Abstract The amount of revenue collected often determines a country's economic growth and development. Taxes continue to be one of the most important constituents in managing nationwide income in emerging and developed nations. In this sense, tax evasion might have serious effects, especially because the global cost of non-compliance by taxpayers is quite significant. Small and medium-sized firms (SMEs) are the backbone of economies around the world, driving economic progress and growth, as well as innovation and wealth creation. The high incidence of tax non-compliance among SMEs, on the other hand, stymies the progress that SMEs are meant to bring to many nations. Thus, the study aim at assessing the effects of taxation on economic development with its moderating role of tax compliance. The descriptive research design with quantitative approach was employed. The population of the study consist is 10,000 SMEs operating in Kumasi currently with a sample size of 400 SMEs. The instrument for data collection in this study was questionnaire. The data that was collected was analysed using SPSS. The findings demonstrated that in formulating strategies to enhance voluntary compliance, it is crucial for the relevant authorities to be aware of, understand and appreciate taxation taxpayers’ compliance behaviour and the need to provide tax education services. The results indicated that tax compliance enhanced the effectiveness of taxation to impact on economic development. The moderating role of tax compliance in the relationship between taxation and economic development was low but positive.

The efficient and effective tax education to SMEs in developing countries like Tanzania is critical to overcome the challenges of tax compliances. Despite the trend of tax reforms in Tanzania since 1998, the effects of tax education on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are still poor and many SMEs still see taxation process and cost as constraints to SMEs’ successes (Adam, 2012; Masanja, 2019). The study employed deductive approach, exploratory and descriptive survey methodology. The respondents involved 96 SMEs owners of Morogoro Municipality and four (4) TRA Education Department employees. The data collection tools involved the use of purposeful distributed questionnaires and interviews. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyze data. The scope was to produce the frequency tables (Kothari, 209; Mbalwowa, 2014). To determine if the provision of tax education has resulted in tax compliance among SMEs, the results shown that to large extent there were high level of incompliancy on: timeliness for tax payment, voluntary tax payment, use of EFDs, issuance of fiscal receipts and online filing of tax returns. Therefore, the main attributing factors of tax incompliancy have been associated with tax education. The study recommends: to evaluate the tax education programs on revenue collection, complements information technology to disseminate tax education, carry out relational or causal studies of tax education on tax compliances across different demographic characteristics in Tanzania. More importantly, to promote a shift from the tax being assessed by TRA to self-tax assessment among SMEs through tax education program.

The level of taxpayer compliance has decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. The Regional Revenue Management Agency recorded that as many as 1.6 million motorized vehicles were in arrears in taxes as of September 2020. This study aims to empirically examine the effect of the tax whitening program, taxpayer awareness, and tax knowledge on taxpayer compliance with tax socialization as a moderating variable in the correlation. The questionnaire uses a Likert scale with 100 motor vehicle taxpayers domiciled in the Cilacap, Banyumas, Purbalingga, Banjarnegara, and Kebumen areas. The research sample was taken using the non-probability sampling technique. The questionnaire data was then processed using Partial Least Square (PLS) analysis by testing the outer and inner models. The results show that tax whitening, taxpayer awareness, and tax knowledge directly impact taxpayer compliance. However, tax socialization does not affect taxpayer compliance. Tax socialization cannot moderate the factors that support taxpayer compliance and does not directly affect taxpayer compliance. This study explains that tax whitening can be used as a solution to improve vehicle tax compliance. Meanwhile, tax awareness and tax knowledge which are internal factors, reflect that taxpayers have good knowledge to be aware of their obligations to pay taxes and comply with existing tax regulations. Tax socialization cannot moderate the factors that support taxpayer compliance and does not directly affect taxpayer compliance. These conditions indicate the government's lack of effort in providing tax information and knowledge to the public. Activities to disseminate information, tax knowledge, and tax education to the public must be carried out intensely and continuously to increase taxpayer compliance.

This research examines the two components of the Slippery Slope framework, power, and trust, in influencing formal tax compliance in the West Sumatera and Jambi region. The supervision factors: Notice of Tax Warning and Notice of Tax Collection are used as a proxy of power, and public education program is used as a proxy of trust in the authority. Secondary data collected through documentation study is presented in panel data and then analyzed using panel data regression analysis. As this study uses a mixed quantitative and qualitative method, we conducted in-depth interviews with key informants to get a more robust analysis. This study shows that together and partially, these three factors have a positive and significant effect on formal tax compliance. Notice of Tax Warning and Notice of Tax Collection effectively deliver law enforcement's message as a coercive power through supervision efforts. At the same time, tax education programs are practical to encourage awareness and trust in the authority that ultimately improves tax compliance. This study recommends some improvements in administrative issues and strategies to reach more taxpayers, perform more fair treatment, and enhance compliance.

Tax education, especially at college level, has so far focused on academic aspects and tends to ignore ethical aspects. So far, ethics education has shown its role in increasing individual moral sensitivity. Given the importance of ethics education, an integration of ethics is needed in tax education, so that it is expected to help in shaping tax-compliant behavior among students. Based on these issues, this study aims to examine the combined effect of tax ethics education and tax comprehension on tax compliance. This research was conducted on 81 undergraduate accounting students with an experimental method. Based on the analysis using ANOVA, this study found that the integration of ethics in tax education can improve tax compliance, especially for students who have low tax comprehension. The results of this study indicate the importance of ethics integration in tax education, especially at the university level. Therefore, the results of this study are expected to be a consideration for universities to integrate ethical aspects of tax education, thus helping in the process of forming student moral awareness as taxpayers in the future.
