AbstractContinuous monitoring of blood pressure (BP) is essential for the prediction and the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Cuffless BP methods based on non-invasive sensors integrated into wearable devices can translate blood pulsatile activity into continuous BP data. However, local blood pulsatile sensors from wearable devices suffer from inaccurate pulsatile activity measurement based on superficial capillaries, large form-factor devices and BP variation with sensor location which degrade the accuracy of BP estimation and the device wearability. This study presents a cuffless BP monitoring method based on a novel bio-impedance (Bio-Z) sensor array built in a flexible wristband with small-form factor that provides a robust blood pulsatile sensing and BP estimation without calibration methods for the sensing location. We use a convolutional neural network (CNN) autoencoder that reconstructs an accurate estimate of the arterial pulse signal independent of sensing location from a group of six Bio-Z sensors within the sensor array. We rely on an Adaptive Boosting regression model which maps the features of the estimated arterial pulse signal to systolic and diastolic BP readings. BP was accurately estimated with average error and correlation coefficient of 0.5 ± 5.0 mmHg and 0.80 for diastolic BP, and 0.2 ± 6.5 mmHg and 0.79 for systolic BP, respectively.

AbstractSleep deprivation has been shown to increase pain intensity and decrease pain thresholds in healthy subjects. In chronic pain patients, sleep impairment often worsens the perceived pain intensity. This increased pain perception is the result of altered nociceptive processing. We recently developed a method to quantify and monitor altered nociceptive processing by simultaneous tracking of psychophysical detection thresholds and recording of evoked cortical potentials during intra-epidermal electric stimulation. In this study, we assessed the sensitivity of nociceptive detection thresholds and evoked potentials to altered nociceptive processing after sleep deprivation in an exploratory study with 24 healthy male and 24 healthy female subjects. In each subject, we tracked nociceptive detection thresholds and recorded central evoked potentials in response to 180 single- and 180 double-pulse intra-epidermal electric stimuli. Results showed that the detection thresholds for single- and double-pulse stimuli and the average central evoked potential for single-pulse stimuli were significantly decreased after sleep deprivation. When analyzed separated by sex, these effects were only significant in the male population. Multivariate analysis showed that the decrease of central evoked potential was associated with a decrease of task-related evoked activity. Measurement repetition led to a decrease of the detection threshold to double-pulse stimuli in the mixed and the female population, but did not significantly affect any other outcome measures. These results suggest that simultaneous tracking of psychophysical detection thresholds and evoked potentials is a useful method to observe altered nociceptive processing after sleep deprivation, but is also sensitive to sex differences and measurement repetition.

The dissociation conditions of hydrate in clayey silts are of great significance for its efficient production. In this work, the dissociation conditions of methane hydrate in clayey silt cores were experimentally measured by step-heating method. Various cores including quartz powder, montmorillonite and South China Sea sediments were used for investigation. The results showed that the dissociation temperatures of methane hydrate in clayey silt cores depressed compared to bulk hydrate. In comparison to grain size, salinity and lithology had a more significant influence on the equilibrium temperature depression. A water activity meter was used to measure the water activity in clayey silt cores. The influence of salt and minerals on water activity was investigated. By combining the measured water activity data with the Chen-Guo model, a novel water activity measurement method (WAM) for the hydrate dissociation conditions prediction was proposed. The predicted results are in good agreement with the experimental data.

