BACKGROUND: Ultra-limited-angle image reconstruction problem with a limited-angle scanning range less than or equal to π 2 is severely ill-posed. Due to the considerably large condition number of a linear system for image reconstruction, it is extremely challenging to generate a valid reconstructed image by traditional iterative reconstruction algorithms. OBJECTIVE: To develop and test a valid ultra-limited-angle CT image reconstruction algorithm. METHODS: We propose a new optimized reconstruction model and Reweighted Alternating Edge-preserving Diffusion and Smoothing algorithm in which a reweighted method of improving the condition number is incorporated into the idea of AEDS image reconstruction algorithm. The AEDS algorithm utilizes the property of image sparsity to improve partially the results. In experiments, the different algorithms (the Pre-Landweber, AEDS algorithms and our algorithm) are used to reconstruct the Shepp-Logan phantom from the simulated projection data with noises and the flat object with a large ratio between length and width from the real projection data. PSNR and SSIM are used as the quantitative indices to evaluate quality of reconstructed images. RESULTS: Experiment results showed that for simulated projection data, our algorithm improves PSNR and SSIM from 22.46db to 39.38db and from 0.71 to 0.96, respectively. For real projection data, our algorithm yields the highest PSNR and SSIM of 30.89db and 0.88, which obtains a valid reconstructed result. CONCLUSIONS: Our algorithm successfully combines the merits of several image processing and reconstruction algorithms. Thus, our new algorithm outperforms significantly other two algorithms and is valid for ultra-limited-angle CT image reconstruction.

This study was to analyze the application value of a reconstruction algorithm in CT images of patients with coronary heart disease and analyze the correlation between epicardial fat volume and coronary heart disease. An optimized reconstruction algorithm was constructed based on compressed sensing theory in this study. Then, the optimized algorithm was applied to the image reconstruction of multislice spiral CT image data after testing its sensitivity, accuracy, and specificity. 60 patients with suspected angina pectoris were divided into lesion group (40 cases) and normal group (20 cases) according to whether there were coronary atherosclerotic plaques in cardiac vessels. The results showed that the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the optimized reconstruction algorithm were 91.78%, 84.27%, and 95.32%, and the running time was (12.18 ± 2.49) s. The CT value of the liver and the CT ratio of the liver and spleen in the lesion group were (53.81 ± 5.91) and (3.88 ± 0.67), respectively. There was no significant difference between the two groups ( P > 0.05 ). The body mass index and epicardial fat volume in the lesion group were (31.93 ± 4.54) kg/m2 and (120.09 ± 22.01) cm3, respectively. The body mass index and fat volume in the lesion group were significantly higher than those in the normal group ( P < 0.05 ). The epicardial fat constitution increased with the increase of the number of coronary arteries involved, and there was a positive correlation between them. Among patients with different coronary atherosclerotic plaques, the epicardial fat volume in patients with mixed plaques was the largest ( P < 0.05 ). In summary, optimizing CT images under compressed a sensing reconstruction algorithm could effectively improve the diagnostic accuracy of doctors. Epicardial fat volume was positively correlated with coronary heart disease. Epicardial fat volume could be used as one of the important indexes to predict coronary heart disease.

Deep learning (DL) has become a remarkably powerful tool for image processing recently. However, the usefulness of DL in positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) for breast cancer (BC) has been insufficiently studied. This study investigated whether a DL model using images with multiple degrees of PET maximum-intensity projection (MIP) images contributes to increase diagnostic accuracy for PET/CT image classification in BC. We retrospectively gathered 400 images of 200 BC and 200 non-BC patients for training data. For each image, we obtained PET MIP images with four different degrees (0°, 30°, 60°, 90°) and made two DL models using Xception. One DL model diagnosed BC with only 0-degree MIP and the other used four different degrees. After training phases, our DL models analyzed test data including 50 BC and 50 non-BC patients. Five radiologists interpreted these test data. Sensitivity, specificity, and area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) were calculated. Our 4-degree model, 0-degree model, and radiologists had a sensitivity of 96%, 82%, and 80–98% and a specificity of 80%, 88%, and 76–92%, respectively. Our 4-degree model had equal or better diagnostic performance compared with that of the radiologists (AUC = 0.936 and 0.872–0.967, p = 0.036–0.405). A DL model similar to our 4-degree model may lead to help radiologists in their diagnostic work in the future.

Open door laminoplasty using plates is a safe and effective procedure for multi-level cord compression. To achieve stable laminar arch, various types of plate have been developed and used. Now, we introduce two rare complications related to the laminar shelf of plate. In the first case, we used the wider laminar shelf plate because the elevated lamina did not fit well into the usual laminar shelf. During follow-up, cord compression due to laminar shelf was observed. And in the second case, the laminar shelf of plate did not fit into the elevated lamina, so we inserted it with a little bit of force. But the patient’s symptom was not improved. On CT image, the inner cortical bone of the lamina was fractured. To prevent these complications, surgeons need to consider the thickness of the lamina and the size of the laminar shelf before surgery.
