Abstract Background Frequent weight loss attempts are related to maladaptive eating behaviours and higher body mass index (BMI). We studied associations of several type 2 diabetes (T2D) risk factors with weight loss history, defined as the frequency of prior weight loss attempts, among Finnish adults at increased risk for T2D. Methods This study (n = 2684, 80% women) is a secondary analysis of the 1-year StopDia lifestyle intervention with digital intervention group, digital intervention + face-to-face counselling group, or control group. The frequency of prior weight loss attempts was categorized into five groups: no attempts/no attempts to lose weight, but trying to keep weight stable/1–2 attempts/3 or more attempts/ continuous attempts. Data on emotional eating and social/emotional nutrition self-efficacy were collected with a digital questionnaire. We assessed baseline differences between categories of weight loss history as well as the intervention effects. Results Altogether 84% of participants had attempted weight loss. Those with one or more weight loss attempts had higher BMI, larger waist circumference, and more emotional eating compared to ‘no attempts’ and ‘no attempts to lose weight, but trying to keep weight stable’ categories. The ‘no attempts’ category had the highest baseline fasting insulin, whereas it showed the largest decrease in this measure with the intervention. This change in fasting insulin in the ‘no attempts’ category was significantly different from all the other categories. Emotional nutrition self-efficacy slightly improved in the ‘no attempts’ category, which was significantly different from its concomitant decrease in the categories ‘1-2 attempts’ and ‘3 or more attempts’. The intervention group assignment did not affect the results. Conclusions Multiple attempts to lose weight may unfavourably affect T2D risk factors as well as lifestyle intervention outcomes. More research is needed on how weight loss frequency could affect T2D risk factors and how to design lifestyle interventions for individuals with frequent previous weight loss attempts.

Night eating syndrome (NES) is currently classified as an Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorder (OSFED) under the Diagnostic Statistical Manual−5 (DSM-5). This systematic review aims to consolidate the studies that describe the sociodemographic, clinical and psychological features of NES in a population of patients with eating disorders (ED), obesity, or those undergoing bariatric surgery, and were published after the publication of the DSM-5. A further aim was to compare, where possible, NES with BED on the aforementioned variables. Lastly, we aimed to appraise the quality of the studies being included in the review. We conducted a systematic search on three databases (MEDLINE, PubMed and Embase) which resulted in the selection of 22 studies for the review. We included the articles that studied patients with NES and their sociodemographic, clinical and psychological features in a clinical (i.e., ED, obese or bariatric surgery) population, through a quantitative study design. Articles were excluded if the NES patients included in the study had a comorbid psychological disorder, and/or the sample was collected from a university/non-clinical population, and/or the study design was qualitative, and/or NES features were compared with any other disorder, except BED. Our study found that no conclusions about the link between any sociodemographic feature (such as, age, gender, income, etc.) and an NES diagnosis could be made. Further, NES patients presented with elevated ED pathology (including emotional eating and loss of control eating) and higher occurrence of depressive symptoms than controls. Contrary to the literature suggesting that NES and Binge Eating Disorder (BED; an ED subtype which is also comorbid with obesity) patients often report overlapping features, questioning the validity of NES as an ED diagnosis, we found that BED can be differentiated from NES by the higher occurrence of emotional eating, body related concerns and abnormal eating episodes. The review also suggested an overlap between NES and Sleep-Related Eating Disorder. We recommend that it is essential to study NES as an independent disorder to further develop its diagnostic criteria and treatment options, thereby, increasing the quality of life of the patients suffering from this syndrome.

The chapter is an attempt by authors to highlight the scope of mindful eating as an adjunct therapeutic tool. There is a close link between emotional states and eating, specifically intense emotional states and unhealthy eating practices. Mediating factors such as an individual's perception of food-related cues, changes in cognitive control, and eating as an emotional coping strategy influence the relationship between emotion and eating behavior. Mindful eating can be utilized as an adjunct in therapy by helping clients to practice cognitive control and by breaking the cycle of unhealthy coping strategies like emotional eating. Similar to other mindfulness techniques, mindful eating involves paying attention to the food intentionally, in the moment and without judgment. The chapter covers various approaches to mindfulness eating. Authors have compiled guidelines for therapists on how to introduce mindful eating as an adjunct in therapy settings for clients who have unhealthy eating patterns along with anxiety and depressive symptoms as well as for those suffering from eating disorders.

Although previous research has found the impact of fears of compassion on eating disorders, the mechanism underlying the relationship between fears of compassion and emotional eating remains to be examined. This study aimed to examine the mediating role of emotion regulation difficulties in the relationships between fears of compassion and emotional eating in college students, as well as the gender difference in the mediation model. The Fears of Compassion Scale, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale, and Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire were completed by 673 college students in Fujian Province, China. Structural Equation Modeling was primarily employed to analyze the data. The results showed that both fear of compassion for self and fear of compassion from others were positively associated with emotion regulation difficulties, which in turn were related to emotional eating for female college students. Emotion regulation difficulties played a significant mediating effect in the relationship between fears of compassion and emotional eating. Comparatively, for male college students, only fear of compassion for self was positively associated with emotion regulation difficulties, but emotion regulation difficulties were not related to emotion eating. Moreover, the mediating effect of emotion regulation difficulties was not significant in the relationship between fears of compassion and emotion eating for male college students. The findings suggest that it is important to improve individuals’ fears of compassion to reduce emotional eating, particularly for female college students.

