Diabetes Knowledge: What Do College Students Know

This study investigates students' knowledge about diabetes, with a focus on academic disciplines and gender. Data were collected from 218 students enrolled at a large public university. Descriptive statistics were employed, and factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) were performed. The results showed that, while participants seemed to have some knowledge about diabetes, they generally lacked specific content information about the disease. Female students outperformed male students in diabetes knowledge. Rehabilitation counselor educators can offer an invaluable service by covering the topic of diabetes in their courses and curricula. They can consider incorporating specific information about diabetes that can better prepare students as rehabilitation counseling professionals and informed citizens, while ensuring that male and female students have the same level of diabetes knowledge.

Therapeutic alliance in vocational rehabilitation counseling: assessing client factors and functioning

BACKGROUND: The therapeutic relationship is often acknowledged as one of the most significant factors in clinical process that influences client outcomes. OBJECTIVE: While considerable research has been conducted on the therapeutic relationship in psychotherapy, there is a paucity of research on the impact of the therapeutic relationship in vocational rehabilitation counseling settings. METHODS: This study explored the relationship between areas of client functioning (individual, interpersonal, social, and overall) and the therapeutic alliance among clients who receive services from the State vocational rehabilitation agency. RESULTS: In this study, younger clients (ages between 16 to 29) reported stronger therapeutic alliance. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study suggest that clients’ perceived individual, interpersonal and overall functioning have a significant positive relationship with the task and bond components of therapeutic relationship.

The Pedagogy of Rehabilitation Counseling: Perceptions of Rehabilitation Educators

The purpose of this study was to incorporate Bloom’s cognitive levels (Remembering/ Knowledge, Understanding/Comprehension, Applying/Application, Evaluating, and Creating/Synthesis) of understanding for rehabilitation counselor training programs. Forty rehabilitation counselor educators completed an online survey rating how important, how confident, and how frequently each participant incorporated the six learning domains of Bloom’s taxonomy within the classroom. The results indicate that rehabilitation counseling educators stated that they felt confident and that it is important to implement all the learning domains of Bloom’s taxonomy. Rehabilitation counseling educators indicated that application learning domain has the most impact on student learning. This study also provides implications and future directions to help discussion among rehabilitation counselor educators.

Earning Capacity of Private Rehabilitation Counselors

The following study builds upon prior research on rehabilitation counseling salary surveys completed by the American Counseling Association (ACA), the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC), the International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals (IARP), and the American Board of Vocational Experts (ABVE). The present study examines the current state of salary distribution within the private sector of rehabilitation counseling by combining the data sets from the IARP and ABVE participants into one large sample for regression analyses. The survey was created by building on the existing ACA and CRCC salary surveys in the counseling field and refined with the assistance of a Delphi panel of 10 nationally known rehabilitation counselors with an average of 31 years clinical experience. The survey participants included 524 members of IARP and ABVE who completed the identical online survey to provide the data to examine the average annual earnings, demographics, and participants who experienced disabilities during their career within the two national organizations. Results found that gender, education level, practice setting, licensure status, and years in practice were statistically significant.

Fifty-Five Books That Shaped Rehabilitation Counseling

This article attempts to construct a history of the first half-century of the field of rehabilitation counseling by identifying the seminal books that initiated or documented significant developments in the field. Those books fall into three categories: (a) books on theories and principles of human behavior, vocations, and counseling that underlie rehabilitation counseling practice (9 books); (b) books on disability (9 books); and (c) books on rehabilitation (37 books). By arraying books in each subcategory in chronological order, one can trace the evolution of the field. Unmet and future needs of the literature are suggested.

Effectiveness of vocational rehabilitation counseling based on Social Cognitive Career Theory on career goal engagement among individuals with visual impairment: a single subject study

Aim:The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effectiveness of career social cognitive counseling on career goal engagement of individuals with visual impairment. Method: Statistical population included all visual impairment individuals who were between 18-40 years old and lived in Isfahan city. The sample includes two people with visual impairment (one male and one female) that selected using purposeful non-random sampling. Data collected using career goal engagement scale. This research was a single-subject experimental design in form of an AB design. In this method, after the baseline condition, career counseling based on Social Cognitive Career Theory presented during 10 sessions. Data was analyzed based on descriptive statistics' and visual analysis indices. Findings: Visual analysis using the index of percentage of non-overlapping data (PND) indicated that intervention had an effective on career goal engagement of both participants. Conclusion: By considering the presence of different barriers in the lives of individuals with visual impairment and the importance of career goal engagement, the vocational rehabilitation counseling based on Social Cognitive Career Theory can be an effective intervention for encouraging individuals with visual impairment to commit to their career goals. This intervention can be applied in rehabilitation services centers for individuals with visual impairment.

Advancing Rehabilitation Counseling Professional Identity in Australia

PurposeThe past few decades have witnessed significant growth in the disability sector and the rehabilitation counseling profession has responded by broadening its scope of practice to serve a range of people who experience illness, injury, and social disadvantage. Despite the sector's growth and the profession's flexible response to it, the rehabilitation counseling profession in Australia continues to face challenges in relation to its professional identity. The purpose of this article is to identify these challenges and present solutions by reviewing literature and professionalization responses in Australia and the United States.MethodIn this article, we examine ways of transcending the professional identity challenges faced by the Australian rehabilitation counseling community. This is achieved firstly by defining the characteristics of professions and their application to rehabilitation counseling and second, by suggesting possible actions to advance the profession.ResultsThe necessary responses identified include the need for stronger professional governance, further development of the evidence base, and strict professional membership regulations. These goals will require the input of professional bodies and members, universities, rehabilitation regulators, employers, people with disabilities, and their families.ConclusionsRehabilitation counseling is a valued allied health and human service profession in the Australian work injury and disability sectors. By drawing on the experience of the profession in the United States, the authors have identified issues and solutions to facilitate the sustainability and advancement of rehabilitation counseling in Australia.
