Spinal cord injuries (SCI) are disruptive neurological events that severly affect the body leading to the interruption of sensorimotor and autonomic pathways. Recent research highlighted SCI-related alterations extend beyond than the expected network, involving most of the central nervous system and goes far beyond primary sensorimotor cortices. The present perspective offers an alternative, useful way to interpret conflicting findings by focusing on the deafferented and deefferented body as the central object of interest. After an introduction to the main processes involved in reorganization according to SCI, we will focus separately on the body regions of the head, upper limbs, and lower limbs in complete, incomplete, and deafferent SCI participants. On one hand, the imprinting of the body’s spatial organization is entrenched in the brain such that its representation likely lasts for the entire lifetime of patients, independent of the severity of the SCI. However, neural activity is extremely adaptable, even over short time scales, and is modulated by changing conditions or different compensative strategies. Therefore, a better understanding of both aspects is an invaluable clinical resource for rehabilitation and the successful use of modern robotic technologies.

Chronic health conditions are becoming increasingly prevalent. As part of chronic care, sharing patient-generated health data (PGHD) is likely to play a prominent role. Sharing PGHD is increasingly recognized as potentially useful for not only monitoring health conditions but for informing and supporting collaboration with caregivers and healthcare providers. In this paper, we describe a new design for the fine-grained control over sharing one's PGHD to support collaborative self-care, one that centers on giving people with health conditions control over their own data. The system, Data Checkers (DC), uses a grid-based interface and a preview feature to provide users with the ability to control data access and dissemination. DC is of particular use in the case of severe chronic conditions, such as spinal cord injuries and disorders (SCI/D), that require not just intermittent involvement of healthcare providers but daily support and assistance from caregivers. In this paper, after providing relevant background information, we articulate our steps for developing this innovative system for sharing PGHD including (a) use of a co-design process; (b) identification of design requirements; and (c) creation of the DC System. We then present a qualitative evaluation of DC to show how DC satisfied these design requirements in a way that provided advantages for care. Our work extends existing research in the areas of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp), and Health Informatics about sharing data and PGHD.

The regeneration of nerve tissue after spinal cord injury is a complex and poorly understood process. Medication and surgery are not very effective treatments for patients with spinal cord injuries. Gene therapy is a popular approach for the treatment of such patients. The delivery of therapeutic genes is carried out in a variety of ways, such as direct injection of therapeutic vectors at the site of injury, retrograde delivery of vectors, and ex vivo therapy using various cells. Recombinant adenoviruses are often used as vectors for gene transfer. This review discusses the advantages, limitations and prospects of adenovectors in spinal cord injury therapy.

Abstract Introduction: Traumatic spinal cord injuries (TSCI) are worldwide public health problems. There has been a lack of extensive multi-center study of TSCI epidemiology in Northwest China in pre- and post-pandemic period of COVID-19. Materials and Methods: A multi-center retrospective study of 14 hospitals of Northwest China was conducted on patients with TSCI between 2017 and 2020. Variables assessed included patient demographics, etiology, segmental distribution, treatment, waiting time for treatment and outcomes.Results: The number of patients with TSCI showed an increasing trend from 2017 to 2019 while there were fewer patients in 2020 than in 2019. The male-to-female ratio was 3.67:1 and the mean age was 48±14.9. The major cause of TSCI was high fall (38.8%), low fall (27.7%), traffic accidents (23.9%), sports (2.6%) and others (7.0%). The segmental distribution showed a bimodal pattern, peak segments were C6 and Tl1, L1(14.7%) was the most frequently injured segments. Incomplete injury (72.8%) occurred more often than complete injury (27.2%). ASIA scale of most patients did not change before and after treatment both in operational or conservative group. 975 patients from urban and 1646 patients from rural areas were conducted, most urban residents could rush to get treatment after injured immediately (<1 h), whereas most rural patients get treatment spend several hours since injured. The rough annual incidence from 2017-2020 are 112.4, 143.4,152.2 and 132.6 per million people calculated by the population-coverage-rate.Conclusion: The incidence of TSCI in Northwest China is high and growing. However, under the pandemic policy reasons, it has decreased in 2020. The promotion of online work may be an effective primary prevention measures for trauma. Also, due to the distance from the hospitals with proper conditions, rural patients need to spend long time to there, the timely treatment of them should be paid attention.

AbstractElectrical stimulation is used to elicit muscle contraction and can be utilized for neurorehabilitation following spinal cord injury when paired with voluntary motor training. This technology is now an important therapeutic intervention that results in improvement in motor function in patients with spinal cord injuries. The purpose of this review is to summarize the various forms of electrical stimulation technology that exist and their applications. Furthermore, this paper addresses the potential future of the technology.
