As mercury emissions continue and climate-mediated permafrost thaw increases the burden of this contaminant in northern waters, Inuit from a Northwest passage community in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago pressed for an assessment of their subsistence catches. Sea-run salmonids (n = 537) comprising Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), lake trout (S. namaycush), lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis), and cisco (C. autumnalis, C. sardinella) were analyzed for muscle mercury. Methylmercury is a neurotoxin and bioaccumulated with fish age, but other factors including selenium and other elements, diet and trophic level as assessed by stable isotopes of nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C), as well as growth rate, condition, and geographic origin, also contributed depending on the species, even though all the fish shared a similar anadromous or sea-run life history. Although mean mercury concentrations for most of the species were ~0.09 µg·g−1 wet weight (ww), below the levels described in several jurisdictions for subsistence fisheries (0.2 µg·g−1 ww), 70% of lake trout were above this guideline (0.35 µg·g−1 ww), and 19% exceeded the 2.5-fold higher levels for commercial sale. We thus urge the development of consumption advisories for lake trout for the protection of pregnant women and young children and that additionally, periodic community-based monitoring be initiated.

AbstractMercury is a potent neurotoxin that poses health risks to the global population. Anthropogenic mercury emissions to the atmosphere are projected to decrease in the future due to enhanced policy efforts such as the Minamata Convention, a legally-binding international treaty entered into force in 2017. Here, we report the development of a comprehensive climate-atmosphere-land-ocean-ecosystem and exposure-risk model framework for mercury and its application to project the health effects of future atmospheric emissions. Our results show that the accumulated health effects associated with mercury exposure during 2010–2050 are $19 (95% confidence interval: 4.7–54) trillion (2020 USD) realized to 2050 (3% discount rate) for the current policy scenario. Our results suggest a substantial increase in global human health cost if emission reduction actions are delayed. This comprehensive modeling approach provides a much-needed tool to help parties to evaluate the effectiveness of Hg emission controls as required by the Minamata Convention.

The numerical analysis of mercury pollution in the vicinity of the “Usoliekhimprom" industrial site and a territory of Usolye-Sibirskoye was held. The main centers of atmospheric influx of mercury vapor, which are located in the area of the sludge storage and the former mercury electrolysis workshop, were determined by the results of the soil survey. Asymptotic descriptions of the processes of transfer of light impurities from ground-based sources, taking into account the relative position of foci and observation points, were proposed. A reconstruction model of concentration fields over a long period of time for the dominant sources of plant was developed. The model was tested on biomonitoring data for 2019. Quite satisfactory agreement between the data of experimental studies of the content of mercury in poplar leaves with the results of numerical modeling was obtained. The ratios of contributions to pollution from different objects of the enterprise were calculated. Recommendations on the use of the reconstruction model to control rehabilitation measures at the Usoliekhimprom industrial site, which are currently being carried out, have been proposed.
