the article addresses the subject of usage of immersive technologies for the education of Bachelors of Arts in Oriental languages. Various aspects of application of virtual and augmented realities for Oriental language studies by students are considered. Authors suggest main classifications of types of augmented and virtual reality tools for understanding the principles and features of their use in the educational process, in particular for learning of Japanese language. Article contains analysis of research materials by scientists and their main results concerning the selection and application of immersive technologies for teaching students of philological faculties of higher education institutions in Oriental languages. The advantages of usage of immersive technologies for training future Bachelors of Arts in Oriental languages, in particular focusing on Japanese language, are determined and substantiated.

The article analyzes the thirty-eighth word of the edification of the Kazakh poet Abai Kunanbayev and gives a semantic interpretation. In the course of the analysis, the concept of a full-fledged Muslim and a full-fledged person is differentiated, expressed in the word edification, and on the basis of this, the ways of cognizing the Creator are considered. This chapter, based on the method of interpreting multiple meanings in a few words, says that the search for truth through the knowledge of the Creator is a characteristic feature of human nature. It also explains the meaning of words and phrases used in the introduction of such ideas. This shows the poet's knowledge of the oriental language and demonstrates his vocabulary. For this reason, the semantic nature of examples of religious terms in the Kazakh language is revealed in the word edification. As a result, the poet's concept of "a full-fledged Muslim and a full-fledged person" proceeded from the role of religious scholars in revealing the place of religion in Islam and their significance in blasphemy. Based on the content, use and semantic essence of the key words of oriental languages, that is, the concept of the original is maximally presented in the Kazakh language. This means that Abay Kunanbayev, who mastered the teachings of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and was able to show in his speech that his religious teachings were rich and he was good at explaining Sharia. Because his works contain valuable and important information that is still needed today.

Urdu, Punjabi and Pothwari are the three most widely spoken languages in Pakistan and India. Historical invasions and colonization resulted in the dispersal of the local population, causing numerous dialects of each language. There are different theories and myths about the historical connection of these languages. One such theory says that Pothwari is a variant of the Punjabi language. This might be due to the perception that Pothwari has so far been unable to claim the status of an independent language and thus, has a subordinated, relegated or inferior social status. The main reason behind this might be the folk linguistic perceptions that connect this great Oriental language with the uneducated and the unrefined. Though Urdu, Punjabi and Pothwari have sprung from the same ancestral source, they have developed uniquely over centuries. This article explores how the shared features between these three languages have diverged over time, causing great linguistic diversification

The article restores the biography of N. V. Orloff (1844–1915), a psalmist of the Church in the name of the Assumption of the Mother of God at the Russian Embassy in London, which, in addition to his official duties and translation activities, was involved in the process of establishing Russian studies in Great Britain in the late XIXth – early XXth centuries. For a quarter of a century, Orloff taught the Russian language at King’s College London, as part of the training of Oriental language specialists, who took part in the exams for official posts in the Indian Civil Service, as well as in the British army. Orloff’s resignation in 1915 symbolically coincided with the beginning of a new stage in the development of Russian studies, with the creation of the School of Slavonic Studies at King’s College London.

I. Vernadsky for the first half of the 3rd year, training direction 45.03.01 "Philology" (Persian language and literature). Designed for students at the 3rd course language universities, where the Persian language is studied as a major Eastern language, and methodologically associated with the training materials for the 2nd course as a logical continuation.

The paper contains a synthetic discussion of original and little known philological manuscripts which had been created since the 16th century by Tatars – Muslims of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania – as characteristic Slavic aljamiado. The preserved manuscripts in which Slavic languages – Polish and Belarusian – were recorded in the Arabic alphabet are enormously important for the history of both languages and the Slavic-Oriental language relations. Various types of these historical texts (kitabs, chamails, tajweeds, etc.) contain the first, that is the oldest (16th century), translation of the Quran into a Slavic language (Polish) recorded in the Arabic alphabet (so-called tafsir). These sources are studied within the framework of an original philological sub-discipline of Kitab Studies whose origin and development should be credited to Professor Anton Antonovich from Vilnius University. The author of the paper discusses the research methodology pertaining to these sources, particularly the transliteration of Slavic texts recorded in the Arabic alphabet into the Latin alphabet, and introduces prospective major research tasks for Kitab Studies.

Purpose – The purpose of the study is to determine the most preferred catalogue format – card catalogue or online public access catalogue (OPAC) for searching library material in Oriental languages, i.e. Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Punjabi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Sindhi and Pashto of the Central Library, University of the Punjab, Lahore. It also explores the users’ searching behaviour for finding the library material in Oriental languages. Design/methodology/approach – A purposive sample of 100 respondents was chosen for this study. The questionnaire contained both close- and open-ended questions. SPSS (version 11.5) was used for quantitative analysis of data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for reaching conclusions. The qualitative data analysis software “X-Sight” was used for analysing the qualitative data. Findings – The study highlights the importance of both types of catalogue. Many of the findings of the study related to the card catalogue and OPAC are surprising when compared to their general perceptions. It is important to note that the users perceived the card catalogue as more effective for searching the library material in Oriental languages. However, they also face many problems while using both types of catalogues. Originality/value – It is the first study of its type in Pakistan that explored the users’ perceptions and behaviour of searching Oriental language material from the card catalogue and OPAC. The findings of the study are valuable for library management, not only at the Central Library of Punjab University but also for other libraries. These findings can help in making both card catalogue and OPAC more effective and user-centred. It will also assist them to improve weaknesses of both types of catalogues. Implications of the study – This study compares the users’ preferences for card catalogue and/or OPAC when searching Oriental language material. There are very few studies available on this subject and most of them are dated.
