Seven new xanthones, diaporthones A−G (1−7), together with 13 known analogues, including five mono- (8−14) and six dimeric xanthones (15−20), were obtained from the ascidian-derived fungus Diaporthe sp. SYSU-MS4722. Their planar structures were established by extensive spectroscopic analyses, including 1D and 2D NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HR-ESIMS). The absolute configurations of 1−7 were clearly identified by X-ray crystallographic analysis and calculation of the ECD Spectra. Compounds 15−20 showed significant anti-inflammatory activity with IC50 values between 6.3 and 8.0 μM. In addition, dimeric xanthones (15−20) showed selective cytotoxicity against T98G cell lines with IC50 values ranging from 19.5 to 78.0 μM.

Ancient stamps are suffering from the destructive effects of different kinds of inks that were prepared from different ingredients. Two Egyptian historical postage stamps printed in blue and red printing inks were evaluated and examined for their composition using a light microscope, SEM-EDS, FTIR, and Raman spectroscopic analyses. Mechanical, chemical, and deacidification treatments were done for the two stamps. Model stamps were made from the cotton pulp in the book house to simulate historical stamp paper with an average thickness of 11 microns. The unprinted and printed paper samples with printing inks that aged and unaged were treated with 0.7% Klucel G, 0.2% TiO2 NP, or a mixture of 0.7% Klucel G + 0.2% TiO2 NP, and the color change was measured and compared with the blank samples. The two stamps are suffering from high pH, where the margin color of the stamps changed to yellow-brown with weakness of the stamp paper. By SEM examination, stamps have suffered from fibers’ weakness and dryness resulting from the self-oxidation reactions. EDS elemental composition of the red stamp showed the presence of C, O, Na, Al, Si, Mg, S, Ca, Ba, and Fe, while in the blue stamp, it was C, O, Na, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, and Ca. Raman spectrometer wavelengths turn out that the blueprinting ink of the stamp was characterized with spectra of ultramarine blue (lazurite), while hematite was characterized by the red stamp. FTIR analysis for the printing inks identified that gum Arabic sample and linseed oil were the binding and color medium, respectively. From the model trials, it was observed that the treatment of a mixture of Klucel G and TiO2 NP had the best properties for the consolidation of stamps. The two historical stamps were documented through different spectroscopic analyses, and from the restoration trials, it was observed that the mixture of 7% Klucel G + 0.2% TiO2 NP appeared to be a new and effective method for recovering the historical postage stamps.

A novel hybrid PKS–NRPS alkaloid, xylarialoid A (1), containing a 13-membered macrocyclic moiety and [5,5,6] fused tricarbocyclic rings, together with ten known cytochalasins (2–11), was isolated from a plant-derived endophytic fungus, Xylaria arbuscula. The chemical structures of all compounds were elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR, HR ESIMS spectroscopic analyses, and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) calculation. Compounds 1–3 and 10 exhibited significant antitumor activities against A549 and Hep G2 cell lines, with IC50 values of 3.6–19.6 μM. In addition, compound 1 showed potent anti-inflammatory activity against LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in macrophage RAW 264.7 cells (IC50, 6.6 μM).

The natural product lupeol (1) was isolated from Bombax ceiba leaves, which were used as starting material in the semisynthetic approach. Three new derivatives (2a, 2b, and 3) were synthesized using oxidation and aldolization. Their chemical structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses (HRESIMS and NMR). Compounds 3 showed significant α-glucosidase inhibition with an IC50 value of 202 µM, whereas 2a and 2b were inactive.

Abstract We present combined photometric and spectroscopic analyses of the southern binary star PU Pup. High-resolution spectra of this system were taken at the University of Canterbury Mt. John Observatory in the years 2008 and again in 2014–2015. We find the light contribution of the secondary component to be only ∼2% of the total light of the system in optical wavelengths, resulting in a single-lined spectroscopic binary. Recent TESS data revealed grazing eclipses within the light minima, though the tidal distortion, examined also from Hipparcos data, remains the predominating light curve effect. Our model shows PU Pup to have the more massive primary relatively close to filling its Roche lobe. PU Pup is thus approaching the rare ‘fast phase’ of interactive (Case B) evolution. Our adopted absolute parameters are as follows: M 1 = 4.10 (±0.20) M ⊙, M 2 = 0.65 (±0.05) M ⊙, R 1 = 6.60 (±0.30) R ⊙, R 2 = 0.90 (±0.10) R ⊙; T 1 = 11500 (±500) K, T 2 = 5000 (±350) K; photometric distance = 186 (±20) pc, age = 170 (±20) Myr. The less-massive secondary component is found to be significantly oversized and overluminous compared to standard main sequence models. We discuss this discrepancy referring to heating from the reflection effect.