Leaving a dog home alone is part of everyday life for most dog owners. Previous research shows that dog–owner relationship has multifarious effects on dog behavior. However, little is known about the interplay between dog–owner relationship, physical activity of the dog, and affective experiences at the time of the owner leaving home and reunion when the owner comes home. In this paper, we explored how the general (daily, home alone, and over the 2-week study period) physical activity of the dog, and owner's perceptions of the dog's affective state were correlated at those particular moments. Nineteen volunteer dog owners had their dogs (N = 19) wear two activity trackers (ActiGraph wGT2X-GT and FitBark2) for 2 weeks 24 h/day. Prior to the 2-week continuous physical activity measurement period, the owners filled in questionnaires about the dog–owner relationship and the dog behavior. In daily questionnaires, owners described and assessed their own and their perception of the emotion-related experiences of their dog and behavior of the dog at the moment of separation and reunion. The results indicated that the dog–owner relationship has an interplay with the mean daily and weekly physical activity levels of the dog. An indication of strong emotional dog–owner relationship (especially related to the attentiveness of the dog, continuous companionship, and time spent together when relaxing) correlated positively with the mean daily activity levels of the dog during the first measurement week of the study. Results also suggest that the mean daily and over the 2-week measurement period physical activity of the dog correlated the affective experiences of the dog and owner as reported by the owner when the dog was left home alone. More research is needed to understand the interplay between affect, physical activity of the dog, dog–owner relationship, and the effects of these factors on, and their interplay with, the welfare of dogs.

The management of juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) has improved tremendously in recent years due to the introduction of new drug therapies but remains complex in terms of non-pharmaceutical issues. In order to determine the direction of scientific progress by characterizing the current spectrum of ongoing clinical research in JIA, we analyzed all ongoing studies in the field of JIA—registered in clinicaltrials.gov and clinicaltrialsregister.eu—concerning sponsoring, enrollment, duration, localization, and particularly objectives. The close of the database was 7 January 2021. After identifying double-registered studies, n = 72 went into further analysis. Of these, 61.1% were academia-sponsored and 37.5% were sponsored by the pharma industry. The majority of the studies was of the interventional type (77.8%), while others (22.2%) were observational. The median planned enrollments were 100 participants (interventional studies) and 175 participants (observational studies), respectively. The duration differed remarkably from one month to more than 15 years, with a median of 42.5 months. A total of 61.1% of studies were located in a single country, and 38.9% were in several. Europe and North America clearly dominated the study localizations. The study objectives were DMARDs (56.9%), followed by diagnostics and disease activity measurement (18.1%), and medication other than DMARD (12.5%), besides others. Studies on DMARDs were mainly sponsored by industry, predominantly interventional studies on established and novel biologics, with several on specific issues such as systemic JIA and others. The spectrum of registered studies is currently centered on drug therapy and diagnostics, while other issues in JIA play a subordinated role in current research. Drug development was transferred from adult rheumatology into the JIA population with little innovation for children. Future research should take specific pediatric needs better into account.

All children and youth require ample physical activity (PA), low levels of sedentary behaviour (SB), and adequate sleep to stay healthy. Children and youth living with disabilities (CYWD) tend to have fewer opportunities for participation in PA and outdoor play compared with their typically developing peers. In turn, CYWD are typically less active and more sedentary, on average, compared with their peers. The COVID-19 pandemic reduced opportunities for many children and youth to participate in PA and outdoor play. The purpose of this study was to assess parent-perceived changes in PA (including outdoor play), SB (including screen time), and sleep quality and quantity, due to COVID-19 and related restrictions, in a national cohort of Canadian CYWD. We recruited parents of school-aged CYWD (N = 151) in May 2020. In an online survey, parents reported their child’s previous 7-day PA, SB, and sleep, as well as perceived changes in their child’s movement and play behaviours due to COVID-19 and related restrictions. Parent-perceived parental support for their child’s movement and play behaviours during the pandemic was also assessed. We used descriptive statistics to describe the child’s movement behaviours and assessed the association between movement behaviours and parental factors using Pearson and point-biserial correlations. Few (5.3%) CYWD met PA recommendations and 13.2% met screen time recommendations during the acute period of the COVID-19 pandemic. More CYWD (66.2%) were meeting sleep recommendations. Overall, only 1.3% of CYWD were meeting the combined movement guidelines. Parent encouragement was positively associated with the child’s outdoor PA (0.23), wheeling, walking, and biking (0.19), indoor PA (0.16), and family-based PA (0.26). Parental co-play was similarly positively associated with the child’s outdoor PA (0.26), wheeling, walking, and biking (0.39), indoor PA (0.16), and family-based PA (0.26). Parents perceived their CYWD to be less active and more sedentary as a result of COVID-19 and the related restrictions. Parents of CYWD have an important role in encouraging healthy movement behaviours. Return to movement and play post-COVID guidelines should include tailored strategies for CYWD and their families to mitigate the negative impacts of the pandemic.

