Abstract Background Desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) is a sporadic, highly malignant tumor with a poor prognosis. The abdomen and pelvis have been reported as the primary localization sites. However, to the best of our knowledge, there are few reports on primary DSRCT in the submandibular gland. Case presentation We report a case of a 26-year-old Chinese man with a mass in the right submandibular gland. Imaging studies showed a hypoechoic mass in the right submandibular region. Intraoperative pathology revealed that the tumor tissue was composed of small round tumor cells and a dense desmoplastic stroma. On immunostaining, the tumor cells showed markers of epithelial, mesenchymal, myogenic, and neural differentiation. The EWSR1 gene rearrangement was detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Based on the overall morphological features and immunohistochemical findings, a final diagnosis of DSRCT was made. The patient was treated with comprehensive anti-tumor therapy mainly based on radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Conclusions DSRCT is an uncommon malignant neoplasm with rare submandibular gland involvement. In this report, we have described a case of DSRCT in the submandibular gland and reviewed the literature on DSRCT over the past 5 years. Considering the importance of differential diagnosis between DSRCT, especially with rare extra-peritoneal involvement, and small round blue cell tumors, a full recognition of the clinicopathological features will help to better diagnose this neoplasm.

Submandibular space infection is a potentially fatal infection that could arise as a result of odontogenic or non-odontogenic infections. The management should be prompt as the infection can spread rapidly leading to airway obstruction. A 5-year-old child reported with a complaint of swelling on the left side of the face for four days. On examination, patient had a diffuse swelling involving the left submandibular region with decreased mouth opening secondary to carious 75. The patient was administered intravenous (i.v) fluids, antibiotics and analgesics. Incision and drainage of the abscess was done extraorally under i.v sedation using midazolam with local anaesthesia followed by rubber drain placement. Patient responded to the treatment with progressive decrease in the swelling. Pulpectomy of 75 was performed followed by stainless-steel crown placement. This case highlights the importance of prompt appropriate treatment supplemented by salvage treatment to overcome the associated morbidity at this very young age.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignant tumor that has been reported in several organs of different dog breeds. An 8-year-old Shih Tzu, an intact male dog, came to an animal clinic in the Thonburi area, Bangkok Province, Thailand, and a mass of 4.5 × 4.5 cm (width × length) by size was found at the submandibular area. Surgical excision to remove the mass and subsequent histological examination identified the mass as SCC. After conducting the surgery and follow-up, the mass was recurrent at the same location after 33 days and a dog died. Therefore, one of the possible reasons for the death of the dog could be SCC metastasis.

ABSTRACT Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is a rare histiocytic disorder commonly manifested as histiocytic proliferation of lymph nodes and extra nodal tissues initially described as a separate entity by Rosai and Dorfman under the term sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy (SHML) in 1969. The treatment strategies can be variable and based on the severity of disease, v ital organ invol vement and pos s ible complications. The first case was a 47 years old female presenting with nasal obstruction and submandibular lymphadenopathy since few days. The second case was a 8 year old girl presented with stridor and lymphadenopathy in the submandibular region. In both the cases spontaneous resolution was expected and intervention was done only if there werecomplications. Patients were followed up every three months for two years and both the cases have resolved completely without any sequelae of the disease. Here we present two cases of Rosai-Dorfman disease presented to our hospital, this case series adds to the growing knowledge of Rosai-Dorfman di sease, along with under s tanding of pathophysiology, clinical diagnosis, treatment strategies and recovery options in cases where complications occurred.

Introduction: Tuberculosis lymphadenitis (or tuberculous adenitis) is the most common type of infection with tuberculosis that occurs outside of the respiratory system. Tuberculosis lymphadenitis is a chronic condition caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the granulomatous inflammation of the lymph node caused by caseated necrosis. The number of people who contact tuberculosis is estimated at 8 million per year, and about 3 million people die from tuberculosis in the world. Presentation of Case: In this case report we delineate the case of a female patient, 26-year-old, she had some pain and lymph node swelling in her right submandibular region since from 4 months and was diagnosed as right Caseating Tuberculous Lymphadenitis, associated with the cervical (neck) region, who was immunocompetent and HIV test negative, with a history of recurring fever, weight loss, loss of appetite for the last 4 months. On physical examination, she had swelling approximately 3×3 cm in the right submandibular region and a hard mass and painful sensation were noticed in her right submandibular region. On Fine needle aspiration cytology of submandibular lymph node reveals Caseating Tuberculous Lymphadenitis. this is extremely rare in immunocompetent individuals.

Background: An epidermoid cyst is a benign cyst derived from the infundibulum or upper portion of a hair follicle, encapsulated in a thin layer of epidermis-like epithelium. They are common ,painless lump can occur anywhere in body and usually do not require treatment, unless a person wants to have them removed due to cosmetic reasons,or if the cysts is infected. Material and method:It is a retrospective record based study, performed in department of Pathology RIMS, Ranchi.Study population included all cases those who came for fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for the swelling over different areas on body, with some common clinical presentations of pain, mild pain or no pain and gradually increasing in size from January 2020-July 2021.Result:A total of 105 cases recorded with FNAC diagnosis of epidermoid cyst of which 62% were male, majority were adults of age group 21-30 years(33.33%) and most common site is submandibular region 19% followed by face 16% and periauricular region 13%.Conclusion: Epidermoid cyst are common in adult males and more frequent on upper trunk.

We report the case of a 6-year-old patient with suspected recurrence of a plunging ranula in clinical and ultrasonographic examination. Surgical resection of the left submandibular and sublingual glands had already been performed. Since persistent glandular tissue could not be excluded with certainty via MRI, we expanded diagnostics by performing a PET/MRI using a head and neck imaging protocol and the radiotracer 18F-PSMA-1007, which is physiologically expressed by salivary gland tissue. The 18F-PSMA-PET/MRI provided evidence of a cystically transformed, diminishing seroma in the left retro-/submandibular region. No 18F-PSMA expressing glandular tissue could be detected in the area of resection, excluding a relapse of a plunging ranula. As a consequence, we opted for a conservative treatment without further surgical intervention. We conclude that a simultaneous 18F-PSMA-PET/MRI is a comprehensive imaging modality, which can help to rule out persistent salivary tissue and recurring plunging ranula. It is a useful tool to facilitate the decision making of surgical interventions.

The present case study reports contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance findings in three patients with histopathologically proven IgG4-related chronic sclerosing sialadenitis of the submandibular gland. All three patients presented with painless swelling of the submandibular region. The contrast-enhanced T1-weighted images showed reticular enhancement of the swollen submandibular gland. Radiological–pathological correlation revealed that the characteristic reticular enhancement corresponded to fibrosis and to inflammatory cell infiltration in the interlobular septa and in the periductal region of the submandibular gland.

Abstract Background Ectopic thyroid is a developmental anomaly of the thyroid gland of embryological origin. Instead of having a pretracheal situation, thyroid tissue is elsewhere, most commonly in the median cervical line along the course of the thyroglossal duct. Lingual thyroid is the most common presentation. Ectopic thyroid tissue in the submandibular region has been rarely reported. Case presentation We report herein a case of a 65-year-old man admitted to our department with a complaint of a painless swelling in the left submandibular region. Conclusions Thyroid gland ectopia should be considered among the differential diagnoses of submandibular swelling. Ectopic thyroid tissue can present with the same pathology affecting the normal thyroid gland such as malignancy and hyperthyroidism.