Abstract In the present study, experiments were performed to characterize the effectiveness of kaolinite in Cr(III) removal from water in the absence and in the presence of Cr(VI). The results of batch experiments, show that the efficiency of Cr(III) removal by kaolinite increases with the increase of pH and temperature in both cases. The effect of the presence of Cr(VI) on the adsorption of Cr(III) by kaolinite depends on the solution pH and on the concentrations of the two ions. Whatever the system, the removal kinetic of Cr(III) is well described by the pseudo-second order model. Spectroscopic analyses reveal that Cr(III) interaction with kaolinite is mainly electrostatic.

The cultivation of one actinobacteria strain, Herbidospora yilanensis, was isolated from sediment samples collected from Yilan County City in Taiwan, resulting in the isolation of five previously undescribed compounds: herbidosporayilanensins A–E (1–5), and four compounds isolated from nature for the first time: herbidosporayilanensins F–I (6–9). Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses, including 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments with those of known analogues, and on the basis of HR-EI-MS mass spectrometry, their antimycobacterial activities were also evaluated.

AbstractNumerous therapeutic compounds have been isolated from naturally abundant organic resources, which may offer economical and sustainable sources of compounds with safe and efficacious biological activities. In the cosmetics industry, natural compounds with anti-aging activities are eagerly sought. Thus, we prepared various extracts from Rubus fraxinifolius leaves and used enzyme inhibition assays to isolate compounds with protective effects against skin aging. Two triterpenoids were isolated from Rubus fraxinifolius Poir. leaves. The structures were characterized by spectroscopic analyses (LC-ESI-MS, 1D/2D NMR) and comparison to reported data. Compound 1 and 2 were determined as 2,3-O-ethyleneglycol, 19-hydroxyurs-12-en-23,28-dioic acid and 2,3-O-propanediol,19-hydroxyurs-12-en-28-oic acid. Methanol extract and isolates were assessed for their inhibitory effects on elastase and tyrosinase. Compounds 1 and 2 inhibited elastase with IC50 122.199 µg/mL and 98.22 µg/mL, and also inhibited tyrosinase with IC50 207.79 µg/mL and 221.51 µg/mL, respectively. The molecular docking proved that both compounds have affinities toward the enzymes.

AbstractIn this study, 5 sterols were isolated and purified from Laminaria japonica, commonly known as edible brown seaweed, and their structures were identified based on detailed chemical methods and spectroscopic analyses. Spectroscopic analyses characterized 5 sterols as 29-Hydroperoxy-stigmasta-5,24(28)-dien-3β-ol, saringosterol (24-vinyl-cholest-5-ene-3β,24-diol), 24-methylenecholesterol, fucosterol (stigmasta-5,24-diene-3β-ol), and 24-Hydroperoxy-24-vinyl-cholesterol. The bioactivities of these sterols were tested using lipid peroxidation (LPO) and cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and −2) enzyme inhibitory assays. Fucosterol exhibited the highest COX-1 and −2 enzyme inhibitory activities at 59 and 47%, respectively. Saringosterol, 24-methylenecholesterol and fucosterol showed higher LPO inhibitory activity at >50% than the other compounds. In addition, the results of molecular docking revealed that the 5 sterols were located in different pocket of COX-1 and −2 and fucosterol with tetracyclic skeletons and olefin methine achieved the highest binding energy (−7.85 and −9.02 kcal/mol) through hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bond. Our results confirm the presence of 5 sterols in L. japonica and its significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.Graphical abstractHighlightsSterols 29-hydroperoxy-stigmasta-5,24(28)-dien-3β-ol and 24-hydroperoxy-24-vinyl-cholesterol are identified for the first time in L. japonica.Saringosterol, 24-methylenecholesterol and fucosterol showed strong LPO inhibitory activity.Fucosterol showed highest binding affinity for COX-1 and −2 enzymes through hydrophobic interactions.
