In the development of radiofrequency fingerprinting (RFF), one of the major challenges is to extract subtle and robust features from transmitted signals of wireless devices to be used in accurate identification of possible threats to the wireless network. To overcome this challenge, the use of the transient region of the transmitted signals could be one of the best options. For an efficient transient-based RFF, it is also necessary to accurately and precisely estimate the transient region of the signal. Here, the most important difficulty can be attributed to the detection of the transient starting point. Thus, several methods have been developed to detect transient start in the literature. Among them, the energy criterion method based on the instantaneous amplitude characteristics (EC-a) was shown to be superior in a recent study. The study reported the performance of the EC-a method for a set of Wi-Fi signals captured from a particular Wi-Fi device brand. However, since the transient pattern varies according to the type of wireless device, the device diversity needs to be increased to achieve more reliable results. Therefore, this study is aimed at assessing the efficiency of the EC-a method across a large set of Wi-Fi signals captured from various Wi-Fi devices for the first time. To this end, Wi-Fi signals are first captured from smartphones of five brands, for a wide range of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values defined as low (−3 to 5 dB), medium (5 to 15 dB), and high (15 to 30 dB). Then, the performance of the EC-a method and well-known methods was comparatively assessed, and the efficiency of the EC-a method was verified in terms of detection accuracy.

The modelling of time-varying shallow flows, such as tides and storm surges, is complicated by the nonlinear dependency of bed shear stress on flow speed. For tidal flows, Lorentz’s linearisation circumvents nonlinearity by specifying a (steady) friction coefficient r based on a tide-averaged criterion of energy equivalence. However, this approach is not suitable for phenomena with episodic and irregular forcings such as storm surges. Here, we studied the implications of applying Lorentz’s energy criterion in an instantaneous sense, so that an unsteady friction coefficient r(t) adjusts to the temporal development of natural wind-driven flows. This new bed-stress parametrisation was implemented in an idealised model of a single channel, forced by time-varying signals of wind stress (acting over the entire domain) and surface elevation (at the channel mouth). The solution method combines analytical solutions of the cross-sectionally averaged linearised shallow-water equations, obtained in the frequency domain, with an iterative procedure to determine r(t). Model results, compared with a reference finite-difference solution retaining the quadratic bed shear stress, show that this new approach accurately captures the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the surge dynamics (height and timing of surge peaks, sloshing, friction-induced tide-surge interaction) for both synthetic and realistic wind forcings.

Abstract. The article classifies, identifies and analyzes in detail the main disadvantages of existing models and methods for calculating the resource of building structure elements. A universal model and method for calculating the general and residual resources of reinforced concrete elements and structures that are under prolonged influence to operational loads are proposed. The generalized deformation-force model of the reinforced concrete elements and structures resistance to force effects is represented by an extended system of equations of the deformable solid mechanics. It is shown that the most important force and deformation parameters of the reinforced concrete elements state diagrams at all stages are functionally interconnected not only by rigidity, but by the potential energy of deformation. Therefore, due to the application of the hypothesis of invariability in a unit of volume and independence from the loading mode of the potential energy of their limiting deformation, this model has been developed to the energy level. The main advantages of the developed model of the reinforced concrete elements to force effects resistance in comparison with the existing force and deformation models in determining the resource of such elements are demonstrated. The methodology for calculating the general and residual life of reinforced concrete elements and structures is proposed to be built according to the deflections directly measured during field surveys or the step and width of the opening of normal cracks. In practice, they can be determined by geodetic, photogrammetric or any other means. The combination of the deformation-force model and the energy criterion makes it possible to calculate the general and residual resources of reinforced concrete elements and structures from a unified methodological standpoint. Therefore, the proposed "energy" hypothesis is recommended to be used as a universal energy criterion not only for the bearing strength exhaustion of the reinforced concrete elements, but also for limiting their deflections, as well as the width of the normal cracks opening under the action of any duration loads.

The load-bearing capacity of a CC(T) specimen (Center-Cracked Tension) in the ductile fracture regime is usually controlled by plastic collapse. If the material’s tearing resistance is sufficiently low, the load-bearing capacity can drop below the plastic collapse value. Here, a recently developed simple fracture mechanics-based Charpy-V impact energy criterion for plastic collapse was used to provide a best estimate assessment of the CC(T) specimen load-bearing capacity.