Amylase producing actinobacteria were isolated and characterized from terrestrial environment. There are a limited number of reports investigating the marine environment; hence, in the present study, four marine enzymes were tested for their amylase production ability. On starch agar plates, the Streptomyces rochei strain showed a higher hydrolytic zone (24 mm) than the other isolates. Growth under optimized culture conditions using Plackett-Burman’s experimental design led to a 1.7, 9.8, 7.7, and 3.12-fold increase for the isolates S. griseorubens, S. rochei, S. parvus, and Streptomyces sp., respectively, in the specific activity measurement. When applying the Box-Behnken design on S. rochei using the most significant parameters (starch, K2HPO4, pH, and temperature), there was a 12.22-fold increase in the specific activity measurement 7.37 U/mg. The α-amylase was partially purified, and its molecular weight was determined using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. α-Amylase was particularly active at pH 6 and 65°C. The purified enzyme was most active at 65°C and pH 6, thermal stability of 70°C for 40 min, and salt concentration of 1 M with Km and Vmax of 6.58 mg/ml and 21.93 μmol/ml/min, respectively. The α-amylase was improved by adding Cu+2, Zn+2, and Fe+2 (152.21%, 207.24%, and 111.89%). Increased production of α-amylase enzyme by S. rochei KR108310 leads to production of significant industrial products.

The feasibility of correct NaI gamma-spectrometry activity measurement for each nuclide in 131I, 132I, 133I, 134I, 135I, 133Xe, 135mXe, 135Xe and 222Rn composition is presented. To get this result the special matrix method M3 and SAS Na M3 software were used for spectra processing. SAS Na M3 software was developed for complex NaI gamma-spectra processing. Special algorithms and auxiliary software are used to overcome the problems of the classic spectra processing matrix method. Being used for spectrum processing SAS Na M3 software determines the nuclide composition of the sample, activity of nuclides identified and activities uncertainties. The activity values estimation is made for nuclides not identified in the sample measured but included in SAS Na M3 software nuclides library. The values of minimal detectable activities for NaI ∅3''× 3'' gamma-spectrometer and 1 hour measuring time are ~ 0.6 Bq for 131I, 132I, 133I, 134I and ~ 2 Bq for 135I.

Abstract The research aimed to evaluate total phenolic content extracted from onion (Allium cepa L.) peels and some of the extract biological activities. The potential of the extract for preserving fish was also investigated. Onion peel extracted with EtOH 60% at 60°C (60 minutes, solid/liquid ratio 1g/20ml) yielded highest polyphenol content 168.49 ± 0.02 GAE/g DW and flavonoid content (216.43 ± 0.06 mg QE/g DW). The extract showed potent antioxidant property in DPPH radical scavenging assay with IC50 value of 12.48 ± 0.45 μ/mL and good antibacterial activity against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, Pseudomonas aeruginosa with MIC values of 175; 175: 200; 200: 150 (μ/mL) respectively. The extract also displayed alpha-glucosidase inhibition activity with IC50 value of 142.53 μg/mL and negligible tyrosinase inhibition activity. Measurement of the PV, TBARS values of basa catfish fillets coated with the extract solution at different concentrations, it was observed that fish samples treated with 3% extract solution could greatly reduce the lipid oxidation under 4°C and -18°C storage conditions compared with untreated samples. The PV, TBARS values after 4 weeks were comparable to 200ppm BHT treated samples.
