Industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L., Cannabaceae) is an ancient cultivated plant originating from Central Asia and historically has been a multi-use crop valued for its fiber, food, and medicinal uses. Various oriental and Asian cultures kept records of its production and numerous uses. Due to the similarities between industrial hemp (fiber and grain) and the narcotic/medical type of Cannabis, the production of industrial hemp was prohibited in most countries, wiping out centuries of learning and genetic resources. In the past two decades, most countries have legalized industrial hemp production, prompting a significant amount of research on the health benefits of hemp and hemp products. Current research is yet to verify the various health claims of the numerous commercially available hemp products. Hence, this review aims to compile recent advances in the science of industrial hemp, with respect to its use as value-added functional food ingredients/nutraceuticals and health benefits, while also highlighting gaps in our current knowledge and avenues of future research on this high-value multi-use plant for the global food chain.

Background: Decalepis arayalpathra (J. Joseph and V. Chandras.) Venter is used primarily for nutrition besides its therapeutic values. Traditional preparations/formulations from its tuber are used as a vitalizer and blood purifier drink. The folklore medicinal uses cover inflammation, cough, wound healing, antipyretic, and digestive system management. A comprehensive review of the current understanding of the plant is required due to emerging concerns over its safety and efficacy. Objective: The systematic collection of the authentic information from different sources with the critical discussion is summarised in order to address various issues related to botanical identity, therapeutic medicine, nutritional usage, phytochemical, and pharmacological potentials of the D. arayalpathra. Current use of traditional systems of medicine can be used to expand future research opportunities. Materials and Methods: Available scripted information was collected manually, from peered review research papers and international databases viz. Science Direct, Google Scholar, SciFinder, Scopus, etc. The unpublished resources which were not available in database were collected through the classical books of ‘Ayurveda’ and ‘Siddha’ published in regional languages. The information from books, Ph.D. and MSc dissertations, conference papers and government reports were also collected. We thoroughly screened the scripted information of classical books, titles, abstracts, reports, and full-texts of the journals to establish the reliability of the content. Results: Tuber bearing vanilla like signature flavor is due to the presence of 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzaldehyde (HMB). Among five other species, Decalepis arayalpathra (DA) has come under the ‘critically endangered’ category, due to over-exploitation for traditional, therapeutic and cool drink use. The experimental studies proved that it possesses gastro-protective, anti-tumor, and antiinflammatory activities. Some efforts were also made to develop better therapeutics by logical modifications in 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzaldehyde, which is a major secondary metabolite of D. arayalpathra. ‘Amruthapala’ offers the enormous opportunity to develop herbal drink with health benefits like gastro-protective, anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory actions. Results: The plant has the potential to generate the investigational new lead (IND) based on its major secondary metabolite i.e. 2-Hydroxy-4-methoxy-benzaldehyde. The present mini-review summarizes the current knowledge on Decalepis arayalpathra, covering its phytochemical diversity, biological potentials, strategies for its conservation, and intellectual property rights (IPR) status. Date (Phoenix dactylifera L. Arecaceae) fruits and their by-products are rich in nutrients. The health benefits of dates and their incorporation into value-added products have been widely studied. The date-processing industry faces a significant sustainability challenge as more than 10% (w/w) of the production is discarded as waste or by-products. Currently, food scientists are focusing on bakery product fortification with functional food ingredients due to the high demand for nutritious food with more convenience. Utilizing date components in value-added bakery products is a trending research area with increasing attention. Studies where the researchers tried to improve the quality of bakery goods by incorporating date components have shown positive results, with several drawbacks that need attention and further research. The objective of this review is to present a comprehensive overview of the utilization of date components in bakery products and to identify gaps in the current knowledge. This review will help focus further research in the area of valorization of date by-products and thereby contribute to the generation of novel functional bakery products that meet consumer expectations and industry standards, thus generating income for the relevant industry and considerable alleviation of the environmental burden this waste and by-products contribute to. Only a few studies have been focused on utilizing date by-products and their extracts for baked goods, while a research area still remaining under-explored is the effect of incorporation of date components on the shelf life of bakery products.

Over the past six years, both governmental institutions and private enterprise have expressed great interest and activity in the isolation of chemical constituents from the Cannabis sativa plant and synthesis of novel cannabinoid compounds with potential medicinal uses. Evaluation of the safety and antiemetic efficacy of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the primary psychoactive cannabinoid component of marijuana, comprises one of several very active areas of cannabinoid clinical research. The results of clinical studies of the safety and antiemetic efficacy of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in patients receiving cancer chemotherapy are critically evaluated. Deficiencies in current knowledge of the clinical pharmacology of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol are discussed in the context of antiemetic drug evaluation.

In pace with the growing consumer health awareness and technological advances, functional foods incorporated with active ingredients are generating significant attention from researchers and consumers alike. Functional foods enriched with active ingredients provide additional health benefits beyond basic nutritional requirements. Bread has lately been used as a vehicle in the formulation of varying products. For instance, bread containing omega-3 fatty acids, whole grains bread, dietary fiber bread containing inulin, and beta-glucan. The production of functional bread has become a trend. Therefore, this review focused on health properties and potential functional food ingredients such as natural antioxidants in bread.

