Bedding-parallel fibrous calcite veins crop out at two Permian carbonate localities in the Phetchabun area, central Thailand, within the Nam Duk and Khao Khwang Formations. Samples are studied to determine their petrographic, geochemical and isotopic character, depositional and diagenetic associations and controls on the formation of fibrous calcite across the region. Biomarker and non-biomarker parameters are used to interpret organic matter sources in the vein-hosting units, the depositional environment and levels of source rock maturation in order to evaluate source rock potential in the two Formations. Carbon and oxygen isotope values of the veins and the host are determined to discuss the source of carbonates and diagenetic conditions. The petroleum assessment from the Khao Khwang and Nam Duk Formations suggests that both Formations are a petroleum potential source rock with type II/III kerogen deposited in an estuarine environment or a shallow marine environment and a slope-to-basin marine environment or an open marine environment, respectively. The bedding-parallel fibrous calcite veins from the Khao Khwang and Nam Duk Formations are divided into two types: 1) beef and, 2) cone-in-cone veins. The carbon and oxygen isotope compositions from the fibrous calcite veins suggest that the calcite veins could be precipitated from a carbon source generated in the microbial methanogenic zone. The results in this study provide a better understanding of the interrelationship between the bedding-parallel fibrous calcite veins and petroleum source rock potential.

Abstract The results of researches of the stable isotopes, carbon 13C and oxygen 18O, measured in Triassic limestones of Opole Silesia in Poland were presented in this article. The study was carried out to obtain data for interpretation of the environment of these rocks formation. Moreover, it was possible to form the theory about diagenetic processes which influenced on the mineral composition of limestone and some of their carbonte phases. The results of study show a general differentiation of δ13C and δ18O contents in carbonate minerals. All δ18O values are less than 0 ‰. It indicates that the origin oxygen isotope composition could be probably reset by diagenesis. The crystallization temperatures of low-Mg calcite and high-Mg, calculated on the basis of δ18O values are greater than 25 oC. They are higher than typical for sea basin and are also not be related to the presence of hydrothermal solutions. The increased temperatures of calcites crystallization are related to diagenetic processes that took place after the deposition and burial of carbonate material. The preservation of high-Mg calcite, an ustable carbonate phase, which is usually trasformed into low-Mg calcite during diagenesis, is probably connected with the increased salinity of the sea basin in which studied limestones were formed.

AbstractOxygen isotope compositions of fossil foraminifera tests are commonly used proxies for ocean paleotemperatures, with reconstructions spanning the last 112 million years. However, the isotopic composition of these calcitic tests can be substantially altered during diagenesis without discernible textural changes. Here, we investigate fluid-mediated isotopic exchange in pristine tests of three modern benthic foraminifera species (Ammonia sp., Haynesina germanica, and Amphistegina lessonii) following immersion into an 18O-enriched artificial seawater at 90 °C for hours to days. Reacted tests remain texturally pristine but their bulk oxygen isotope compositions reveal rapid and species-dependent isotopic exchange with the water. NanoSIMS imaging reveals the 3-dimensional intra-test distributions of 18O-enrichment that correlates with test ultra-structure and associated organic matter. Image analysis is used to quantify species level differences in test ultrastructure, which explains the observed species-dependent rates of isotopic exchange. Consequently, even tests considered texturally pristine for paleo-climatic reconstruction purposes may have experienced substantial isotopic exchange; critical paleo-temperature record re-examination is warranted.
