Restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic forced many teachers across the United States to teach their students remotely using online teaching strategies. Analyzing teachers' perceptions and expectations of online teaching before and during the pandemic help stakeholders understand how to better handle the challenges of online learning. The literature review examines the traditional differences between teaching online and in-person courses, challenges faced when teaching online courses, and teacher perceptions of online learning. The survey method was used to collect data on the experiences of online teaching before and during the pandemic from ninth through twelfth grade teachers in a North Texas school district. The study results show that factors such as a teacher age or years of experience had less influence determining if they were prepared for online teaching. Rather, factors like a teacher school campus, prior experience, and access to support structures correlated more to teachers having a high level of preparedness for online teaching.

The goal of the current study was to examine whether contextual characteristics of a school are related to student interventions in bullying. Specifically, participants reported their perceptions of how teachers responded to bullying, school climate, and the promotion of social emotional wellness. The study included 390 eighth to twelfth grade students from the Southeastern region of the United States. The confirmatory factor analysis revealed good model fit and measurement invariance across sex was established. Structural models indicated that for boys, perceptions of social emotional learning (SEL) promotion were positively and significantly related to their intervention in bullying. For girls, both teacher interventions and perceptions of SEL promotion were positively related to their intervention in bullying. Results suggest that characteristics of the school are important for promoting interventions in bullying among high school students.

Abstract Introduction Machine learning presents a unique opportunity to improve electronic cigarette (vaping) monitoring in youth. Here we built a random forest model to predict frequent vaping status among Californian youth and to identify contributing factors and vulnerable populations. Methods In this prospective cohort study, 1,281 ever-vaping twelfth-grade students from metropolitan Los Angeles were surveyed in Fall and in 6-month in Spring. Frequent vaping was measured at the 6-month follow-up as nicotine-containing vaping on 20 or more days in past 30 days. Predictors (n=131) encompassed sociodemographic characteristics, substance use and perceptions, health status, and characteristics of the household, school and neighborhood. A random forest was developed to identify the top ten predictors of frequent vaping and interactions by sociodemographic variables. Results Forty participants (3.1%) reported frequent vaping at the follow-up. The random forest outperformed a logistic regression model in prediction (C-Index=0.87 vs. 0.77). Higher past-month nicotine concentration in vape, more daily vaping sessions, and greater nicotine dependence were the top three of the ten most important predictors of frequent vaping. Interactions were found between age and perceived discrimination, and between age and race/ethnicity, as those who were younger than their classmates and either reported experiencing discrimination frequently or identified as Asian or Native American/Pacific Islander were at increased risk of becoming frequent vapers. Conclusions Machine learning can produce models that accurately predict progression of vaping behaviours among youth. The potential association between frequent vaping and perceived discrimination warrants more in-depth analyses to confirm if discrimination constitutes a cause of increased vaping.

This paper examines how state prekindergarten (PreK) leaders in the United States believe their gender, race, and the status of the field influenced their work experiences. Qualitative methods were used to collect data from 10 state PreK leaders through two semistructured interviews. Leaders worked in different states and the majority identified as female (80%) and White/non-Hispanic (60%). Analysis of the data revealed the status of PreK and the ECE field as “less than” in comparison with the kindergarten through twelfth grade (K–12) education system affected the work of all participating PreK leaders. White female leaders experienced a double bind due to their gender and the status of the field, leading them to conform to gender and social role stereotypes to avoid backlash. BIPOC PreK leaders experienced various instances of gendered racism and for one female BIPOC leader this resulted in a triple bind, as the intersections of the field’s status and her race and gender presented additional challenges. While leaders tried to navigate these different binds successfully, there were unintentional consequences: Male leaders enjoyed privilege that further marginalized female PreK leaders; White female leaders’ decisions to conform with stereotypes reinforced the status of ECE; and a BIPOC female leader replicated challenges for BIPOC individuals in an effort to protect herself. For the ECE field to advance its equity goals and increase its professional standing, state ECE leaders need specific training to address their implicit biases, strengthen their own professional ECE identities, and advocate a unified ECE profession across auspices.
