validate the BaHI, a voluntary subsample of basketballers repeated the BaHI. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported a two-factor model. Our results show that: (i) Handedness score (R) in daily actions did not differ between basketball players (R by EHI = 69.3 ± 44.6) and the control group (R by EHI = 64.5 ± 58.6); (ii) basketballers more frequently favored performing certain sport tasks with the left hand or mixed hands (as highlighted by R by BaHI = 50.1 ± 47.1), although their choice was primarily the right hand in everyday gestures; and (iii) this preference was especially true for athletes at the highest levels of performance (R by BaHI of A1 league = 38.6 ± 58.3) and for those playing in selected roles (point guard’s R = 29.4 ± 67.4). Our findings suggest that professional training induces handedness changes in basketball tasks. The BaHI provides a valid and reliable measure of the skilled hand in basketball. This will allow coaches to assess mastery of the ball according to the hand used by the athlete in the different tasks and roles.

Responding to identified shortcomings is components of the internal quality assurance system of a higher education institution. A study of the educational activities of future teachers-engineers of computer profile found that most students are not going to devote their career to teaching, thus preferring engineering. Undoubt- edly, higher education institutions must respond to the requests of stakeholders, especially those seeking higher education. On the other hand, there are requests from employers (educational institutions) for teachers-engineers of computer profile. Therefore, further research was aimed at enhancing cognitive activity primarily by increasing motivation for pedagogical activity. Methods: pedagogical experiment. Results. An experimental test of the effectiveness of pedagogical conditions for intensifying the educational activities of future teachers-engineers of computer profile in professional training. Originality. The results of the study testify to the effec- tiveness of certain pedagogical conditions for intensifying the educational activities of future teachers-engineers of computer profile: changes of external motivation to internal will take place if the information and communication technologies are introduced into educational process of studying peda- gogical disciplines; change of position in the educational activity of future teachers-engineers of computer profile in the study of pedagogical disciplines will take place under the condition that students apply a project approach to the organization of their own educational activity; intensification of educational activity due to its correc- tion in future teachers-engineers of computer profile in the process of operative feedback at each stage of educational activity. Comparative analysis of experimental data shows an increase in the percentage of students of the experimental group compared to the control group with a high level of educational activities of future teachers-engineers of com- puter profile in the study of pedagogical disciplines for a stable active position of educational activity – by 34%, internal motivation to study – by 32%, by the ability to plan and organize their own educational trajectory – by 32%, by academic performance – by 25%). When comparing the results before and after the ex- periment: in the control group the empirical values of the criterion χ2 are less than critical, the characteristics of the compared groups coincide at the level of significance of 0.05; in experimental group the empirical values of the criterion χ2 are greater than the critical one, the signifi- cance of the difference in the characteristics of the com- pared groups is 95%.

The purpose of the study is to test the effectiveness of visualization of learning and memorization in the educational process in higher educational institutions. The research was carried out in higher educational institution in the Russian Federation among 1-4-year students as well as teachers. The sample included 200 students and 35 teachers. The experiment consisted of three stages - introductory, experimental, and final. The initial assessment of students’ professional knowledge was carried out at the introductory stage. The goal of the experimental stage was to introduce visualization of learning and memorization, mainly, the use of mind maps and charts in students’ professional training. Tasks were developed and used, providing for the creation of mini projects, construction layouts with charts, mental maps (reflecting the professional role of a specialist in construction and architecture fields), features and stages of design, priorities of architectural and construction activities. At the final stage, the final assessment of students’ progress in vocational training and a comparative analysis of the data were carried out, conclusions were drawn about the advisability of visualizing the processes of learning and memorizing in higher education. Teachers’ attitude towards the active implementation of visualization of learning and memorizing was also studied at the introductory and final stages. To determine teachers’ attitude towards the active implementation of visualization of learning and memorizing, the survey was conducted. The introduction of the above-mentioned tasks gave the following results in the experimental group. Namely, there were high growth rates of students with a high level of knowledge (11.5%), 16.4% - with a sufficient level of knowledge and 13.7% - with an average level of knowledge; there was also a decrease in the number of students with low grades (by 16.6%) compared to the control group at the final stage. The number of teachers with positive-promising and positive attitude towards visualization of learning and memorizing increased by 14.3%, the number of respondents with positive-neutral attitude decreased by the same percentage, and there was not a single teacher who retained a negative attitude. The practical value of the results lies in the possibility of using the questionnaire and tasks developed in the real educational process of modern higher education institutions.

