Parametric computational modeling of galaxies is a process with a high computational cost. The statistical component of modeling, which may involve model refinements in relation to the source brightness distribution, achieves more satisfactory results when the Bayesian approach is employed. In our research, we use GALaxy PHotometric ATtributes (GALPHAT) as our primary tool for data processing. In the current scenario of cosmology, to be scientifically relevant, this type of modeling must be performed on thousands of galaxies. In this article, we present the study and optimization of solutions based on modern HPC platforms, including a many-core processor, that enable effective processing of that amount of galaxies obtained from Sloan Digital Sky Survey.

Specifications concerning road lighting and photometry of road surfaces were established more than 50 years ago. Road lighting design and road marking visibility were developed for vehicle driving. The observation distance defined by standards corresponds to interurban applications; however, within Europe these areas do not tend to be lit. The objective of the SURFACE project is to propose new geometries for the photometric characterisation of pavements, both adapted to different urban travel modes and new lighting technologies. This article reviews the available guidelines, standards, measuring devices and literature regarding geometries and road lighting applications, and presents the project SURFACE analysis and proposal. The SURFACE consortium recommends adding several new angles for different driving conditions and road users; 2.29° for urban environments and consistency with road marking standard, and 1° for extra-urban environment and consistency with previous geometries. A 5° angle, corresponding to 17-m viewing distance, could be an interesting compromise, suitable for urban driving at low speed, cycling and for scooters. The angles of 10° and 20° are under consideration for describing the boundary between diffuse and specular behaviour.

Context. Isolated early-type galaxies are evolving in unusually poor environments for this morphological family, which is typical of cluster inhabitants. We investigate the mechanisms driving the evolution of these galaxies. Aims. Several studies indicate that interactions, accretions, and merging episodes leave their signature on the galaxy structure, from the nucleus down to the faint outskirts. We focus on revealing such signatures, if any, in a sample of isolated early-type galaxies, and we quantitatively revise their galaxy classification. Methods. We observed 20 (out of 104) isolated early-type galaxies, selected from the AMIGA catalog, with the 4KCCD camera at the Vatican Advanced Technology Telescope in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey g and r bands. These are the deepest observations of a sample of isolated early-type galaxies so far: on average, the light profiles reach μg ≈ 28.11 ± 0.70 mag arcsec−2 and μr ≈ 27.36 ± 0.68 mag arcsec−2. The analysis was performed using the AIDA package, providing point spread function-corrected 2D surface photometry up to the galaxy outskirts. The package provides a model of the 2D galaxy light distribution, which after model subtraction enhances the fine and peculiar structures in the residual image of the galaxies. Results. Our re-classification suggests that the sample is composed of bona fide early-type galaxies spanning from ellipticals to late-S0s galaxies. Most of the surface brightness profiles are best fitted with a bulge plus disc model, suggesting the presence of an underlying disc structure. The residuals obtained after the model subtraction show the nearly ubiquitous presence of fine structures, such as shells, stellar fans, rings, and tails. Shell systems are revealed in about 60% of these galaxies. Conclusions. Because interaction, accretion, and merging events are widely interpreted as the origin of the fans, ripples, shells and tails in galaxies, we suggest that most of these isolated early-type galaxies have experienced such events. Because they are isolated (after 2–3 Gyr), these galaxies are the cleanest environment in which to study phenomena connected with events like these.

ABSTRACT We present the first photometric study of the globular cluster system (GCS) of the E galaxy NGC 3613 (MV = −21.5, d ∼ 30.1 Mpc), as well as the surface photometry of the host galaxy, based on Gemini/GMOS images. Being considered the central galaxy of a group, NGC 3613 inhabits a low-density environment although its intrinsic brightness is similar to the expected one for galaxies in the centre of clusters. The following characteristics are obtained for this GCS. The colour distribution is bimodal, with metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) getting slightly bluer with increasing radius. The radial and azimuthal projected distributions show that metal-rich GCs are more concentrated towards the host galaxy and trace its light distribution very precisely, while metal-poor GCs present a more extended and uniform distribution. The GC luminosity function helps validate the adopted distance. The estimated total GC population of Ntot = 2075 ± 130 leads to a specific frequency SN = 5.2 ± 0.7, a value within the expected range for GCSs with host galaxies of similar luminosity. The surface photometry of NGC 3613 reveals a three-component profile and a noticeable substructure. Finally, a small sample of ultracompact dwarf candidates are identified in the surroundings of the host galaxy.

     Lenticular galaxy NGC3 has been chosen to study the surface photometry using griz filter. The data where obtained from the seventh Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release seven (DR7), and main the image reduction was done by the pipeline of SDSS. The work was achieved by the ELLIPS task from the STSDAS ISOPHOTE package in the Image Reduction and Analysis Facility (IRAF).The overall structure of the galaxy (a bulge, a bar, isophotal contour maps, together with a bulge to disk decomposition of the galaxy images where achieved, Also, the photometric properties (the disk position angle, ellipticity, B4 and inclination of the galaxy) where estimated.

AbstractWe present surface photometry and stellar kinematics of NGC 4264, a lenticular galaxy in the region of the Virgo Cluster undergoing a tidal interaction with its neighbour, NGC 4261. We measured the bar radius and strength from SDSS imaging and the bar pattern speed from MUSE integral-field spectroscopy. We find that NGC 4264 hosts a strong and large bar, which is rotating fast. The accurate measurement of the bar rotation rate allows us to exclude that the formation of the bar was triggered by the ongoing interaction.

Two galaxies have been chosen, spiral galaxy NGC 5005 and elliptical galaxy NGC 4278 to study their photometric properties by using surface photometric techniques with griz-Filters. Observations are obtained from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The data reduction of all images have done, like bias and flat field, by SDSS pipeline. The overall structure of the two galaxies (a bulge, a disk), together with isophotal contour maps, surface brightness profiles and a bulge/disk decomposition of the galaxy images were performed, although the disk position angle, ellipticity and inclination of the galaxies have been estimated.
