Damage may be assessed using several damage indices with values associated with different structural damage states. The usefulness of a variety of current response-based damage indices in seismic damage assessment is addressed and critically assessed. A novel rational damage assessment method is provided, which measures the structure’s physical reaction characteristics. A practical method based on various analyses is given to evaluate the damaged structures in earthquakes of different intensities. This paper provides an overview of previous research works on the damage assessment of the reinforced concrete structures. This study may be helpful for easy understanding about the damage assessment of reinforced concrete structures and reduce the impacts of disaster and surrounding structures.

Tsunami-related fires may occur in the inundation area during a huge tsunami disaster, and woody debris produced by the tsunami can cause the fires to spread. To establish a practical method for evaluating tsunami-related fire predictions, we previously developed a method for evaluating the tsunami debris thickness distribution that uses tsunami computation results and static parameters for tsunami numerical analysis. We then used this evaluation method to successfully reproduce the tsunami debris accumulation trend. We then developed an empirical building fragility function that relates the production of debris not only to inundation depth but also to the topographic gradient and the proportion of robust buildings. Using these empirical evaluation models, along with conventional tsunami numerical analysis data, we carried out a practical tsunami debris prediction for Owase City, Mie Prefecture, a potential disaster area for a Nankai Trough mega-earthquake. This prediction analysis method can reveal hazards which go undetected by a conventional tsunami inundation analysis. These results indicate that it is insufficient to characterize the tsunami hazard by inundation area and inundation depth alone when predicting the hazard of a huge tsunami; moreover, more practically, it is necessary to predict the hazard based on the effect of tsunami debris.

Stochastic medium (SM) theory is a practical method in ground settlement prediction, while its nonintegrable double integral form makes the solution process complicated. A simplified analytical solution based on the SM theory is developed to predict the ground movement in tunneling excavation. With the simplified solution, the ground movement for single tunnel and twin tunnels could be predicted based on the gap parameter G and influence angle β. A feasible approach is developed to estimate these two parameters using the maximum ground settlement Smax and tunnel design parameters, including tunnel depth H and diameter R. The proposed approach can be used to predict the ground movement curve for both circular and noncircular cross section tunnels. To validate its accuracy, the results predicted by the simplified procedure are compared with those obtained by the SM theory and measured in situ. The comparisons show that the current results agree well with those obtained by the SM theory and measured in situ. The comparison of five tunnels in literature illustrates that the simplified method can provide a more reasonable prediction for the ground movement induced by tunneling.

The spinal cord is critical to integrating peripheral information under sensory-guided motor behaviors in health and disease. However, the cellular activity underlie spinal cord function in freely behaving animals is not clear. Here, we developed a new method for imaging the spinal cord at cellular and subcellular resolution over weeks under naturalistic conditions. The method involves an improved surgery to reduce spinal movement, and the installation of a miniaturized two-photon microscope to obtain high-resolution imaging in moving mice. In vivo calcium imaging demonstrated that dorsal horn neurons show a sensorimotor program-dependent synchronization and heterogeneity under distinct cutaneous stimuli in behaving mice. The long-term imaging of sensory neurons revealed that in the spinal cord, healthy mice demonstrated stereotyped responses. However, in a neuropathic pain model, plasticity changes and neuronal sensitization were observed. We provide a practical method to study the function of spinal cord on sensory perception and disorders in freely behaving mice.

Cohort analysis is a new practical method for e-commerce customers’ research, trends in their behavior, and experience during the COVID-19 crisis. The purpose of the research is to validate the efficiency of this method on the e-commerce records data set and find out the critical factors associated with customer awareness and loyalty levels. The cohort analysis features engineering, descriptive statistics, and exploratory data analysis are the main methods used to reach the study purpose. The research results showed that cohort analysis could answer various business questions and successfully solve real-world problems in e-commerce customer research. It could be extended to analyze user satisfaction with a platform’s technical performance and used for infrastructure monitoring. Obtained insights on e-commerce customers’ awareness and loyalty levels show the likeliness of a user to make a purchase or interact with the platform. Key e-business aspects from a customer point of view are analyzed and augment the user-experience understanding to strengthen customers’ relationships in e-commerce.

Objective: Despite being an important predictor of morbidity and mortality, routine screening for malnutrition in dialysis patients is not a common practice in Pakistan. Modified Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) is a convenient, inexpensive and practical method to assess nutritional status particularly in resource limited setup. Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted in The Kidney Center Post Graduate Training institute (TKC-PGTI). Patients on maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) were included through non-probability consecutive sampling. A one-time SGA score was calculated based on the history and physical examinations using modified SGA or Dialysis Malnutrition Score (DMS). Chi square test was applied to find association between variables, while to observe the amount of effect of factors on SGA score; binary logistic regression analysis was run. P value of ? 0.05 considered significant. Results: Mild-Moderately malnourished patients were the most frequent in our study 96(64%).None of patient had severe malnourishment. Females were 2.6 times more prone for malnourishment (p value=0.009). More than 5- years on hemodialysis also increased the risk of malnourishment by 12.5 times (p value <0.001). Overweight patients had 85 % less chance of being malnourished as compare to patients with normal weight (p value=0.004). Conclusion: Malnutrition is quite common in hemodialysis patients, which necessitates its regular assessment and monitoring. There is a need to assess the reasons of more malnourishment in female as compared to male. Similarly, the longer duration (> 5 years) on hemodialysis also need attention for prevention and cure of malnourishment.  Continuous...

Abstract ScxAl1-xN is a promising piezoelectric material for radio frequency communication applications with excellent electro-acoustic properties. However, the growth of abnormally oriented grains is widely observed in the Sc doped AlN films deposited by sputtering. In this work, for the first time, the impact of the abnormal grains in the Sc0.15Al0.85N films on the performance of bulk acoustic wave resonators and filters is systematically evaluated by both simulations and measurements. The correlation between the device performance and the abnormal grain parameters, including the density, dimension, crystal orientation, growth height, and the total volume of the abnormal grains, is evaluated and quantified. Simulation results show that the total volume of all abnormal grains in the whole device is the most critical factor among the parameters. Abnormal grains with randomly distributed parameters and around 6% total volume of the film can degrade the effective coupling coefficient of the resonator from 13.6% to 11%, leading to a 10.6% decrement of the filter bandwidth. Wafer-level device characterizations and measurements are performed, and the results are consistent with the simulations. This study provides a practical method for predicting the performance of the resonators and filters with abnormal grains, and a guideline for film quality evaluation.