The growing demands on the modern teacher dictate that at the stage of professional training, students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the pedagogical reality and form the necessary professional competencies in it. Such immersion will not only improve the quality of teacher training, but also make changes in the “traditional” university education, provide the necessary practice-oriented professional education. The purpose of the article is to identify changes in the formation of professional competencies of students participating in the project “Family Tutor”. Changes were identified during the survey, self-assessment and interviewing of students. The material of the study was the data of the project “Family Tutor”, supported by the Timchenko Foundation and implemented during 2019–2021 on the basis of the Glazov State Pedagogical Institute named after V. G. Korolenko. In the course of the study, using a self-assessment sheet and a questionnaire, an increase in the level of formation of professional competencies of students-tutors was revealed. To determine the growth factors, the students were interviewed. It showed that the growth of professional competencies is mainly determined by: regular communication with the child and with parents, project participants; participation in diagnostic activities to identify personal problems of the child; implementation of a comprehensive analysis of factors, including those related to psychological health, leading to the appearance of risks, in the relationship of the teacher, child, family, etc. Based on the identified factors, adjustments were made to the “traditional” educational process. The study showed that the participation of students in the project contributes to the formation of professional competencies, allows students-tutors to gain professional experience directly in real conditions and, accordingly, to increase the practice-oriented education.

Introduction. Dental education involves teaching and assessing the acquisition of verifiable domains that require superior psychomotor, communication, and cognitive skills. Evolving technologies and methods of assessment could enhance student’s learning environment and improve tutor assessment experience. The aim of this study was to review the current body of research and evaluate the effectiveness of various methods of assessments in improving learning and performance in preclinical and clinical dental practice. Materials and Methods. A search strategy was implemented using electronic search in major databases. The following key terms, clinical skills, preclinical, dental students, and assessment, were included in the search. Two reviewers independently screened all the articles retrieved following very specific inclusion criteria. Results. The initial search generated 5371 articles and 24 articles were selected for review and data extraction. Cohen’s kappa coefficient was used to measure interrater agreement and a score of 94.7% was obtained. Conclusion. Preclinical assessment is an effective tool for promoting skills transfer to clinical phase. Early psychomotor skills assessment is valuable. It allows early intervention in the learning process and assists in effective utilization of learning resources. Technology-enhanced assessment systems allow better patient simulation, enhance learning and self-assessment experiences, and improve performance evaluation. However, these systems serve as an adjunct to conventional assessment methods. Further research should aim at calibrating and integrating these systems to optimize students learning and performance.

In the context of the use of distance learning forms in the existing system of medical education, the authors consider current issues of finding optimal models of training content and organizational forms, methods and tools that facilitate the effectiveness of distance learning for the professional training of modern medical specialists. Based on the analysis of awareness, previous experience and attitudes of students and teachers of the First St. Petersburg State Medical University an anonymous survey of students and clinical residents, as well as teachers, students and teachers working at various departments of medical and dental faculties of the University was conducted with regard to the development and implementation of distance learning technologies in practice. As a result of the study, it was shown that students at both pre- and post-graduate levels have a more accurate understanding of the essence of distance learning system than teachers. Most students believe that the quality of the knowledge they receive is higher in face-to-face teaching, but they also believe that the advantage of distance learning is that there is no time limit on how long they can learn the material, and that they can create flexible schedules. Most teachers believe that the use of distance learning in the medical education system is most effective in training specialists for advanced training and retraining courses, as well as in training clinical residents. As the main conclusion of the article, the authors point out that in modern conditions of digitalization, it is expedient to use information and communication technologies and distance learning in a medical university only in combination with traditional teaching and methodical means and methods of professional training. At the same time, distance learning cannot be an alternative for the traditional form of professional training and retraining of doctors, but information and communication technologies and digital technologies, as well as distance learning should be integrated into the existing educational system of a medical university in the context of its digitalization.