AbstractObjective: Tourist regions are characterized by a very high complexity and micro-enterprises are the largest group of entities which determine the competitiveness of the destination. However, management of such businesses has a strong specificity. The goal of this paper is to identify the capabilities of managing competitiveness and marketing of this group of entities.Methodology: Literature review, examining and discussing the current knowledge regarding the competitiveness of family tourist micro-enterprises.Findings: On the one hand, small companies have significant limitations compared to larger companies. However, the family nature of the company allows for high flexibility of management. Decisions can usually be made faster and easier, which means that they are able to adapt their offer to the expectations of customers faster and better than large entities. Also, an atmosphere of hospitality and friendship can be easily created. What is more, cooperation with other local entities should result in the ability to offer higher value to consumers.Value Added: Authors, on the bases of literature review have proposed a model that shows relations as an element of building competitiveness of a family tourist micro-enterprises. It appears that these firms have unique opportunities to develop relationships with their customers. Cooperation, quality and communication have been described as key variables responsible for this process, that should result in generating the benefits of re-selecting the services of the company as well as giving them positive recommendations.Recommendations: In the area of family businesses in tourism, there is still lack of empirical studies. That is why, the issues presented in this work should be subjected to empirical verification. Future research should concentrate on the specificity of managing a tourist family micro-enterprise and on possible sources of competitive advantage of a tourist family micro-enterprise in the eyes of customers. Especially, described model should be empirically verified.

Background. Oils of hemp and cotton presently have reduced retail trade offer in Russia, but are widely produced and used. Industrial hemp is still cultivated and processed domestically. In the 1950s, industrial cotton was cultivated on a hundred thousand hectares in the country, and now there are signs of its restored growing. Both crops have the ability to restore the raw material base to produce textile fibers, seed and oil as well as the potential to improve functional food production, because they contain functional food ingredients in their oil capable of reducing human nutrition disorder risks, preventing or restoring nutrient deficiencies, preserving and improving health.Materials and methods. Unsaturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids’ profiles of hempseed (Cannabis sativa L.) and cottonseed (Gossypium hirsutum L., G. herbaceum L., G. barbadense L.) oils were evaluated. Seeds were grown respectively under the conditions of the Russian North-West (hemp) and Adler District, Krasnodar Territory (cotton). The PUFA profile was measured using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry equipment (Agilent 6850, USA). All data were calculated using the UniChrom software.Results and conclusions. The content of the omega-6 linoleic acid in hemp accessions reached 64.2%; omega-3 alpha-linolenic acid, 27.1%; monounsaturated oleic acid, 14.0%. The sum of unsaturated acids was 94.2%; and that of polyunsaturated ones, 87.2%. Compared with hemp oil, cotton oil had a lesser sum of polyunsaturated (maximum 58.0%) acids, while its unsaturated acids were up to 79.0%. Oleic acid was found to reach 22.7% in cottonseed oil. Industrial cultivation of hemp and cotton in Russia need not be limited to textile fiber production, but may serve as a potential base of vegetable oils and food; just because of their PUFA contents, it is promising for the production of functional food ingredients, which have health benefits in reducing the risk of cancer and cardiovascular diseases, lowering the HDL cholesterol levels, and relaxing the smooth muscle cells in arteries, thus increasing the blood flow. Seed cake may be valuable addition to animal feed rations as well. As a result of the evaluations, valuable accessions (cultivars and lines) of hemp and cotton were identified. Although the selected accessions are not the products of previous breeding efforts aimed at the PUFA content improvement, they are promising source materials for the development of new cultivars with seeds enriched with compounds or sets of compounds that provide a beneficial effect on human health when included in the composition of food products (functional food ingredients).

There is increasing interest in the use of marine algae as functional food additives for improving human health. Enteromorpha (Ulva) prolifera (E. prolifera) is a seaweed green alga (Chlorophyta) that contains many bioactive compounds, of which polysaccharide is the main component. With the advancement of technology in the methods of extraction and analysis, recent studies in in vitro and animals model showed that polysaccharides derived from E. prolifera exert various biological activities, such as gut microbiota modulation, immunomodulation, antioxidant, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and hypolipidemic. Research evidence has shown that methods of extraction and molecular modification, such as degradation, carboxymethylation, and sulfonation could alter the biological activities of polysaccharides. Therefore, in this review, we discussed the different extraction techniques, structural-activity relationship, and health benefits of sulfated polysaccharides derived from E. prolifera, and suggested future research avenues. This review helps to advance the extraction techniques and promote the application of marine algae polysaccharides as functional food and therapeutic agent.

Seafood such as fish, shellfish, and squid are a unique source of nutrients. However, many marine processing byproducts, such as viscera, shells, heads, and bones, are discarded, even though they are rich sources of structurally diverse bioactive nitrogenous components. Based on emerging evidence of their potential health benefits, these components show significant promise as functional food ingredients. Fish waste components contain significant levels of high-quality protein, which represents a source for biofunctional peptide mining. The chitin contained in shrimp shells, crab shells, and squid pens may also be of value. The components produced by bioconversion are reported to have antioxidative, antimicrobial, anticancer, antihypertensive, antidiabetic, and anticoagulant activities. This review provides an overview of the extraordinary potential of processing fish and chitin-containing seafood byproducts via chemical procedures, enzymatic and fermentation technologies, and chemical modifications, as well as their applications.