ABSTRACT Introduction Rates of overweight and obesity have increased in the military, particularly in the U.S. Navy. While the Navy has implemented weight-management programs like ShipShape, findings on the effectiveness of these programs are mixed. Further knowledge on the characteristics of service members (SMs) who participate in these programs may help inform course curricula and improve outcomes. This study aimed to (1) examine characteristics of SMs referred to the Navy’s ShipShape program at a large military treatment facility, (2) compare these characteristics among SMs who did and did not enroll in a randomized clinical trial of ShipShape (ShipShape study participants), and (3) compare demographic and health characteristics of ShipShape study participants to that of a random and similarly sized sample of Navy SMs who responded to the 2015 DoD Health-Related Behaviors Survey (HRBS). Materials and Methods Data from active duty Navy SMs referred to the ShipShape program at a large military treatment facility were evaluated (n = 225). A subset of these SMs enrolled in the ShipShape study (n = 187). Among enrolled SMs, data from 147 who completed all measures were compared to that of HRBS respondents. Univariate ANOVA and chi-square analyses were used to examine (1) demographic and motivational differences between SMs who did and did not enroll in the ShipShape study and (2) differences in demographics and medical and mental health conditions between ShipShape study participants and Navy HRBS respondents. Results The majority of SMs referred to ShipShape were female with an average age of 28.3 years. Compared to SMs who did not enroll in the ShipShape study (n = 38), ShipShape study participants were more likely to be female, less likely to be Hispanic, and had higher motivation and emotional eating scores. Compared to Navy HRBS respondents (n = 164), ShipShape study participants (n = 147) were younger, more likely to be female, non-Hispanic, enlisted, and obese. Further, ShipShape study participants reported significantly fewer medical health conditions but higher rates of probable depression, anxiety, and PTSD and were more likely to report receiving current mental health treatment than HRBS respondents. Conclusion Overweight or obese SMs seeking weight loss in the ShipShape study were relatively young, female, non-Hispanic, motivated, but with greater emotional eating. ShipShape study participants endorsed few medical health conditions but had higher rates of probable mental health conditions compared to the HRBS sample. These findings suggest that SMs referred to Navy weight-management programs are likely experiencing comorbid mental health conditions which may interfere with the effectiveness of their weight loss efforts. The descriptive nature of this study and the focus on Navy SMs in only one ShipShape program may decrease the generalizability of our findings to participants at other locations. Nonetheless, these findings demonstrate the potential need for Navy weight-management programs that incorporate mental health treatment and address the specific needs of female and diverse SMs. A more comprehensive curriculum could improve the results of weight-management efforts, increase SM quality of life and fitness and thereby operational readiness.

Self-esteem, body image and eating attitudes are important characteristics regarding adolescent mental health. In our present work, we aimed to investigate these psychological items in adolescent boys and girls examining gender differences and correlations with the BMI-for-age and cardiorespiratory performance. 374 students (209 girls with an average age of 16.4 ± 1.08 years, and 165 boys with an average age of 16.5 ± 1.03 years) underwent investigation using the Rosenberg self-esteem scale, EAT-26 and BAT questionnaires. The BMI-for-age was calculated with BMI growth charts and the cardiorespiratory performance was measured with the 20 m shuttle run test. Our results showed that adolescent girls scored lower self-esteem and higher values for BAT and each scale of eating behaviors, such as uncontrolled eating, cognitive restraints and emotional eating compared to boys despite the fact, that obesity and overweight were more common among boys. No significant correlation was found between BMI and psychological test results in either boys or girls, however, subjective body shape and gender predicted self-esteem and BAT scores and the cognitive restraints in the eating attitudes. Uncontrolled and emotional eating were primarily influenced by gender, in which BMI played only a weaker role. Cardiorespiratory performance was positively associated with self-esteem and body image among boys, and it had a negative correlation regarding BMI in both genders.

Emotions have a powerful influence on eating behavior, and eating behavior can have a powerful effect on emotions. The objective of the present narrative review was to evaluate the relationship between negative affect and maladaptive eating behavior as a regulation strategy in normal-weight individuals. A search of the literature within PubMed®, MEDLINE® and PsycINFO was conducted using a combination of the following terms: “affect”, “negative affect”, “affect regulation” and “maladaptive eating behavior”. A total of 106 papers were identified for full text review and were included in the final set of literature. The manuscript presents an overview of the literature on negative affect and maladaptive eating behavior. It offers a brief overview of restrained, uncontrolled and emotional eating in normal-weight individuals and looks at maladaptive eating behavior used to regulate their affect. Based on the previous research findings, we argue that using more adaptive strategies for emotion regulation (cognitive reappraisal) might result in downregulating integral negative affect to food and in improving eating behavior.