Deep high static loading roadway is extremely prone to rock burst under dynamic load disturbance. The “force-energy criterion” for the failure of surrounding rock in such deep roadways and the “energy criterion” for the rock burst was established by considering the stress and energy evolution characteristics of rock burst under this circumstance. Under the engineering background of the main roadway in No.1 mining area of Gaojiapu Coal Mine in Binchang Mining Area, Shaanxi Province, China, the partial stress field and distortion energy field of surrounding rock in the main roadway and the spatial-temporal evolution laws under dynamic load disturbance were simulated and analyzed by using a built-in dynamic module of FLAC3D. Results show that after the dynamic load disturbance, the partial stress and distortion energy are concentrated in the shallow part at two walls of the roadway in the early phase. With the continuous propagation of dynamic load stress wave, the partial stress and distortion energy are transferred to the deep part. The sudden high-energy release occurred in the peak zone of partial stress, leading to the plastic failure of coal and rock mass. Subsequently, the distortion energy was fully accumulated in the original plastic zone and transferred from shallow surrounding rocks to the deep surrounding rocks in the roadway, where the partial stress and distortion energy of coal and rock mass reached the yield conditions. Thus, the original plastic zone was sharply expanded, thereby forming a new plastic zone. The coal and rock mass experienced an approximately static failure when no residual energy (ΔU) was found in it. When ΔU > 0, the rock mass experienced dynamic failure, and ΔU was mainly the volume transformation energy, which is approximately one-half of the total elastic strain energy. ΔU was transformed into the initial kinetic energy of broken coal and rock mass. Thus, the coal and rock mass are burst out. In severe cases, this condition was manifested by the rock burst in the main roadway. An optimization scheme of prevention and control measures for rock burst was proposed on the basis of the above conclusions. The microseismic activity laws before and after the unloading were compared, and a good effect was achieved. The research results can lay a theoretical foundation for predicting and preventing rock bursts in coal mines by actively regulating the disaster-pregnant environment and mitigating the disaster-inducing conditions.

The roles of the rubber particle size, the rubber particle size distribution and the constitutive behaviour of the isotactic polypropylene matrix have been studied by combining the Lazerri–Bucknall energy criterion for cavitation with the Van der Sanden–Meier–Tervoort ligament model adapted for impact conditions. It is concluded that an optimised morphology offers great potential to achieve enhanced mechanical properties with far less rubber and hence achieve a superior stiffness/toughness/processing balance.

Double recalescence in many ferrous alloy systems involves rapid solidification of metastable ferrite from the undercooled melt with subsequent transformation to stable austenite. Containerless processing is used to monitor the process using pyrometry and high-speed cinematography such that delay behavior can be predicted based on the application of the retained damage model (RDM). When comparing Fe-Cr-Ni alloys to Fe-Co alloys, the cluster attachment rate is enhanced while free energy retention is reduced. These trends are tied to specific alloy properties. A retained free energy criterion is proposed based on the ratio of thermophysical properties used to define the transformation driving force such that the thermodynamic limit for energy retention may be predicted. Surprisingly, at long delay times, healing occurs such that much of the retained free energy is not available to enhance the transition from metastable to stable phases. At delay times less than one second, no healing is observed and the RDM correctly predicts transformation delay behavior over a wide range of alloy compositions.

Several ASTM standards on the fracture of glued and welded joints need attention because they do not consider the Griffith energy criterion of cracking which was proposed a century ago. It is almost as if Griffith never existed because the ASTM definition of failure is the stress criterion postulated by Galileo in 1638 in which stress at failure (i.e. strength = force/area) is defined as the determinant of fracture. Irene Martinez Villegas (Villegas, Rans 2021 Phil. Trans. R. Soc. A 376, 20200296. ( doi:10.1098/rsta.2020.0296 )) shows in this volume that attempts to use ASTM D5868 to standardize welded composite (carbon fibre reinforced polymer, CFRP) lap joints reveal major problems. First, the test is a low angle bend–peel test; not shear. Second, the energy required to break the joint is not emphasized so that joints may have high strength properties but also low toughness; third, the fracture force is not proportional to the lap joint area so the concept of strength independent of sample size is false; fourth, as the CFRP panels are made thicker, the strength rises at constant overlap area so the strength can be any value you want; fifth, the strength of larger joints goes down; this is the size effect noted in many bend-cracking tests, much as Galileo suggested for bent beam fracture in his famous book ‘the larger the machine, the greater its weakness'. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that poor ASTM ‘shear strength’ standards should be replaced by a definition of welded lap joint performance based on Griffith's energy conservation argument in which fracture surface energy is the main parameter resisting failure. The foundation of this Griffith-style lap joint analysis for long cracks goes back to 1975 but has been largely ignored until now because it does not fit the Griffith equation for cracked sheets, has no ‘stress intensity factor’, and travels at constant speed, not accelerating like the standard Griffith tension crack. This study of tensile delamination shows that a long lap crack is not driven by stress near the crack but by changes in stored elastic energy in the stretched strips remote from the crack tip, while strain energy release rate is negative. It would be more appropriate to call this lap failure a tensile delamination crack. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue ‘A cracking approach to inventing new tough materials: fracture stranger than friction’.
