A framework was presented for a fatigue failure model of fibrous composites using a multiscale approach, which uses the fatigue data of the fiber and matrix materials, respectively. Using this model, fatigue failure of fibrous composite materials and structures can be predicted from the constituent material behaviors. To that end, fiber bundles were tested under cyclic loading to determine their residual strength and stiffness. A successful completion of the model is expected to replace many fatigue tests as the configuration of the fibrous composite is varied.

AbstractFatigue is a common symptom in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and in patients with cancer (CA). The aim was to investigate the degree of fatigue in RA patients as compared to CA patients as well as potential influencing factors on RA-related fatigue. This was a retrospective analyses of two prospective cohort studies that used the EORTC QLQ-FA12 as a common instrument to assess fatigue. The cohort of RA patients was based on a nationwide survey in Germany. The cohort of CA patients was recruited in the context of an international validation field study. Multivariable ANCOVAs compared levels of fatigue between the two cohorts, also including various subgroup analyses. Regression analyses explored influencing factors on RA patients’ fatigue. Data of n = 705 RA patients and of n = 943 CA patients were available for analyses. RA patients reported significantly higher Physical Fatigue (mean difference = 7.0, 95% CI 4.2–9.7, p < 0.001) and Social Sequelae (mean difference = 7.5, 95% CI 4.7–10.2, p < 0.001). CA patients reported higher Cognitive Fatigue (mean difference = 3.5, 95% CI 1.4–5.6, p = 0.001). No differences in Emotional Fatigue (p = 0.678) and Interference with Daily Life (p = 0.098) were found. In RA patients, mental health and pain were associated with fatigue (p values < 0.001). RA patients showed a considerable level of fatigue that is comparable to and in certain cases even higher than that of CA patients. The implementation of standardized diagnostic procedures and interventions to reduce fatigue in RA patients are recommended.

Additive Manufacturing (AM) of metallic components shows unfavorable properties in their as-built state; surface roughness, anisotropy, residual stresses, and internal /surface defects are common issues that affect dynamic properties of AM metals. This paper reviews traditional fatigue testing techniques, summarizes published fatigue data for wrought and additively manufactured metals with focus on Inconel 718. Surface and volume defects of AM metals were presented and how post processing techniques could improve fatigue performance were shown. Different methods for normalizing fatigue data were explored due to varying results of different fatigue testing techniques.

Effects of processing parameters on preheated (heat-assisted) clinching process to join aluminum alloy 5052-H32 (AA5052) and thermoplastic carbon-fiber-reinforced-plastic (TP-CFRP) sheets for cross-tension (CT) specimens were first studied. Preheating was critical since brittle TP-CFRP could be softened to avoid fracturing or cracking during clinching process. Four processing parameters, including punching force, die depth, heating mode, and heating temperature, were considered. Quasi-static tests and microscope observations were taken to evaluate AA5052/TP-CFRP clinch joints in CT specimens and determine appropriate processing parameters for fatigue tests. Finally, fatigue data and failure mode of clinch joints in CT specimens were obtained and discussed.
