One of the key components of the designing procedure of a structure of hard anti-wear coatings deposited via Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) is the analysis of the stress and strain distributions in the substrate/coating systems, initiated during the deposition process and by external mechanical loads. Knowledge of residual stress development is crucial due to their significant influence on the mechanical and tribological properties of such layer systems. The main goal of the work is to find the optimal functionally graded material (FGM) coating’s structure, composed of three functional layers: (1) adhesive layer, providing high adhesion of the coating to the substrate, (2) gradient load support and crack deflection layer, improving hardness and enhancing fracture toughness, (3) wear-resistant top layer, reducing wear. In the optimisation procedure of the coating’s structure, seven decision criteria basing on the state of residual stresses and strains in the substrate/coating system were proposed. Using finite element simulations and postulated criteria, the thickness and composition gradients of the transition layer in FGM coating were determined. In order to verify the proposed optimisation procedure, Zr-C coatings with different spatial distribution of carbon concentration were produced by the Reactive Magnetron Sputtering PVD (RMS PVD) method and their anti-wear properties were assessed by scratch test and ball-on-disc tribological test.

The paper deals with evaluation of single and multilayer layer PVD coatings based on Cr and Ti widely used in tool application. Additionally, W and WN based coating which are not so widespread were designed and deposited as functionally graded material. The coatings properties were evaluated from the point of view of hardness and adhesion. The hardness measuring was carried out using nanoindentation method. The scratch test was performed to test adhesion. Moreover, the presence of metallic interlayer in functionally graded materials further increases the coating adhesion by gradually approaching its composition to the substrate. Coatings consisting of W and WN have showed very good adhesion. With regard to the results of the scratch test, the multilayer coatings of CrN, TiN and WN have increased adhesion and can be assumed to have their protective function improved. Results will be appliedin development of functionally graded layers for functionally graded materials.

Laser metal deposition process belongs to the directed energy deposition class of additive manufacturing process that is capable of producing highly complex part directly from the three dimensional (3D) computer aided design file of the component by adding materials layer after layers. Laser metal deposition process is a very important additive manufacturing process and it is the only class of additive manufacturing process that can be used to repair valued component parts which were not repairable in the past. Also because this additive manufacturing process can handle multiple materials simultaneously, it is used to produce part with functionally graded material. Some of the features of the laser metal deposition process are described in this chapter. Some experimental studies on the laser metal deposition of Titanium alloy- composite are also presented.

AbstractThis paper deals with the static response of simply supported functionally graded material (FGM) viscoelastic sandwich plates subjected to transverse uniform loads. The FG sandwich plates are considered to be resting on Pasternak's elastic foundations. The sandwich plate is assumed to consist of a fully elastic core sandwiched by elastic-viscoelastic FGM layers. Material properties are graded according to a power-law variation from the interfaces to the faces of the plate. The equilibrium equations of the FG sandwich plate are given based on a trigonometric shear deformation plate theory. Using Illyushin's method, the governing equations of the viscoelastic sandwich plate can be solved. Parametric study on the bending analysis of FG sandwich plates is being investigated. These parameters include (i) power-law index, (ii) plate aspect ratio, (iii) side-to-thickness ratio, (iv) loading type, (v) foundation stiffnesses, and (vi) time parameter.
