The vast majority of U.S. teachers supplement their officially adopted curriculum materials with unofficial materials. Despite this, the body of supplementation-relevant literature tends not to focus on supplementation specifically, so lacks cohesion, and sometimes fails to capture all aspects the phenomenon. I systematically review supplementation-relevant literature from 2015 to 2020 and report seven areas of consensus in the literature around (1) who is involved in teacher-level curriculum supplementation, (2) important dimensions of supplementation, and (3) the educational value of supplementation. To provide future researchers a common starting point for studying teacher curriculum supplementation, I propose the Teacher Curriculum Supplementation Framework, a flexible yet testable analytical tool for systematizing scholarly inquiry around teacher curriculum supplementation and its effects on teachers and students.

Pedagogical message in texts of educational curriculum  materials: an analysis based on the organizational dimensionAbstractWe aim to identify and characterize the variations in the pedagogical message which occur in the organizational dimension referring to the pedagogical practice represented in texts of educational curriculum materials. The work is characterized by a qualitative approach whose data were produced through documents. The main reference theoretical-methodological used was Basil Bernstein’s theory. In particular, it was used the concept of classification in order to analyze the relations among discourses and spaces that are transmitted in texts of these materials. The results of the analysis demonstrated that beyond explicit reasons, the pedagogical message in texts of educational curriculum materials referring to the subject’s spaces showed a sharing in the organization and during the realization of the mathematical task a school pedagogical practice regulated by a strong relation of intradisciplinarity. For this, modes of action are undertaken that favor the sequencing of the mathematical task.Key words: Pedagogical message; Text; Educational curriculum materials. Pickard mandated that educational programs for emergent bilinguals be tested for program efficacy. As English language development (ELD) curricular materials are one part of an instructional program, we assess this mandate by examining the effectiveness of ELD materials in Texas, a large, diverse U.S. state with large numbers of emergent bilingual (EB) students. Using local linear matching, we find robust evidence that schools that do not purchase any ELD curricula have significantly lower English language proficiency scores relative to schools that purchase state-adopted ELD materials. In contrast, there is no significant difference between schools that adopt the two most popular ELD curricula in the state. This study suggests that curriculum materials matter for EBs’ English proficiency and implies that states should take a more active role in ensuring students have access to these materials.

Educative Curriculum Materials (ECMs) are teaching materials that have the dual function of providing learning activities to students and providing professional development to the teachers that use them. Answering a call for professional development opportunities, and with input from English teachers in rural Nicaraguan schools, the designers created a set of ECMs aligned with the Nicaraguan Ministry of Education Curriculum. When physically bringing the completed materials to educators in rural Nicaraguan schools became impossible, it was determined that the delivery system had to change. With support from a team of undergraduate computer science students, the ECMs were transferred to a digital delivery system, the new format allowing for even more English teaching and learning support. This paper shares how a revolution in Nicaragua and failed project ultimately led to the creation of the English teaching app Reaching for English.
